The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

I'm just saying, since I remember when he and Nerd did a review and you got Nerd fanboys going all apeshit in GAF.

That was a fun review.

I think my favorite bit was the mistakes during the "cartoon" segment, reflecting the immense number of mistakes the show had (different voices, different mask colors)
Along with Brentalfloss as Vanilla Ice.

They're right though, the movie sucks but it's not the worst TMNT thing in the world.

Yeah as long as TMNT3 and Next Mutation exist, it can't be the worst.

With that said the movie is terrible but I do hope it exists as a way to finance the IDW comic.

Brentalfloss' cameo was rather funny, plus I liked all the nods to the game & all those animation errors that would happen (reminds me when James did that Top 20 Animation Mistakes video).

Though uh, wow, I sure didn't recognize anyone during the music part, aside from Film Brain.

My one one one minor complain on the AVGN crossover is that I wish the "mistakes" were introduced a little more obtusely. Like, I wish they didn't mention the voices not matching, just switched glasses, and then pointed out the errors in more obvious ways. More subtle.

Still, that was a fun episode. Has either the critic or the nerd done a full retrospective of the cartoon show?

James has, yes. Back in 2011. It's a 3-parter, plus some other stuff he did.

Part 1 (First season & the major characters)
Part 2 (Look at running themes)
Part 3 (Look at each individual season)
Top 20 Turtle Flubs (animation errors, mismatching voices, etc.)
Live Action Leftovers (the Coming Out of Our Shells tours, Next Mutation, etc.)

48,000 dollars for that?!

"With the $89,757 that we received from Indiegogo we used $47,767.67 on Indiegogo fees, perks (ordering, shipping and shipping supplies), studio upgrades,a studio/filming insurance upgrade, new equipment, sets and the initial costs for this show (5 filmed episodes and 5 test episodes)."

That was just 1 of 10 episodes shot.

They wasted the money,

They wasted the money,

Yeah, I'm pretty shocked with the final result. I was expecting something at least on par with a RedLetterMedia production. I hope this is literally just a test episode, and isn't indicative of the final product. I mean, the audio and video alone...I know they can do better than that, because I've seen better from them before.

Whatever, will still watch for Brad. Just can't hate that guy. :)

That game show was truly cringe-worthy.

the logo sucked, the concept sucked, and nothing interesting happen. the lack of an audience was really kind of weird. i don't know why it's just brad asking questions for thirty minutes. clearly this could be done in ten.

here's an idea - stream it live, have some sort of audience participation, and keep it to ten minute episodes once a week or something.

I still can't get over the price tag of this thing; I can't even point to where the money went.

The prize money is only $100 too. They definitely diverted those funds unless they're complete dumbasses (which is a possibility). I'm under the impression that Brad lives a little aways from the studio (maybe an hour or two or three) so I would assume they would pay him upfront to cover his gas and a little more for incentive. But judging by the quality of the set, the use of two new non-speaking actors, the new equipment (hah!) I would assume the real cost is closer to 1 or 2 grand for everything. And that's including prize money. 3 grand tops.

One of those actors is Doug and Rob's dad, so he probably didn't get paid.

Channel Awesome seriously needs a major management overhaul if this was acceptable to them. The CEO Mike Michaud seems to be the big issue in everything.

The guy in white, correct? I suspected it. And I know their dad makes a lot of props too (I would assume they at least pay for the materials).

So a budget of 2-3 Grand would seem accurate. I'm going to make a guess that Malcom and Tamara are paid about $200 per video.

Apparently, according to Phelous and Lupa that episode was pretty old. So I dunno how much of a test it would be if it's that old.

I haven't even seen this game show either. I'm almost afraid to. I'd probably feel bad for them after whatever that other show they tried out (And canceled the NC for) failed.

I'd hate to think Doug is only able to do his one big character. He keeps trying to break away from it. At least he gets to be himself when he does shows with his brother. I love watching those two talk about movies.

the show is mostly brad jones asking questions from cards in a room. there is no audience, and so it's really weird to watch. it's also really boring because it always cuts from brad when he's done asking questions and back to him when he starts again. it just feels really one note.

What is this gameshow people are talking about? How much is Doug involved in it?

Here
He appears at the end.

It's been in development for at least two years now, their IndieGoGo campaign was held to fund this and other shows (that haven't gotten off the ground)
Apparently it went through a number of reshoots and production issues.

Doug will be at C2E2 later this month. Not sure if I should ask (he probably will get a lot of people asking). Brad might also be there.

Wow. I mean, wow. Since it's a test episode I can excuse the set and the audio. But even ignoring that, the content was super boring. Doug's vision and humor seem to be very narrow these days.

This is honestly the weirdest thing. 40 minutes is much too long for a single-round gameshow that's just Q&A. It should be aiming at about a network TV halfhour slot length (so like 22-25 minutes).

The Double Dare influence is clear in the games, but it needs more of those. Instead of asking both contestants, he should ask one, and if they don't know they can pass it, and if they don't know either then it will lead to a "physical challenge".
Also, for someone that hates movies that are "unoriginal", the whole "killer game show" concept is nothing new. Only those were over-the-top in how violent they were. This was just a normal-ass game show but with lame dark humor. Not to mention the major whiplash in the questions. "Pop culture, pop culture, pop culture, TRAGIC REAL LIFE INCIDENT, pop culture"
The mystery box thing was completely pointless. "Hur hur he's talking like someone now". It was even worse since the guy that kept getting the "punishments" barely got any answers.

As for other issues, they've been said again and again.

Doug is odd. He knows he can be funny, he knows he can do serious stuff with the editorials. He knows he can deliver smarter humor... but he does stuff like this. It makes no sense.

well doug thinks that conceptually things being done at another person's expense is what creates humor. so the disparity between normal people and dark murderous game show is probably what he finds inherently funny. he also thought demo reel was a good idea: a show about a guy making bad movies on purpose not because he was misguided, but because he wanted to ruin hollywood with awful parodies (what).

the lost in translation episode of demo reel should have been the concept for the show: a guy making really awful movie mashups (and wanting to do them well) without realizing he's actually living in movie mashups (and doing it better than when he exerts effort into his work). ironically, i don't think doug realized he had stumbled onto a good idea there because it quickly went into conspiracy plots and weird side characters and shit.

same goes with the game show. jontron's malkovich show (i know it's fake) was funnier because it was shorter, more energetic, and it didn't make sense. people stumbling onto the right answers is funnier than asking trivia questions from the last 30 years and making quips about them.

God I love the Malkovich show.

"WHERE'S MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER??"

From what I've heard, they refilmed that episode 17 times, or an absurd amount of times redoing the same jokes and questions. Also they kinda want to pitch this to maybe get it on TV.

I still enjoy Space Jam and Jingle All the Way. But I can see where he's coming from.

Man he really hates LegendaryGoji unlike his brother lol

But he doesn't hate it, he eventually realized its merits.
However, a lot of other people hated it because "barely any Godzilla", even though many of the Japanese movies barely had Godzilla.

Or rather, the ones that people did see (particularly the MS3K ones) featured plenty of monster shots... even though they're arguably the worse Goji films lol

Though I did enjoy the editorial as a whole, I thought his comparison of CGI to the gameplay offered by the original SMB was questionable, and didn't make much sense. My problem with it, is that games had to focus on gameplay during those times, because technical limitations prevented anything but the most barest of stories. The thing is, practical effects, good plots, and well-written characters all existed in film before CGI was invented, and the focus on CGI moved focus away from all them.

I'd instead think that the idea that games have to be "cinematic" to be successful (*cough*TheOrder*cough*) would have been a better comparison to make.
