The Order 1886 Review Thread

A lot of the media (like Game Informer, Eurogamer, and IGN) really, really liked Asura's Wrath.

Is the claim now that they actually do like the mostly non-interactive cinematic game but only if it's Japanese? Because that would be absurd.

The fact that reviewers have double standards depending on the game and its developer/publisher is clearly true.

But the problem with The Order is that the game tries to do something that many people (particularly among the press) nowadays simply don't appreciate.
You have to be open world, you have to put the player always in control, you need at least a decent co-op mode, you need replayability with tons of useless fetch quests. If you try to innovate within that formula is the icing on the cake.
Those are the guidelines if you want to make a well recevied/scored game today.
RAD decided to make an interactive movie with third person shooter sections, they're getting shit for it. Same shit that David Cage and others got plain and simple.
The way they handled their PR which was stupidly shady, trying to hide what the game was for too long (because they knew that it wasn't what most people wanted) didn't help.
Still there is a market for these titles. There are people who actually like these kind of experiences so it's up to them if this game will be successful on the market or not.

This is absolutely not true. I mean just look at TLOU.

This is so common here.

Its that same old ugly 'hype' phenomenon that causes otherwise rational people to lose their heads completely, and abandon all of the defence mechanisms consumers have developed over years of being advertised and marketed to.

Some people seem unable to separate excitement from crazy. It gets to a point where they go so far down one road, there is no turning back.

The games industry, and community, would be a much better place for everyone if people could just chill out, be a bit less hysterical, and a bit more critical, and channel enthusiasm in more constructive ways than is the case right now.

Its cool to be excited and passionate about your hobby, but don't lose your head.

It's interesting that this is almost the exact antithesis of the "the internet is too cynical about things" sentiment that was being discussed yesterday.

Best game released this gen not including remasters.

I think it's actually funny people quote Driveclub as being bad. Most Driveclub owners will tell you it's one of the best racing games you can play.

It's also funny how people just take reviewers and critics for their word. Glad I don't blindly follow what they say or I'd miss out on some games (ie Driveclub).

Well, you have two sides to that argument. I can't think of anyone I personally know in my circle of friends who thought Driveclub was anything other than bad (we all are PlayStation fans).

But that's all off-topic.

The Order: 1886 has some really special pieces, but just needed more emphasis on gameplay and content. I wouldn't have minded a worse looking game with 30% more of its resources allocated to gameplay. I think it would have benefited greatly.

How much did Ryse sell on the xbone? Im betting the order will sell better because of the larger install base and more preorders, but I wonder by how much.

Don't see why that matters, but I think it was 430k-some-odd units according to LTD figures from Microsoft.

Edit: 431k when figures released January 2014. Not sure if there's anything more recent (thought I read DR3 broke a million at some point, where it was only halfway there in that batch of LTD figures).

So what kind of mechanics are in this game other than run, crouch, cover, shoot, and presumably melee? I don't know much about how this game actually plays. Does it offer anything beyond those basics? If not, does it do anything interesting with the enemy encounters, like RE4 did?

There's a bullet time mode that lets you just auto target enemies, but that's about it.

It seems really barebones in terms of gameplay mechanics.

so much truth here - it hurts
and people are actually saying that now is the best time for gaming due to the sheer variety and diversity of games/experiences

but it seems like in the end, people are just looking for more of the same?

How do people even say this when games like last of us are critical darlings. Sure open world is the a formula and you can have useless fetch quests. But you can ignore all of that if it's done really well.

Considering this was Sony's Ryse more or less, how much did Ryse sell on the xbone? Im betting the order will sell better because of the larger install base and more preorders, but I wonder by how much.

Was 431k at the end of 2013. I'll be a optimistic and add another 200k on top of that.

So even with the reviews it's getting, The order should easily clear 600k. 1.5-2m lifetime is my guess.

I'd fit the bill as a PS fanboy, having prefered PS systems since 1995. But Sony exclusives have been very hit and miss to me since halfway through the PS3 generation. They aren't the type of games I blindly buy. I've been burned by GT5, Twisted Metal, Killzone 3 and more. My Ps4 introduction started with the terrible Shadow Fall. Knack I borrowed and was also shit.

Infamous Second Son was actually good value, but not as good as Infamous 2 imho (the game is lacking something). Driveclub has also been good value so far, though it was a complete mess during launch.

I honestly think I will like The Order much more than Knack or SF, it might even be a Resistance 3 surprise to me. Who knows. But I have a hard time buying this for the full whack right now.

This is surely a dumb junior question but what exactly would cause you to get banned in a review thread? Why is that a gigantic running joke?

Max Payne 3 was also viewed quite favorably, and Max Payne 3 is arguably the closest thing to The Order if you needed to compare it to something.

I was gonna read this thread but it's way too fast.

Where are the play by play highlights

Do you know that guy who was really into Star Wars and just refused to admit the prequel movies were bad for a really long time and got upset when you said they were to the point where you just realized it's better to stop talking about it

What if that guy were lots of guys

Sony strikes out again.

Naughty Dog is Sony's only saving grace first party wise.

Yeah unless santa monica evolve the GOW formula wws is mainly mediocrity bar ND. Or who knows, maybe evolution and GG will get it together eventually and its all just start of a new gen syndrome.

I was going to say santa monica AND polyphony back there. I need some caffeine in me.

TLOU has a lot of actual gameplay btw. Theres branching paths along the way, thing you can do in certain areas (shiv doors and safes), a crafting and upgrade system, and its a hell of a lot longer of a game.

Yes, like when that huge open world collect-a-thon Walking Dead game won all those GOTY awards. Or TLOU. Stop it.

Isn't that just the US?

Because The Order will not get that much.

some people freak out when games review badly. Or they show their inner fanboy.

Or poor people like Tetsuo who get banned for a brilliant joke.

Has The Register review been posted? Don't really feel like trawling through 80~ pages.

Sony was obviously hoping The Order: 1886 would be the Holy Grail of exclusive releases for the PS4, but early rumours of shaky game mechanics and overly long cutscenes combined with jilted quick time events seemed like a curse from Morgan Le Fay.

The Order: 1886 is stunning and surely the best-looking game that I've seen on the PlayStation 4. Well done! Ready at Dawn, Fellini would be proud of your cinematic devices, the grainy imperfections and constantly changing depth of field make the visuals truly immersive (and almost make you feel like you're playing on your PC).

Familiar real world locales such as the London Underground, the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, Mayfair and Whitechapel are all given a sinister makeover. The character models are suitably impressive, every whisker and eyelash is brought to life with an unnerving level of precision, as is the lip-syncing and voice acting, which sports a breathtaking attention to detail.

The Order: 1886's gameplay mechanics depend heavily on cutscenes and quick time events (QTEs). When mixed with combat, I found these surprisingly enjoyable and exciting. This may be controversial, but I wish more games had them, as it stops me zoning out. For example, early on, while picking my nose, I missed a QTE cue and some arsehole cockney redcoat snatched my gun.

Despite negative rumours stoking up plenty of clickbait out there, going into The Order: 1886 I was aware that it was a linear single player experience with a constructed narrative and can be more positive about the game as a result.

This is not an inspired game and there’s nothing new here (sorry, Sony), but ultimately I had fun playing this game. Unfortunately, it was not £50's worth of fun, especially since I feel it doesn’t have the replay value of a game like Wolfenstein.

Yet one of the great things about this game is that I can finish it and feel good about completing it. Experiencing the weaving and often thrilling narrative from beginning to end is the point, rather than making a huge open world 80-hour game just for the sake of it.

I can promise it won’t be stuck on the shelf with all those other games that are impossible to finish if you have a day job. I reckon this interactive immersive sinister yarn will entertain you for longer than five hours, no matter what YouTube says. Alternating current FTW! ®

3.5/5 - The Register - The Order: 1886 – Round Table game's all right on the knight

You would do well to look at the top rated games on Metacritic for 2014. Of course there are open-world games like Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, we've also got stuff like Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Last of Us Remastered, Dark Souls II, Bayonetta 2, Divinity: Original Sin, Shovel Knight, and a slew of other indie games.

No, the claim is that The Order isn't fun while many reviewers liked what they did in Asura's Wrath. I don't know what you're confused about; just because games have similar mechanics, it doesn't mean that they're executed in the same way, as you can clearly see.

3hrs of gameplay? what in the living fuck. And people are still paying $60 for this?
No matter how you cut it that is ridiculous. Not because of the length of time you get, but because it doesn't seem any of it is skill-based, i.e that's the average time for someone who's on Normal, not very experienced in the game and playing for the first time.

Game doesn't even lend itself well to speedruns i.e a Resident Evil or Ninja Gaiden because you can't skip the cutscenes.

Artificial padding....with cutscenes.

Driveclub's not even the best racing game released this gen. Not even second.
