Texan here. Yes things have been open, but people have still been strictly following social distancing and wear masks here.


But before that Texas was one of the worst states in the country for awhile there. Our numbers were absolutely insane.

I'll probably wear my mask for awhile longer just to be safe, but it's refreshing to see things finally start getting back to normal. I've also noticed that most people I know have reacted the same way in that they will still be wearing their masks out of caution.


People aren't dumb. They know the risk isn't magically gone just because the White House put out a tweet.

The risk is gone for you when you are fully vaccinated. To argue otherwise is just being anti-science.

You haven't been paying attention. Those who love masks will keep wearing them forever and will not agree with any CDC recommendations to remove mandates until the virus has been completely wiped off the face of the planet (which will never ever happen). Based on their gut, this is all happening too soon and they are making a huge mistake!

For example if a vaccine card must be presented to enter an establishment what prevents people from getting a fake one? Barcode or QR code would be the only way to prevent this. But then that means every shop will need unique barcode and QR code readers and some one that can trouble shoot the reader when it doesn't work correctly. Even if this happens then it means the readers are pinging out to the medical database to verify the card is correct. This has so many HIPPA violations that it seems impossible not to mention it opens up security attack avenues.

To me it seems reasonable that local Governments will set requirement thresholds. "Soon as X amount of people are vaccinated in the state we will match our guidelines to the CDC removing requirements for social distancing indoors." Each state will have their own paths to reopening.

For example in OR the governor has stated that stores can remove the mask requirement if they verify all users coming into the store have been vaccinated. They say if they chose to not deal with the hassle then to wait for further guidelines to be given out over the next few days. A recovery plan is being built and I have no idea how strict it will be for my state but am excited to see what it is.

Agreed on this too. You won't be able to weed out who's had the vaccine with or without a card. If it was a requirement to have a card; of course people can easily get around that. Besides, we've never had to go to that extreme with previous vaccines. It all comes down to the individual owning up to taking care of their own health. People just need to do the smart/responsible thing and get the vaccine. Not just once but follow-up and get additional booster shots if necessary.

I still believe that it's not a great time to be crowding gathering though. Before this virus, people acted extremely irresponible during normal flu seasons and infecting entire groups/families by simply not going out or taking better care at distancing in public. The lesson that "should have been learned" is that those who feel sick with anything -- need to stay at home. Regular influenza carries a high risk too and yet only a small percentage were getting vaccines for that. So, this is testing things on a much larger scale. If someone does feel like leaving the mask on for a year...so what? If we see the numbers drop down into the 100's for new cases in the next 12-months...only then I would say it's "safe" to start returning to regular activities. The numbers are still pretty bloody high. Once again, making this a challenge for people to start bring back normality with moderation.

Nope, sure hasn't. (and it wasn't because people still weren't going out. Restaurants, bars, lots of social things were all packed. Sure, there were was some mitigation being done on the private business level, but not enough to really offset anything. Yep. The New Segregation is coming and in some states/countries, already here. The good thing is for "extra dirty" people like me who refuse to get either one* is that I'm pretty creative with my family time and I don't need to go to crowded venues to have fun. I'll miss it, of course, but any place at this point that turns me away at the door based on either standard will lose my money forever. I am one grudge-holding SOB, I will admit. Oh and in before "muh freedomz".

Newer studies also show that there's 3.5x more protection giving doses 12 weeks in between for the mRNA vaccines. But yes vaccinating 2x more people at 0,80 than x at 0,95 was a good choice.

Exactly around 12 weeks, not earlier/not later, for the studied groups according to some news report.

What's the problem? More people want the vaccine according to polls(closer to 80% than the USA's 60%). It's possible to get closer to herd immunity with vaccines there. Different countries, different solutions.

Because the tests are sensitive enough to detect CV, but the person is asymptomatic. That's what happens to you after the vaccine. You can still contract the virus but very likely there will be no symptoms or contagiousness. It is essentially a 100% chance you will not die from CV if you are vaccinated

The number of those who caught the virus that had the vaccination is close to zero. If you get the vaccination, follow-up, and boost (if necessary); chances are you will not get the virus at all. If a new strain comes through -- it's possible. That's why CDC posted that announcement, albiet should have been more elaborate because we know how people ready things on the internet. But they are correct, those who are regularly vaxed do not need to wear the mask, unless they choose to.

I understand caution because I would hate for us to go backwards but statistically masks don’t do anything besides prevent the spread of droplets. Just look at Florida and Texas. Their cases are still plummeting with no form of restrictions.

I feel personally attacked.

My kids are still not vaccinated so I am gonna continue wearing the mask for now.

That's how my wife and I feel. We still want our children masking due to them not being vaccinated, and it isn't fair to them (not to mention hard to enforce) if we don't wear one. Besides, my son's school won't be dropping masks any time soon.

If I'm by myself though, that may be another story....except for maybe the above mentioned ugly part.

Geez, and I just did my monthly Costco shopping. Had I waited a few more days I could have gone maskless. Glad to see many businesses going maskless. Will be interesting to see who clings on to those damned things. I will likely avoid any place that requires a mask going forward.

Well I'll end with an agreement to a degree with you. The fact you remain positive about this is a mindset myself and many others could benefit from. I agree, masks won't stop the spread - only to a measure lower risk of the infected from worsening the spread. Then again, I guess that depends using a decent mask which covers that nose and mouth. Anyway, didn't mean to piss a bunch of folks off in the thread. I too wish to go out again without feeling danger. Of course, progress like you're seeing is much farther off where I'm at and restrictions are still pretty high out here. Have a great weekend and no hard feelings.
