The Turok trademark is dead

Is it just me or is Turok 2 quite hard?

Pretty cool game but every time I play it I can only make slow progress

This is my memory of Turok 1 and 2. I was 11-12 when they came out. I just remember killing a couple dinosaurs and then I was like, "What the fuck am I supposed to do now" ? I would walk around in circles for a while, then I just said Fuck it ! And rage/boredom quit.

I wonder how it would be now that I'm older and have more gaming experience ?

He was wearing stuff like a headband which natives have never worn. It's a product of Hollywood misrepresentation.

I don't mind having Turok wear period outfits; the devs should simply make sure it's an actual historical outfit by doing a modicum of research.

That's one hell of a leap you did there.

You started the bullshit.

In case this comes up again, even the developers themselves said they designed the character in a way to avoid stereotypes and being offensive. There was an interview between a dev and an outlet, that I can't find at the moment, during which the dev said something to the effect of "we're trying to get past the stereotype of the savage indian with a bandana and feathers". I did find this bit with IGN, though:

IGN: Turok also seems to have changed his appearance quite a lot, do you think you've finally settled on how he should look?

Josh Holmes: We went through a lot of different versions of Turok and we modelled many different versions. It was important for us to create a hero, but a hero that gamers could see themselves playing as. It's no good having him as some kind of superhero because no one would relate to him. We also wanted him to have a Native American background - just like the original character - but not make him a negative stereotype because that would be offensive.

Maybe Bish could chime in on the work that went into the character design.

I never said people were racist for liking the character. What the fuck are you even talking about ?

Look. You brought the fud and racist card bullshit into this thread. You and you alone.
It was not needed. No one wanted it. We just wanted to talk about our love of the game and the feeling we got as we ran heroically into thick fog dressed like a native indian chasing down dinosaurs with amazing tribal drums bouncing across the room.

I can just imagine Polygon's review if the original Turok was released today.

"The game is great, but I am extremely offended by the interpretation of Native Americans.

6.0/10"

It sounds like it was tastefully done, but we are all aware the depths Gies and company are willing to sink to for clicks.

I also remember the Native American interpretation in Prey to be fairly tasteful. I could be extremely mistaken as I haven't played that title since release.

Your average Joe is going to identify more with the Hollywood identity than the historical reality.

Well boo-fucking-hoo.

Time for Nintendo to pick it up.... Turok was a big franchise during the N64 days... would be cool if they were able to resurrect it for their next console.

Get Retro Studios to work on it... It would be dope.

...

I can actually see Warner Bros picking it up though

this and shadow man were the greats of nintendo 64

Akklaim (sp?) were a great gaming company from those days and much further back as well (i can remember them doing games for the Amstrad CPC464!).
Its such a shame them and so many of the great studios from the golden age of gaming (16bit/32bit) don't exist anymore.

I have no interest in a new Turok -game, so this isn't a tragedy to me. With that said, though, I do have fond memories of playing Turok on the N64. I anticipated the sequel like crazy, and cried when it corrupted my memory pak. I never finished the game.

I still haven't played the full Turok reboot game; only the demo. And I still haven't beaten any of the original games. The first game in particular had some fucked up level design that made it very difficult to find your way. I got stuck on one level and never got past it.

I really like the games, though. I will have to play the reboot eventually. It seemed awesome.

Just you wait. Bethesda wants to hit it big with Prey 2.

I too enjoyed the representation in Prey. It was an enjoyable experience. The way it set itself up was good at the time. I haven't played it since 2006. It's been quite a while.

Turok 1 and 2 were my most anticipated games at the time. Never beat either of them except part 1 with cheat codes. Never played 3, but I did have Evolution on the GameCube. Was the 2008 game any good?

Finishing Turok 2 literally destroyed my interest in FPS games for a few years. It was a fantastic game, but the levels were so fucking huge and the save points were so fucking rare, it was a soul crushing Herculean task of a game. Maybe it was a coincidence with natural FPS burn-out since I had basically played almost every single one that came down the pike after Doom, on PC, Mac and consoles, but after Turok 2 I just didn't want to play FPSs anymore. When I bought an Xbox in spring 2002 the clerk assumed I wanted a copy of Halo with it and he literally thought I was joking when I said no. He said I was the first person he'd ever sold an Xbox to without a copy of Halo to go with it. I said "I'm just not into FPSs any more." "Well you should at least check it out sometime anyway." I did, and Halo turned out to be the little game that taught me how to love again.

Most people point to Goldeneye. I always point to Turok.

And they don't listen do they? I had both back in the day and all my mates wanted to play was bloody Goldeneye. I guess Turok was a bit brutal for most people, plus that Bond licence...

Surprised no mention of the Alien weapon, still my favourite weapon all these years later.

It isn't about getting people to listen or change their mind. It's only about my personal views on "the first console FPS that got it right." Whether anyone agrees or not means fuck all to me.

The levels were so huge. I remember using the cheats to jump around to go to different stages.

I beat a few stages in Turok 1. I think I may have got to the second stage in Turok 2.

Crikey, curb the aggression fella. Turok was generally unloved by the masses, I think that's the point we're agreeing on here.

I played Turok2 on my import US N64 with memory pack. Lord the framerate was bad. I've got no idea how I completed it back in the day. I could barely play. Continually overshooting my direction and targets. Ha ha.

I used to love both games as a kid. Didn't really get very far but it was fun.
I'd be cool with a remake or a reboot.
There were 4 games on the N64. Rage Wars was the best of them.

Rage Wars has a great multiplayer mode where you can change a lot of settings such as gravity, speed and much more. It also has some interesting modes such as one person being a small, very fast monkey the other players have to chase after.

I'm going to have to track down a PC copy since it's not available digitally -- and get it working. Trip down memory lane. Bad news for the game series :(

You should be able to run it okay. But there will be some graphical hiccups. The big problem is the music on the cd doesn't play.

Oh, and the mouselook is putrid on the 2nd. I don't remember if the first even supported it.
