The Turok trademark is dead

I'll always have hope and stand proud in front of my Turok collection. Someday someone will convince somebody that their idea will work and I'll embrace it on release day with tears of glory.

Long live the essence of Turok!

This. Sit your ass down, dino riders!

Hey bish,

What were you doing during Turok's development? You were around only during the last gen title, right? (And the last Turok ever, so far. D:)

I've been wondering about it since I first read about it on GAF, but now seems like a good time and thread to ask. :P

If you're not at ease sharing about it it's alright though, I'm just curious to know more about the man behind the avatar...and GIFs. (No, no...not Sam L. Jackson)

Seemed to me it was pretty well loved by N64 owners. It just wasn't as popular as Goldeneye.

Fair enough if that's your experience. I remember many complaints about difficulty spikes and jumping sections at the time. Game could be quite impenetrable to the average N64 owner.

I just looked up Turok sales and it's further down the list than I expected:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_64_video_games

About 7 times less popular than Goldeneye actually ;)

You should be able to run it okay. But there will be some graphical hiccups. The big problem is the music on the cd doesn't play.

Oh, and the mouselook is putrid on the 2nd. I don't remember if the first even supported it.

I don't like the sound of that. I'll have to look into it some more before I make a purchase. I could always get the N64 game and then play it on Project64 if there is no possible fix.

Yo Bish. Still waiting for that missing grass in Turok PS3.

address all complaints to that brick wall behind you :P

Senior designer and associate director. Creature AI, weapon balancing, marketing and other stuff. The stuff we had up and running in pre-production for the sequel would have blown your mind. Still sad about the whole thing, but working at Propaganda was a blessing.

One day I'll grab some of the old crew and do a Twitch Let's Play where we get drunk and tell stories about the game's development. Waaaay down the road, though.

Wow, this makes the fact that a sequel never saw the light of day even sadder. I love the Turok series since the first one. :(

Please be kind enough to create a thread when you'll do that LP, I'd like to hear more from you guys, even if this event is not coming soon, I'll make sure to still be on GAF until then. :P

I hope that happens sometime.

I love the idea of a dinosaur based shooter but I don't especially care for turok or the story of those games.

I think there's a good opportunity for someone to take the monster hunter or destiny style coop gameplay and apply it to large "real" or fictional dinosaurs.

I'm not familiar with trademark law, but does this mean that anyone could register Class 9 trademark on the name 'Turok' and make a Turok FPS? There's no legal ramifications to using an abandoned trademark?

(Of course, the franchise's comic roots make this less straightforward than if we were discussing an abandoned trademark for a game that merely originated as a videogame).

The only legal way to make a video game with the Turok name, would be to have it so radically different than the comic IP that it wouldn't be Turok.

As in, you could, say, make a puzzle video game, call it Turok and register that as a TM.

But a dino hunting game? Not happening.

After playing Far Cry 3 I thought it would be really cool to have a Turok game set in a similar style. Have an island filled with Dinosaurs and bad guys and Turok goes full open world with all his fancy guns.

This man seriously needs to play Blood Dragon. STAT.

Wasn't there a previous Turok developer (or someone related to the game) trying to do a new sequel or a spiritual successor to Turok last year?

Edit:
Probably was bishoptl like I can see in previous post.

First two games are great (and Turok 2 still holds up), Rage Wars was fun, the third game was decent. Turok Evolution overall was pretty darn awful, but the multiplayer was actually super fun for some reason. Something about the mechanics made it hilarious.

Turok 2008 was pointless and stupid.

I would love for Nintendo to get the licence and give it to Retro, it's a series I think most associate with the N64 over other platforms and I dunno it just feels right for the series should it ever come back to do so with Nintendo

Oh man, Retro would do such great justice to the atmosphere in the first two games.

Would be a dream come true.

This is just a little bit devastating. When everyone was raving about Goldeneye, I had my copy of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. I don't think I ever got past the second area without cheats as a kid, but I loved the comic book that came with it.

Just found out about this, sooo depressing.
I've always liked Turok, and i did dig the 2008 game as well (ridiculously underrated FPS as far as i'm concerned), so it really saddens me to see the franchise ending like this: the potential is surely there, and fuck Graham Hopper for canning the sequel with spiked dinosaurs. D:
And Bish, please do that behind the scenes talk someday!

I miss the Turok franchise. Wish that the 2 N64 games would come to Wii U VC.. Though not like it matters currently with lack of Wii U N64 VC..

Threads like these can only make this dino fan sigh....

"Sigh..."

(Loved the first two games on N64. They might have been my most canonical and loved FPS games within the genre at that point in my gaming life, save for the old Doom games and a few others on PC like Hexen and Heretic.)

So sad. Dinosaurs used to show such promise in video games, now all we get is zombies.

Hopefully someone buys this up and makes a far cry style game but surviving on an island full of dinosaurs (so basically JP Trespasser that is actually good).

Still have good memories from the N64 days. The 360 era version was okay.

I would kill for a Turok + Far Cry-ish combo.
Just running around an open world while having to watch out for/kill dinosaurs.

I'm one of the weirdos who really liked the 2008 game, esp. playing with a mouse and keyboard.

I'm with you. Environments were cool, the melee was absolutely brutal, but it felt like there was some missed potential. I never got used to the feel of the "weight" of movement.

Still, didn't want to see the franchise go away.
