well the problem would be whether to make it using FFXII's battle system or keeping the old. Personally my taste for turn based battles in RPG's have grown stale after nearly a decade of playing JRPGs.

You would get the true die hard JRPG fans wanting turn based action but it would seem outdated to some after what was done with FFXII

The combat would definitely be more streamlined. FFX-2,FF12 and from what we've seen of FF13, suggest thats the direciton Square are taking. I have faith in them that they'll find a balanced system that'll allow the best of both worlds. Fast gameplay based on the original FF7 combat system. Don't expect any of that battle twirl shit to survive either.

I hope to hell not. FFXII battle system blew, and I hope it never returns.

FF12? Why do people love that game so much? It was pure crap to me. The battle system was the most boring, stale, repetitive thing I've ever seen in an RPG. 12 was meant to be a part of the FFMMORPG, you can tell simply by looking at the areas, battle system and abilities available. It was just a cut and paste.

I'd rather have a KH battle system or something. A battle system that's fast and lets em do what I want to do right away, I'd rather have turn based battles over 12's horrendous system.

The Twisted Headband is a life saver, literally :p It always makes Endure cast, so if you DO die, you are just spit out of your mission. I don't think there are any penalties either. I didn't even know you could be thrown out to the main menu if you died, and I'm at the end of the game now.

Endure status prevents flinching and knockdown. With this effect active, enemy attacks cannot interrupt Zack's actions, though he will incur damage as usual. That's it. When he diies in a mission he will always return, fully healed and without penalty, to the save point where you entered the mission menu, retaining all experience and items gained prior. Try it and see.

Even still, Endure is an exceedingly useful status, so until you get Genji Armor you probably won't want to be caught without a Twisted Headband.

One quick question though. For New Game +, do you keep your mission progress? If not, I guess I'll have to go through the other 50%.

To the best of my knowledge (I haven't checked this out myself but I've spoken with people who have) mission progress is one of the few things you don't keep in a New Game+. This is a good thing because it allows you to obtain all mission rewards, including treasure chests, more than once.

Edit: CrushDance, FFXII is an incredibly engaging game. Have you played it? And if so, for how long? I've poured about 70 hours into it so far and it feels like it still has a lot to offer. The things players like Ashe10 (LINK CONTAINS CC SPOILERS) are doing with FFXII makes it one of my favorite FF games without a doubt.

Am having fun with this, much more so than the original FF VII. The environments are a bit generic, but overall I am finding myself enjoying the battle system. Probably because I didn't approach the game scientifically.

Personally I don't care if the battle system isn't as in-depth (though I did wish for a FF XII style combat - I LOVE it haters), so long as I can squeeze all sort of fun out of it. And hell I am already enjoying this far more than even some main FF games (won't be named for fear of reprisal).

About my only complain so far are the horribly generic dungeons and the lack of FF XII style open design.

I began playing this game about two weeks ago sporadically. I'm on vacation right now and trying to play through Hard. I'm in the slums. My problem is I'm getting slaughtered by the enemies. Is there any item that will help me so early in the game or is there an area/mission I can go to grind?

What! I didn't know this! Chripes, I have an inventory slot to open!

I'm at the end now, only 55% done with the missions so it looks like I'll be grinding them to 100% for a few days. That one with the
1000 Shinra Security forces
was a total bitch. I came to 1HP (being around 49,000 mind you) because they all randomly came up and punched me in the back for massive damage. I finally got through it, but it took something like 30 minutes, even with Assault Twister for the large groups. Its best not to do that mission if you are tired as well, it gets very boring :lol

I agree, I did not like FFXII's battle system.

I do hope a FF7 remake would use a mix of FF: Crisis Core and FF13's battle system, if it ever gets made.

I prefer pairing Hell Blizzaga with Status Ward because it's the only spell in the Hell class that causes Stun in addition to the other effects (and thus protects you from the same).

Hey, I'm trying this and its not working? When I hit triangle in the status menu, I see no additional status wards, what gives?

Also, is there any way I can convert the traits of purple materia (xxx Up) to other materia? Every time I try, I just end up with xxx Up +whatever traits the other materia has.

Edit:
Nevermind, Managed to use Master Wall and got what I wanted :)
naRQnxGOo.jpg

A word of warning though, you should only do this when you feel you have enough +ATK points in the materia. If you try to combine other materia and keep it going up, You'll find that you need +ATK Items to keep it going.

If you keep it as a ATK UP++, you can combine it with XXX Up+ and and item that increases the XXX Up+ 's status which then becomes converted in +ATK.

IE: You have ATK UP++ and MAG UP+ +11MAG. Use a +MAG item in the fusion, and your total +MAG will be converted into +ATK.

No kidding. Beating that mission was much more tedious than
Minerva in 9-6-6, and I've long since maxed out my stats. After I beat her I equipped Status Strike, Hell Blizzaga and Assault Twister+ and tackled that 1000 soldiers mission, which I'd been dreading since I first saw it on the mission screen. It was easy since I was so strong (there's nothing like seeing ten soldiers drop in a perfect circle at your feet after a single Assault Twister+), but it took forever. I never want to play through that bastard again. I mean, I even thought 200 was a little much.

Hey, I'm trying this and its not working? When I hit triangle in the status menu, I see no additional status wards, what gives?

I just checked, and the only ability that will show up is Status Ward, regardless of which statuses you're being protected from.

Me too! Definitely one of the game's funniest moments. Anyone who detests the missions should at least try hers.

Favorite piece from the OST.

Price of Freedom is a fantastic song. My other favorite is Moonlight Wandering. I was gobsmacked to learn that it came from FFVII: Last Order. I watched it the other day and I think Crisis Core's version of the song sounds much better. Is it just me, or did they improve it?

Ya that's a great one too. I'm actually surprised how much I like the OST. Think it's the first FF OST i've liked since Uematsu has left.

I asked earlier...but is there any advice anyone can provide in helping me improve my character in Hard? I decided to play through on this difficulty...and it seems the monsters are way to powerful...while I'm underpowered.

Hard mode is probably more relevant as a New Game+ challenge.

I initially started in there as well, but then restarted in Normal when I realized all it functionally did was to prolong combat by a factor of 5 or so. Very tedious.

ugh why are people hyped about FF13's battle system being based on FF12's...

you guys have to realize how slow and horrible it can be...

i know turn-based isn't coming back any time soon... but something like KH would be perfect... and i know it's lame to say FF should be more like KH... but in terms of a battle system KH was pretty awesome...

i played through my first time on hard... it was facking difficult...... everything will be rediculously hard.. and it took me like a long ass time to finish it... (i bought game at launch and just finished it a couple days ago) but just do missions over and over and try to find easy ways to kill each enemy...

save lots...

there weren't really specific missions i did that were any better for leveling... and i only finished like 30% of the missions... so i dunno...

if i knew there was a new game + i would have ran through normal first.. lol

Just started playing it today. Fucking awesome game so far. My only gripe is the woman's voice at the beginning and end of EVERY single battle. It gets annoying fast... and there's no options menu to speak of to disable it. Oh well, it's a minor complaint.

Other than that, Zack is a total badass and I'm really liking things so far.

Argh. I guess my problem is...in certain situations...I can die in one hit. The one that stands out in my mind is the materia hunter mission where you go against Bahamut. If your barrier runs out and he does certain attacks which outright kill me. Or in the missions which involve the Angeal creatures, a jump will kill me or leave me in critical. I just want to know how to strengthen myself. But I guess I'll try doing missions over and over.

Its as simple as you want it to be, grab the materia, put them in the altar and youre done, takes only like 5 to 10 minutes

The loading times can be annoying, but who cares. The title is damn near perfect for fans of the genre.

The loading of a cutscene after another one is pretty annoying. I should time the next one, but that's why I play in front of the TV :)

Yeah I've been sitting in the Sector 8 Fountain area just playing missions for the last few hours, and even though the missions are rather the same, it's addicting to kick some ass.

I like this game, but am not sure if I like Zack yet. TBD.

You ought to be sent to the guillotine for saying that. Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.. is NOT an awesome battle system.

Wow just got the OST and it kicks all sorts off ass.
Like I read above The Price of Freedom is soo good. As all of the CC themed tracks.

In the middle portion of Fullfiled Desire (this is the part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSfg-Fc2Eeo&feature=related) there is the FFVII battle theme fully orchestrated. If square is ever going to make a FFVII remake they need to put this orchestrated theme in. So awesome!

Spam your most powerful attack. It will probably be a spell, so have a decent amount of ethers handy. Probably no more than 15 will be necessary, but that's just a ballpark estimate so I could be way off. Gravity is nice. You'll want to switch to something else when it starts doing less damage, though. Don't worry too much about your level unless you seem markedly underpowered. You should be able to compensate for any weakness by using stat-boosting accessories. MAG is the stat that controls your magic's potency. By this point in the game you should have a nice variety to choose from, so go ahead and equip the best you've got.

Anyone know how to get all the Genji stuff? Armor, helmet, gloves etc?

They're all found through missions, in one fashion or another. Check this guide. CTRL+F, search for "Genji." Genji Shield is the toughest to get, but good God is it ever worth it. This accessory FAQ describes what each item does.

Edit: D'oh, greatestjediever is correct about the Genji Armor.

Roxas said:

Genji Armor is missable. You'll need to have gotten the Phoenix materia and unlocked its DMW in order to get it. Once you have gotten 100% on all DMW (seen all the cutscenes for all the DMWs), you'll receive the item once you check the DMW list.

Genji Helmet is buyable from the Net Shop Shade for 1,000,000 gil (if you use Mug + Moogle's Armlet to get constant rare steals/drops you'll probably be able to sell a bunch of junk to make the money easy)

Genji Gloves is found in a chest on mission 9-6-4

Genji Shield requires you to do all the moves on a Magic Pot in mission 7-6-6. Requires: Gil Toss, Costly Punch, 99999 damage, and Octaslash. Gil toss is easy to do, and if you have Costly Punch + Genji Gloves/Brutal to break the 9999 damage barrier you can take care of those two pretty easily. The tricky part is getting Octaslash (and not some other offensive DMW) to trigger before the Magic Pot decides to run away. I would buy several Octaslash materia and equip them when you're ready to increase the chances of you triggering Octaslash over the other DMWs and just wait and pray until it hits.

I unfortunately missed the Phoenix materia and wasn't able to get the Armor :(.

I'm about 10 hours in... and the loading is just driving me crazy. It takes about 5-10 seconds of black screen for almost every area/cutscene transition.

Is that normal? How much faster are the loads on the PSP slim (this is on a launch PSP).

I played it on a slim, and there were some damn long loads, mostly around FMV's. The environment loads weren't bad.

Really? FMVs were the only things that didn't cause long loads for me. It just jumped right into one when one was going to be played.

The worst are the in-engine cutscenes. Walk into a trigger volume, black screen for 10 seconds. Fades up to 4 lines of dialog, fade back to black for 10 seconds. Fades up to 5 more lines of dialog, fade to black.

And walking around Midgar is a huge pain... every zone takes forever to load.

Yeah, the loading time on the original PSP is pretty annoying. I played most of the game via iso dump and put up with stuttering FMVs until the end of the game when the ending movie stuttered so bad that the sound and video became out of sync. At that point I switched over to my UMD and replayed the ending to get the full effect.
