Like I mentioned in a post earlier, what's the sense in adults getting angry over a message board? It's all just words hanging over a computer monitor. In 80 years, it wont matter.

What purpose is there to ask if she goes around and debates those points to other? There is none. He wanted to throw a barb to show that she isn't willing to stand up with her views in a public setting because she would be countered so easily.

If you don't care then that's on you but the only people who seem to have a problem with that particular case seem to have dubious posting histories where they strongly distaste being banned for just being in disagreement. In reality, those cases are super fucking rare because they almost never happened. Articulate your position without being hateful and you will have zero problems.

I don't care what your religion is [or anything else], I only care about our interactions. I believe in being kind. I believe in personal responsibility, though that doesn't mean I believe people shouldn't work together to help everyone. I believe in open borders [heck, I don't even like the concept of borders]. I got banned once for pointing out that a moderator just heavily insulted millions of Americans (all Trump voters). I'm European and never even had a dog in the race.
I also got banned when I argued that not all the people that celebrate with Zwarte Piet, especially the children, are racist scum that deserve to be hated (I'm not Dutch). I also still have a screenshot of the ban message which read: "sorry the blacks ruined your good times". Like, what did that even mean? Pretty sure there were also countless insults thrown against me.

I didn't argue in favor (I believe I even made that clear in the thread several times and you just did what they did). I argued against showering everybody that celebrates with him with hate, including children. My argument was that if they don't know something is racist, and there is no bad intention (which is what should count) at all, why all the hate on them? Pretty sure I also said there should be discussions instead of blind hate. Too bad the thread is currently on the hidden side, so I can't look it up. But it went like this for like 2-3 pages.

Also, they can't be about how she took clips from other games, how she didn't play those games, or how she used all that moneeeey to make just those videos. Counter her arguments she made. I've been on (Neo)Gaf since '99. Don't post as much anymore, because life happened, but I still check it almost daily. It was always a good source of news and tips on popular media.

I feel like the events of the last few days could only have happened to Evilore. More than anything else, social ineptness caused all of this. I'd say that outside the revenge porn (which is definitely criminal in some countries), the things he is accused of aren't even that serious, but his aggressive defending or even bragging about of these types of situations made him look extremely bad.

The pitchfork hive mind cultivated here under Evilore's watch made sure everything came crashing down extra hard. Many of the mods also deserve some blame here, this place has been deteriorating for years now. I've long since avoided certain discussions because people weren't interested in other points of view and would rather accuse you of heinous crimes until you left the thread and/or were banned. That sucked and made this place lose a lot of it's appeal to me, but it still had some worth.

Kinda funny, the only thread I started these last few years was the Dutch Election OT. As far as I could tell, there were no incidents in those 27 pages even though both left and *gasp* right wing people visited it. So let's not pretend it's impossible to have a civilized discussion about politics on the internet.



I missed this initially, but it still pisses me off. Iapetus has always been one of the best posters in this place, intelligent and polite.

It's not impossible but even in the short 4 years I've been posting here even I noticed a significant change in OT and the Moderators having an "I'm better than you" attitude and if you disagree with what I'm saying you're automatically a racist, sexist, misogynist. Lots (definitely not the majority) of people in OT became exactly what this video talks about and pushed people away from this website entirely. It hurt that they were also some of the most active members where a lot of their so called "discussion" was just hoping in a thread and saying "fuck trump" or something along those lines. Those people basically became what this video talks about.

The moderation and community is what made GAF what it was. To say otherwise is to be living in lala land. This isn't to say that they were perfect either but this forum was incredible heavily curated and allowed for a lot of discourse that was drowned out in other more "open" sites. How many times did we see women, minorities of all sorts and many other voices who don't always get heard thank and appreciate this site and the community it built up.

Not only that but GAF was one of the few sites where put up or shut up was actually enforced. You make some bold grandiose or ugly claim then you better back it up and whining about people dog piling you or doubling down isn't that. I'm as inflammatory as anyone can get on this site but somehow I lasted when so many others didn't. Wonder how that works?

Yeah I can relate. I can get pretty heated about things I care about too. To the point that I become downright a horrible asshole and it usually takes after the fact for me to realize. I've probably done so in this thread but I have a lot of frustrations with this site and what's been going on and it's manifesting itself like that.

I think our criminal system is antiquated and broken, with a fair amount of racism baked in [coke vs crack, etc]. I think prisons themselves create more problems than they solve and that we need to find a better solution than breaking up families. I've supported some sort of universal basic income solution for decades before it became hip, though I recognize there are significant economic issues that would need to be resolved and it's not a simple solution. I think both major parties in the US are anti-people and pro-big business. I think my taxes support murder overseas, and it pains me to pay them. I don't care what your religion is [or anything else], I only care about our interactions. I believe in being kind. I believe in personal responsibility, though that doesn't mean I believe people shouldn't work together to help everyone. I believe in open borders [heck, I don't even like the concept of borders]. I don't care where you were born, or what language you speak. If I see someone in trouble, I will try to help them. I've been part of cooperatives, I try to shop local [except gaming], I am anti-violence and anti-war. I love cats.

No. I've been fighting the fight for decades. Longer than people in their twenties have been alive. But that doesn't mean I support the culture of accusation you clearly participate in.

You assume the worst. Oh, he's defending free speech? What awful things do you want to say? The only awful thing I want to say is that your style of attack is gross.

Discussion is important. Discussion allows me to talk about things important to me, like the problem with our prison systems. But what people do here is try to shut others down with accusations, subtle and not-so-subtle, just like you did. That's ugly. That doesn't encourage growth and debate, it shuts it down.

It helped push me to become more politically active, I joined the Dutch GreenLeft party because I felt like I needed to contribute. Fortunately Dutch politics is not totally polarized like in the US and GB. We have our own "deplorables", but there's still hope.

I didn't kick up a big fuss about it, didn't quit the site for one of the anti-NeoGAF sites out there (though I will be taking a look at some of the new sites currently spawning), and despite being possibly the person with the best one-line response possible in a thread like this, didn't use it.
