The one thing you can't be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- Gay

It's a 2 hour movie about people in spandex punching the shit out of each other. Being gay doesn't have the time to enter into that outside of some throw off line.

Also, why do we need to have gay character? If gays are 10% of the population then what percent of superheroes would be gay? Is this to make gay kids feel better?

This is the movie industry we're talking about and not the teeny tiny world of comic books.

I could have sworn Iron Man managed to slip in that Tony was a womanizer, and the recent Superman movie managed to slip in Clark's sexuality by giving him a love interest. But yeah, sexuality never is seen in action movies.

Captain America 4:

Widow: so I see you haven't found a lucky girl yet.

*captain puts his hands on his hip and looks at the sky*

Captain: you know...maybe it will be a lucky guy.

I just don't see it being an issue but I wouldn't hate it either, I would prefer if it was subtle and not in your face "we are gay now!"

It's my opinion. If it gets better than the original source, okay, but it rarely does. I didn't watch IM3 and I didn't read GOTG comics but I could see myself disappointed if they changed the characterization I was expecting. The majority of the cast in MCU are faithful enough for me. Only Hawkeye isn't like he supposed to be but let's see how he turns out to be in AoU.

I also live in a love/hate story with Game of Thrones because of stuff like this, so the problem must be on me. I don't like changing in characters even if it's for the sake of diversity.

So only if its characters you have read is it not ok or if they are only faithful enough to your standards? I've read guardians of the galaxy, and the movie is a very different beast, and I'm ok with that. (though I wish gamorra and drax would get an upgrade power wise) It worked out to a great movie. Black widow is quite a bit different from her comic counterpart, more so then other characters people complain about, but that instance is ok apparently.

Marvel and DC aren't going to jeopardise a potential billion dollar return on their investment just so a small minority can feel more included.

You can say that your corner of the world is more progressive (and media content should reflect that) all you like but the pool that these companies swim in is a lot bigger.

1 example isn't a whole lot better than 0.

But there have been a few times between seasons 1 and 2 of SHIELD where I've been kinda given pause about Simmons and Skye. Brief moments; probably nothing, but if it blossomed out I wouldn't be surprised.

It's pretty gross you're okay with continuing to pander to the worst demographic of people who won't see something because icky gay people.

He's not taking a side he's just stating the raw truth here. This is business on a massive scale and money will always win.

It's not saying it's right or wrong it's just laying out the reasoning.

Title seems unnecessarily inflammatory - I'm pretty sure you can be gay in Marvels movies. There just aren't any prominent gay characters yet. I hope that changes soon, but don't think there's any huge reason to get upset at Marvel. It would be a different matter entirely if they had inserted a character who had always been gay in the comics into the movies, and made them straight in the process.

It's complicated. There are tons of universes and interpretations of the characters in the comic books. I said that I prefer to have the faithful characterization as possible. I know they cant adapt everything and they must modify things so the plot can become better and interesting in a 2h live action adaptation.

But changing them to be gay would be something done just to appease the LGBT community and probably unecessary to the plot (this an action superhero movie). An obvious move to reach a targeted audience. Sexuality is one of the most important things that defines us as people and I don't like when they change it for that purpose. Sorry but that's how I feel.

But as I said, I'm totally okay for the inclusion of Marvel gay characters in the MCU. I just don't want to change the ones who aren't. Unless if they are gay in some established arc like gay Wolverine. I wouldn't mind using his gay version as it is a source material.

Marvel really needs to start bringing in the C-list heroes on the Big Screen for Thanos to kill along with Hawkeye in Infinity War

All the more reason to dust off that Runaways movie that they shelved in the Avengers lead-up.

Runaways would also singlehandedly add a lot to the representation of minorities and women as leads in MCU.

Get on it Marvel. If you can do fucking Ant-Man with a straight face, you can do Runaways no problem.

Runaways would be perfect for a TV show, but Netflix apparently likes Iron fist etc. more :(

Well, it took about ten years to get a black lead and a female lead.

Give it another ten, you'll get a gay lead...

Ideally.

Honestly, even now I'm hardpressed to try and remember which Marvel characters are gay. Being gay shouldn't really be the main thing, just a part of them, right? People are more than their sexual orientation.

Edit: I came back to re-edit this because OP is wrong since the upcoming Netflix Jessica Jones show will have prominent lesbian relationship involving two supporting characters. There's a photo here:

Edit: Okay, not wrong-wrong. Just saying, it is happening. Slowly, but it's happening.

Everybody loves lesbians though so that doesn't count. :p

In all seriousness, yeah give it time.

sexuality bending, just like racebending, is downright stupid.

Sexuality bending, just like racebending, only makes sense when it is to give a minority some chance because every single character with a chance for adaptation was created when homosexuality was a disease
