I couldn't care less about this but...

The creator's wishes are irrelevant. All of the different entities exist in the same universe and are thus perfectly open to comparison. Just because he originated or authorized the changes doesn't make them beyond questioning.

Again, this little tidbit isn't important, but the whole excuse that people can't question the changes in the film just because Adams wrote the screenplay is just dumb.

Obviously you can question the changes. However it just makes the people sweating the small stuff (like being tied to chairs vs. stones) look stupid (well more stupid than they usually look in these situations).

Nor did I ever claim that was what you said.
Now while Bish was obviously fucking around, that kind of statement raises a point. Its a common thought that book to movie translations are poor because they often fail to capture certain points the author had or intended. But since this case the screen writer and the original author of the books are one and the same, it changes things slightly.

I don't want to see an exact retelling of any book or comic or video game onscreen.

Why? Because I already read the goddamn book and comic and I already played the video game.

And said game or book or whatever was perfectly suited to its original format -- perfectly reflecting the author's fantastic understanding and control of his or her chosen medium.

From that initial experience on out its all interpretation. Like cover songs. People riffing on the ideas, expanding and contracting and making it their own.

I know someday they'll invent a computer program that will perfectly replicate a book into an obnoxious, perfectly detailed 90-hour-long cut scene that leaves no titbit unwanked. Until that sad day live with the fact that you'll never see the movie that you saw in your head.

Too bad that the book wasn't the original source material.

The book was based on the BBC Radio drama (broadcast on Public Broadcast Radio in the US). Also, if you are a big Hitchhiker's fan, you'd know that every version of the story changes slightly whether it was Radio, Book, Videogame, Graphic Novel, Television Show or the Movie.

Plus, Douglas Adams had a huge hand in the screenplay before he died and the Directors are huge fans that pay homage to the original source material (hence the BBC TV Marvin making a cameo).

I have great faith in the film.

I really love the design of this movie. Very Red dwarf, Dark Crystal feel. The only way it could possible be better is if Terry Gilliam was the director. And he's back to making films with Brother Grimm in 2005 and Tideland in 2006, so it's all good.

Yeah it's a weird comedy. And you should read the book...it's really short and it's a fast read.

Eh, remove the comedy and it's as much of a deep-space sci-fi adventure story as any other. But with comedy. Just like 'Mom and Dad Save the World' with Jon Lovitz!

I've been trying to convince myself that doing so would just about be the dorkiest thing ever.

Also, I can't say I really had any picture of the Vogons in mind for some reason. Yet, at the same time, they don't look quite how I expected. Marvin, though, I always pictured as very tall. Like 7 feet tall, with noticably poor posture making him appear much shorter. And thin.

Pretty much the opposite of what he is here. But I absolutely love the design they went with in the movie.
