The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

I really enjoyed the early Critic videos where he would review nostalgic stuff or take a look at cartoons like TMNT and Duck Tales.
Some reviews he did of more modern movies like The Room were hilarious (because it was The Room), but it wasnt nostalgic, in that sense.
As for AVGN, I'm a big fan but I can see some of his video game reviews are better than others. I've noticed the newer episodes seem like bigger productions (the recent Seaman episode was great though). I can appreciate it takes a long time to make them, and he'd just finished the movie, and he's got his personal life too.
Lately I've been watching his Board James videos, and cant wait to see what he does with that character. Its interesting because what started out as a polar opposite to the AVGN character has turned into this creepy horror story.

This was one of those shows I've heard about but never really looked into. I see I missed something "amazing".

It also looks like
another AVGN crossover in the works

Maybe you missed living through that time period? It was like the wild west.

Back then, the Saturday Morning Cartoons were in a secondary boom. Basically any concept you could slightly grasp had a cartoon thrown out despite popularity or not. Even the failed cartoons would be picked up by other networks (USA Cartoon Express, etc). Almost like second run theaters.

I was born 1990 so I was only a year old when this came on.
I mostly remember Batman and X-Men.
I do know everyone tried to cash in on TMNT with stuff like Sewer Sharks and Biker Mice from Mars. The former was shameless.

Street Sharks. Sewer Shark was a Sega CD game, heh.

Biker Mice is better than the old crap Turtles with the exception of the first few TMNT episodes which are top tier and done by a different animation studio.

I'd argue it's even better than the first eps. It's one of those shows that went beyond simply cashing-in on the mutant radical edge hype.

Man, Doug is going to get so much hate for this one. It was a great look back and analysis, but the dig at the men's rights loser will piss off a lot of his fanbase.

That's alot of set pieces for a Critic review. I'm really liking those review sets There was that much controversy?! Glad I didnt witness any of it before seeing it in theaters.

Knew he liked it since he's always saying: show, don't tell.

There's a lack of Bane jokes.

I dunno, everyone needs to be dug sometimes. Also he took potshots at everyone.

I never saw the older Mad Max movies and I thought the new one was meh. I was getting a little bored toward the end. Then again I usually dislike most action flicks.

He got one in. Though it's more a dig at Fury Road's ADR than a dig at Bane.

I knew about the MRA's hating the movie, but I didn't know crazy Tom Hardy fangirls were a thing.

If that's true then good riddance. Weed them out I say. NC is better off without them if he had any substantial number within his ranks to begin with. Off with them MRAs and insecure manchildren.

Not quite a "clipless review" like his Jurassic World or Pixels reviews (which I hated) and yet one of his better recent works I've seen from him. A little overproduced but an interesting analysis and original way of talking about them with at least still pictures of the movies.

I approve of this one.

I wonder if there is some bitterness about Lindsy leaving with the Tom Hardy fan girl digs.
What about Lindsay leaving with what Hardy fan girls? Last thing I knew was she still releases videos for Channel Awesome as recently as this week.

Was that a joke or am I missing something?

Yeah, I know. Kind of sad really. That's why I distance myself from the NC fanbase now. I used to be more active in the fanbase until all the whining and idiocy from the fans.

Jesus Christ these skits are garbage.

I understand that Doug enjoys doing them but I'm seriously unable to understand how he thinks they are funny. They're the exact same sort of shit we were subjected to with Epic Movie and Disaster Movie; does he think those are great comedy? Does he think just reenacting a scene from a movie without a budget and with everyone making goofy voices is hilarious?

It's even more noticeable here because the entire video is basically Doug talking to the audience; having these stupid skits distracts from whatever he's trying to say.

He is more or less being forced to do it because of Youtube claims.

He really isn't. He could just spare us the skits and talk about the damn movie. I shouldn't have to wait five minutes before he even (kinda) gets there.

But even the commentary about the movie was ridiculous. "I thought the movie was just okay, really. Please suffer through the skits until I finally explain myself... Wait, now that I think about it, I think you're right after all: it's brilliant. The End. I mean, some more skits. The End."
And then, I guess he'll make a "real thoughts about" video. This is so fucking dumb.

This is why I much prefer the old format still. Just cracking jokes at the footage, while sitting in the computer chair. With some light skits. Though with that said I don't hate the new style that much but i'll easily drop it for older episodes. His best newer episodes to me are ones that emulate his classic style more like face/off

Mind you, I do believe in the idea that men and women both equally have rights, but you get idiots from both sides.

But the skits work with the review unlike his usual, which makes this one likeable.

Just watched the Mad Max review. Wasn't bad I kind of agree with the fan bit though. Some of them are crazy about it, and was nice that he touched up on that.

The movie (and the book) are fairly interesting. Saw it (and read it) years ago for school. It was a specialty class that was all about media and how you consume it.

Nostalgia Critic: Did You Miss the Most Shocking Film in Years?

Spoilers, the film he talks about is
Thank You for Smoking
. I THINK I remember hearing about it or seeing it on the shelf of Family Video, but never knew what it was actually about.

Assuming it is the same Thank You For Smoking that I saw in theaters when it was released a few years ago with a fairly packed and diverse audience, I don't know anyone who would say it was shocking or controversial. I'll watch this later to hear why this is "shocking".

So I finally watched the Thank You for Smoking video, and I don't get it unless you don't watch adult movies. It's an adult comedy intended for adults who, at least in the audience I saw it with, all got its message and found nothing controversial or shocking. Yes, choice matters, and that's the movie.

I think if he wanted to do something shocking and was a comedy, he should have chosen Charlie Wilson's War which basically shows the creation of the Taliban by the USA, their heroic war against the Russians, and does so with basically little grandstanding.

Basically, I don't know how someone paying attention to watching a film cannot "get" what Thank You for Smoking was about. Maybe it is a video made for people who only watch comic book movies or something. Bit, it's an adult comedy, so why Thank You for Smoking is controversial is beyond me.

Isn't that sorta Doug's thing when it comes to analysis? Stating fairly obvious stuff in a tone that makes it seem like a shocking reveal?
