The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Pretty much my feelings towards both franchises, too, though if there's one thing both franchises dint get enough credit for (particularly the newer films), it's for their visuals. They're not scared of being bright and colorful and come off as more comic book-ish, as opposed to the Marvel Universe which are more your standard Hollywood blockbuster fare, and is one of the things I hope Marvel carry over from the franchise when they inevitably get the film rights.

I'm getting really tired about the 2 supporting actors. Never liked them really, I think Critic works best alone with small cameos from Rob/whoever. The writing with them feel really forced (well, more than usual anyway).

I think they're fine, but the writing for them is pretty grating at times. The Walkers just have a tendency to go back to the same well over and over again until it makes you want to slam your head into a wall.

Also Rob Walker has the screen presence of a wet rag (which I'm pretty sure he knows given how limited his cameos tend to be).

Small note: I went to Momocon this past weekend, and I saw Doug near the end of a panel that i was at and he even signed an autograph for me. He's really nice, if only slightly reserved. Glad I got to meet him.

Speaking of skits.

What are peoples opinions on having an overarching storyline wrapping around the review?

Lately I'd been watching a lot of Blockbuster Buster because I like reviews, but the background sketches with the weird Steampunk guy and his wife who you never see her face are just soooo cringeworthy. I don't understand what's going on and it makes me feel like I'm supposed to be watching every single review from the beginning just to know the story. They try to shoehorn in that these reviewers are being "forced" to review bad movies by some evil entity who gets off on this stuff. Can't people review bad movies because they're bad? So glad the Critic doesn't do that... for the most part.

I mean it's one thing with RedLetterMedia. They do the same thing, and I'm sure it'd be considered cringeworthy to some people, but at least they use professional equipment. With RLM I wouldn't dare get rid of the backstory.

But with someone like BBB, I'd much rather not have it at all. It never makes sense. It's like they try to create a mythos of their own. Then they bring in cameos from reviewers no one has ever heard of that may or may not even be on the site.

I also wish everyone would just upgrade to better equipment already. Nice HD cameras with better lighting. Quite a few of the TGWTG people have already but some are still stuck with low quality recordings and bad lighting.

Doug doesn't like Godzilla but Rob does. Neat.

With that said the Bum review was cringe.

I thought he said he warmed up to it after a few days and Rob told him that it's "a real Godzilla movie". That's what I went by watching the Sibling Rivalry

What separates RLM's skits is that they're focused on comedy. They're more like a sitcom. What the Blockbuster Buster (poorly) does is attempted drama and action, and it's really cringeworthy and annoying, the same criticism can be applied to Linkara (though he seems to be getting better).
Of course, their story stuff is still leagues better than the Irate Gamer's attempt (now THAT is SHIT)

As for better equipment, it's costly. Though Patreon is starting to help them out (especially Lupa, who has now removed midroll ads)

RLM skits are a step above the rest. The skit during the "Best of the Worst" Christmas where Rich is raging and tearing down the tree and Mike goes "Rich! Rich! We have to watch it" still has me rolling.

Nostalgia Critic skits are hit and miss for me. Sometimes they aren't funny. I did like the few in the recent reviews, but for example, that story with the devil and his daughter from around the time NC came back, was awful.

Bum review is always shit. I've never gotten more than 10 seconds into one.

The old Bums were good because they were short and not nitpicky. This one feels like he's channeling his NC character to Bum.

Blip has begun to serve channel shutdown notices to channels with low traffic. Several ThatGuyWithTheGlasses channels including Welshy and JesuOtaku are going to die/already dead

Lordy, compared to the shit I've seen, Linkara and B3 are geniuses. Hell, maybe IG is too. *Cringes when he remembers Don East's Anime Abomination.*

But I do agree in a lot of respects as well. That being said though, I don't think that the skits/story should go away entirely, but be reminded to not take themselves too seriously. I mean, they're just bridging segments during comic book/kids movie reviews.

Get bought by Disney.

Actually, they've been doing channel purges before they got bought out by Disney.
It's stupid that they do it though... I can understand purging inactive channels, but a lot of the ones they get rid of post videos regularly, and only get destroyed because they don't get a lot of views.

I know this has prompted people to start archiving JewWario's videos on Blip (his account is safe for now, but you never know).

One of the purged TGWTG members, Leon Thomas, has started using Screenwave Media player, the one used by Cinemassacre and Spoony.

What ever happened to demo reel? I saw this thread title and didn't realize that this is just a NC discussion thread.

Demo Reel might have been some of the most cringeworthy videos I ever watched. I remember him going off on that whole thing about how he was buying a studio and that Nostalgia Critic is gone and he could do nothing with it. Hilarious that he went back on his words. I guess Demo Reel was just that bad.

That's exactly why they stopped. It was horrible and cumbersome to even watch. They didn't know where they were going with it and decided to give up on it. Which is why he now has the new people in his NC videos and better production values. They just kept the good stuff from it and got rid of the bad. Back to Critic videos which is what we need. What we deserve.

His "Show Must Go On" video explains the whole thing. Kind of.

Also, it's not just a NC discussion thread. We talk about anything from TGWTG website. Feel free to discuss the Chick or anyone else on their site.

Nobody watched it because it was terrible, so Doug went back to doing NC. That said, ever since his return he's been able to put a lot more time and effort into his main NC videos by making them bi-weekly. I like that he's been able to evolve his videos beyond the generic "guy talking into a camera about movies", which are a dime-a-dozen these days.

Yeah. Especially with RedLetterMedia doing what they do. (In a behind the scenes of the first episode Jay talks about how all internet reviewers these days -- meaning back a few years ago -- were either overblown green screen yelling all the time or extremely amateur low lighting filming in a bedroom with a webcam.) It's good to see reviewers that have their own schtick.

As they said, Demo Reel was bad and people didn't watch it after the disastrous first episode.

Even then, things were looking bad behind the scenes. When the day came for the second episode to air, we got a video saying "It's been postponed, an entirely different episode will air next week because we're retooling the show". Yeah, a retool immediately after the first episode.
Then episode deadlines kept getting missed, the promised "short Demo Reel videos between episodes" never happened, and eventually they realized it couldn't be done and returned to the Nostalgia Critic.

The reason he quit NC in the first place is that he believed he ran out of ideas (in reality, he was just burnt out from making weekly videos for years). Hence why he now operates on a bi-weekly schedule. Personally, I feel he should have done that before attempting to retire the first time, and then use the time between to try out new series. Hindsight though...

I took a long pause from the Nostalgia Critic.. over a year. I was kinda tired of his stuff. I recently got back to his site and watched a few of his new videos, they are really good and i ask myself if the people in his videos are his friends or actual actors on contract (or both) ... they are surprisingly good at what they do. And i especially like those "What you didn't know about..." and old vs new videos.

I hope he follows this up with a old vs new segment.

I think he said all he wanted to say about the movies here.
There really isn't even a comparison, old wins by a light year. 2000 looks like a complete mess.

Also, he just did an Old vs New with the Spider-Man movies.

The other people in Doug's videos are actors first and foremost. They auditioned for the job and he pays them. If he was going to let his friends act in his videos, he'd have more than two of them.

On a secondary level, apparently everyone he works with (behind the scenes as well) becomes more than friends, they're a kind of second family.

Nostalgia Critic was originally a smaller production, and then he tried to "graduate" into making Demo Reel and hired extra staff for it, but that show failed, so he brought back Nostalgia Critic and turned it into a larger production, that way he wouldn't have to fire anyone.

So that explains why the black guy & chick are always in his videos.

Another thing I want to add, I'm not really a big fan of Obscurus Lupa, I actually think that when Phelous (dude is awesome btw) makes videos together with her that something gets lost and the videos are not as fun anymore. Dude needs to do videos on his own/alone and then they shine.

That said, I like the Baywatch "reviewes" of Lupa, those are fun to watch. Maybe because I've seen a lot of this junk when it aired.

Huh? Phelous does his own videos. A little more frequently than Lupa.

I've only seen a few of Lupa's review, and outside the Utena movie review, I don't find them that entertaining. And the Utena one was amusing for the guy co-reviewing with her.

As in Revolutionary Girl Utena?
That wasn't Lupa, that was JesuOtaku. She's one of the anime reviewers (though if TVTropes is anything to go by, she's a big meanie troll on Twitter or something)

Whoops. Got the two mixed up. I don't think I've ever seen a Lupa review then.
