Sony may win the console battle with Microsoft but it may very well lose the war. Even Microsoft seems to acknowledge they are looking to compete with Google and Amazon and Sony isn't even their concern anymore.

Microsoft has the infrastructure and know how to potentially dominate Sony over Cloud gaming. I like being able to stream games myself. Will PlayStation exclusives be enough?

This is going to be an exciting year for gaming enthusiasts as the console generation is all set for a change with the likes of Sony and Microsoft coming out with their latest hardware. Both companies have already given gamers a good idea about what to expect from the next PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X this year. But don't be surprised to see Sony shoot itself in the foot with the PS5 this time around. The Japanese giant could end up ceding its gaming supremacy to not just the Microsoft Xbox Series X, but to other deep-pocketed rivals as well that could force it to bring an end to the PlayStation line.

As of right now the public response point overwhelmingly to 'YES'. As I mentioned in the other thread the problem with Cloud Infrastructure is the fact that no.1 market - the US - has terrible Internet coverage with data caps. You cannot have any meaningful cloud implementation with that.

These kind of American reporters clearly not biased for the American company report the death of the Japanese competitor and the death of the console market every generation for the last 20 or so years... at some point they will be right of course, but for now they keep their writing article quota up with "quality" content :rolleyes:.

Local hardware will never be obsolete until the entire world has cheap gigabit low latency broadband. No one is going to give up on emerging markets and huge markets like the USA with shocking broadband infrastructure.

Even then, local hardware will still be available just like CDs, LPs and their respective players are still sold.

Could local hardware become more niche in say 40 years time? Maybe, but not to a huge extent.

Same doom and gloom last gen as well, the people that spout this shit think they're visionaries but really they just don't have a scooby.
 
Remember when we had the same articles telling us the PS4 and XO were the last consoles that will ever be made?

Or before that when the PS3, 360 and Wii were?

It wouldn't be a new console generation without the traditional 'consoles are doomed!' fear mongering from journalists.

I almost wonder if they have a mad libs like template for these articles, with gaps left for the console or generation and the reason they definitely will stop being desirable products this time.

I see a nice amount of pro PS5 on the front page today, "PS5 the last console produced, Sony not a competitor" "PS5 good for now, but XSX clearly the best choice for the future" "XSX's being the home for FPS (its trump card)" etc... :LOL:.
 
At the best can be the last generation with the optical drive, but i doubt even on that. An eventual PS6 is still sure to come, and probably, there will still be an option with the optical drive, or some sort of drive. The treat of cloud gaming is just a wet dream of some people who want to speculate on it, nothing more. Compressed video/audio, input lag, and all other sort of limitation and disadvantages will never let that trash take place.
 
Funny how it says that Microsoft dominates Sony when it comes to cloud gaming. Sony dominates Microsoft when it comes to games themselves. I wonder what players, who buy these consoles, really care about.....
One of those bullshit articles you see with every new generation launch.

Game pass is cool, but if that was only based on streaming the games, I would instantly stop my subscription

I realize the article was published almost a year ago, but it's pretty interesting how spectacularly wrong the author was. From the projected expense of a PS5, Stadia, and cloud gaming in general. The price for a PS5 is reasonable and it's so sought after that many of us can't even buy one. The amount of times the author says things like death, end of, last of, etc of the PlayStation line is pretty telling.

I thought the same last generation. I genuinely believed that streaming was going to become the new norm, even though I've never had much success with it.

However, when you look at it, the numbers just don't add up. Look at the sheer hype surrounding console launches, and the clear definition of a new generation that they mark. The new Playstation and Xbox models sold out day one, and still aren't back in stock. For these companies, putting out a new console is a huge marketing opportunity. They won't get the same effect updating an app that lives on a TV or phone.
 
We get this same old song and dance every generation and it's never true. I can just see the hype for the PS6 console already :)

If you think the whole world will have gigabit, low latency, affordable, no data cap broadband within 5 years then I don't really know what to say. I think we'd struggle to reach that point within 50 years.
 
Sony is a very small fish when compared to Microsoft. Most of Sony's businesses are falling, these days the PlayStation brand is their biggest earner, I expect the mobile division to go under next.
 
I hope the next gen consoles (PS6 etc) will be the last, because I can't keep up with so many great games.

I do believe that streaming is the future. That being said, this is not coming anytime soon. Also, why wouldn't future Sony just rent/buy the cloud infrastructure from someone else and continue dominating on the software side? Amazon/Google/etc surely wouldn't say no to Sony money. They are already doing business with Microsoft, no?
 
The Playstation 5 will be the last Sony console with a built-in optical drive ever produced, that is a more likely prediction.

At this point I'd be very surprised if anyone puts any stock in to these.

Like really guys. You'll see this same shit in a few years when PS6 is out.
 
Given the size and importance of the PlayStation brand to Sony,I'm sure they will do what it takes to keep themselves very relevant in the gaming market.....I would imagine that will include future consoles.
 
Consoles will always be around but they will no longer be relevant (IMO they are already getting pretty irrelevant)

If the move to cloud gaming was happening twenty years ago I'd be having a fit but now? modern games are mostly meh microwavable/disposable experiences so whatever

The whole world isn't the target audience. They just need the top 50% of urban areas in the world, which would be something like 3 billion people.

The biggest cloud gaming, audio and movie streaming companies are from the US, there is nobody standing at the side waiting for US to sort out those issues, things will keep on moving rapidly forward no matter what.
 
Nah. The majority of the world doesn't have access to internet fast enough to allow for streaming as a viable alternative. That's not going to change for the next ten years, at a minimum. Ok, but, you solve that problem - then you smash head-first into the speed of light problem. We're not close on that one. Work around it with advanced prediction tech, and sure, you might be able to make a case, but that means your twenty years away. For context, that's the entire life of the Xbox brand to date.

Local computer has too many advantages, and too few downsides, to disappear in the next seven years. Besides, Sony have already made the PS9 - they've still got four consoles to go.

Same points i brought up before.

A new tide will push out the older tide. It is inevitable the bigger fishes will eat up Sony's pie, just like how Sony pushed out Sega and Nintendo.
And when you have old Jimbo at the reign, it is quite scary imo. Can Jim switch as fast as Nintendo and be contented with a smaller pie and a different type of PS? 🤷‍♀️

Microsoft and Sony are both targeting emerging markets like India and South America as they have the largest growth opportunities. There's no chance they completely concede Australia and America, large swathes of which have shit infrastructure.
