But here's the problem: expectations are constantly being revised and still they're not being met.

Or maybe Ninty needs to get the DS success out of their heads and start putting down some basic expectations. It's like they're overanxious to get to those insane sales.

It will print money Ninty...in time.

Uh... expectations for the 3DS are far from outlandish. I'd say they're more on the conservative side, even.

Nintendo just recently said that the 3DS should be selling a lot better in the west than it is.

Better does not mean doing bad. Bill Bellchick calls out Tom Brady all the time saying he needs to play better.

Bottom line is it is too early to tell either way right now. When LM2, NSMB2, ONI Training, and Animal Crossing all come out this year along with better western support, and the 3DS is still trending similar in the Western market, then yes I agree Nintendo needs to be worried.

Aside from the consideration that show floor units will most likely be some sort of QA/debug units (be that by firmware alone), devs had the ability to run entirely off SD around E3 time last year. If nintendo removed that (which they might), that'd be a tad dickish in my book.

They've probably given devs the option to burn it to a blu ray writable as well, if I were to guess. Most devs would likely prefer to load it onto USB or SD before they burn a disc, though. BDR is slow and cumbersome compared to a decent SD card.

I'd say 3/4 Wii U, and 1/4 3DS. Sounds fair, and if they have that western support they were going on about, it'll be a good catalyst for the rest of this year in addition to the momentous Wii U info drop.

I'm sure they'll want to go into further detail about the DD initiative, although perhaps that'll be done at a later date.

Also, fucking roundtables, guys! :D

This is the thing they said has concerned them and the reason why they believe sales have been lagging. At the moment there is no quality western support. Unlike Japan where Japanese support is solid and helping drive sales even more. The best selling games now for the system everywhere are from Japan. That is where games keep being announced. The lag between them coming out there and maybe making their way out of Japan is to long. No western support to fill that gap will hurt sales. This is what is suppose to be addressed come E3. There is no way the 3DS can't be a big part of the presentation.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
This 3DS talk is off-topic.

Please, lets get back to Wii U chatter.

Fifteen to twenty minutes of 3DS. Anything below that isn't acceptable. I'm not budging on this.

You're absolutely 100% right on this.

I realise people are starved for Wii U info, and want to see as much of it as possible, but Nintendo are total fools if they think they can just leave 3DS to its own devices and have it turn into a megabeast all by itself. It needs high-profile new game announcements, and hype-inducing media for already announced games. I don't doubt it will have less time given to it than last year, but bringing the heavyweights to the 3DS is as important as bringing them to WiiU, IMO.

You bring up a good point.

Wii would not have made a very good DVD player even if they'd enabled it, no dedicated DSP to handle AC3 / Dolby / DTS, no optical out, limited video options, and the drive was designed to be backwards compatible with the Gamecube's miniCAV discs which probably entailed certain customisations. Even homebrew which is designed to enable the drive to play DVDs doesn't quite get it working right, and I have to wonder if that is because of instruction sets that the drive was configured to understand or something - perhaps they never really planned for the possibility.

The Wii-U disc format is reported to use a variant of the China Blue High-def DVD format, so its blue-laser tech, but not necessarily blu-ray. That probably means we won't see blue ray playback, but if they got Panasonic to deliver a drive in a forward thinking way, it could have the instruction sets needed to change laser colour/attenuation, and enable reading of said discs. The U will have opitcal output via the HDMI port this time, and a DSP that could be used for processing audio and video, so it is potentially a much more capable console in this regard if they ever choose to put out an add-on or software upgrade.

I don't think they will, but it would be a nice surprise if the hardware is capable and they choose to do it someday... it doesn't personally bother me if they do or they don't. Blu-Ray players are cheap these days, and I'm betting a lot of people who care about it have PS3s. Between all the licenses that would need to be signed, its omission might end up saving us $20-40+ on a system.

Holy Sh*t could you imagine displaying a Blu Ray on the TV, the uPAd or BOTH at the same time? Family want to continue to watch the Movie but you have to drop a big one? Just take the Tablet with you to the crapper! Or watch a Blu Ray while being in bed, on the deck/veranda/balcony...

Would be cool...

True, but I was just pointing this out when it comes to how they should use their E3 time. They will use this opportunity to promote the 3DS more.
And don't forget the Wii is still there.

It's the burden of being a publicly-held company. Every year you have to grow. Every year you have to outdo what you did the year before. Growth obsession. It's the only thing shareholders care about.

Agreed. And that's why I believe 20-25 minutes will be used for 3DS. I think they will put an emphasis on the 3DS Pokemon apps releasing alongside B&W 2, then briefly highlighting NSMB2, Animal Crossing, and Oni Training along with a sizzle reel for other first party support. Then a huge focus (10 mins+) on third party games like Lego City Stories 3DS, Epic Mickey 3DS, Kingdom Hearts, Mirror of Fate, Ex Troopers, PW V.S. Layton, and western third party surprises being (guessing here) COD 3DS and others.

As for time allotment, I see it like this:
3DS/B&W2: 20-25 minutes
Kirby anniversary and collection/Wii: 5 minutes
Wii-U: 30-35 minutes

Would you say leaked though?
A lot of it seems to be done on purpose.
Well you know what I meant. I understand that several games get announced before the pressers, because some titles will be lost in the onslaught of announcements. Still, you'd think a game like Gears of War "4" would be held back until it's E3 showing. Well that's what I would do.

Yeah, Gears, God of War, PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale.. all seem like games that would have been front and center at e3.. No need to announce ahead of time

Wouldn't be surprised if they left a lot of 3DS talk to their end of the year showings like they did last year.

Well Iwata said they would address western third party support at E3, and considered they probably are a bit concerned with recent trends in the Western market, I disagree with you here. Like I said above, I expect 20-25 minutes of the conference to be saved for 3DS information.

Edit: basically what I'm saying is that I personally would be surprised if that happened.

I'm slightly annoyed that the cutoff period for posting spoilers for the movie was apparently just after I created the thread. I had to go back and retrofit old video game footage into the "that's my secret" meme (that's in the first picture of this thread). :|
lol I just noticed that gif now for some reason, not as funny as the pic!

Whatever order they do their conference in wouldn't surprise me, but I could see them spending ~20 min on the 3DS, end it with talking about Lego City Stories and then seque into Wii U with it. I wouldn't rate it likely of course. I think about the only thing that would surprise me is if they spend more time on the 3DS than the Wii U.

Looks like the WiiU Facebook page posted a pic of Reggie with the console and the controller. Can't access the FB page right now, but can someone post the image? Is he holding the revised controller with the analog sticks?

Yeah I just saw that. :p

So anybody actually thinking that they might scratch off at least one game on their Facebook before the actual conference?

I could potentially see them doing one on Monday to steal some thunder away from Microsoft/Sony.

if it's some bullshit game then yeah but I think we're so close that they'll just save the big guns for the show.

It's a HUGE show for Nintendo. They have to totally flip perceptions, convince people to buy it at launch, and not do anything silly. Tall task.

And I firmly believe that those titles should be showcased during their conference. Given the visibility that E3 provides, I'd consider it a huge missed opportunity if they didn't (especially when considering the 3DS' current situation).

Once again, I'm not against the Wii U having a more significant presence. But I don't agree that it should be overshadowing the 3DS to the degree certain people seem to be suggesting.

But it's going to be overshadowed by the Wii U no matter how much time they spend on it. That's what the media are coming to see, and that's what's going to dominate coverage from the show. Of course they should show a video of NSMB2, show off a few short clips of LM2, Paper Mario, etc, and a couple of new games, but there's literally zero benefit to spending any significant time on those titles. Just do quick reveals, and then go into more detail in a Nintendo Direct a few weeks later when the Wii U isn't dominating the media's attention.

Aside from the consideration that show floor units will most likely be some sort of QA/debug units (be that by firmware alone), devs had the ability to run entirely off SD around E3 time last year. If nintendo removed that (which they might), that'd be a tad dickish in my book.

Yeah, it's pretty stange. I'm guessing that whatever copyright protection they've got on the hardware they're using at E3 (which wouldn't have been in the early kits they used last year), precludes developer-signed software running off anything other than the Blu-Ray drive.

Based on Amazon seemingly halting 3DS sales in NA and Japan, recent price drops of DSi XL and stuff, I think a new 3DS redesign may actually be coming at E3 possibly. I didn't think they would as I thought it was too early but maybe they feel the need to launch the new one if they do feel they need to push territories outside of Japan. Iwata's talks about lots of Western Support announcing at E3 possibly means a redesign with the second circle pad for western games.

I can easily see them taking 20-25 minutes on 3DS if this is true. Probably also why they are pimping the additional coverages this year more than ever as there just isn't going to be enough time at their conference for everything.

What is the highest point in LA? $10 says Yamauchi is overlooking from it, hands clasped, maybe stroking a cat in his lap.

We talk about Shiggy and Iwata and Reggie, but deep down we know who the real master is.

Amazon hasn't been selling the 3DS itself in months (this entire year I believe). You can't use that as a sign of anything. The situation with Amazon.com is weird since other versions of the store sell it directly. Other stores brick and online constantly get new stock as well.

I thought how they handled 3DS games last year was perfect. Pick a handful to highlight - short trailers about the game - done.

I am fine with 20 minutes of 3DS stuff, wrapped around lots of awesome Wii U goodness.

--

Also, the 3DS has outsold the DS so far, but will have to see sales skyrocket to match what DS did in the years after its first on sale. So they do need to keep pushing it.

Well Nintendo threw WiimotionPlus out of left field on a Monday before E3 a few years ago, so they have done something similar before. Personally I'm still holding on to the possibility of a Vitality Sensor/Biometric Feedback revivial announcement on Monday. A man can dream. :)

The real question is: how much time will they dedicate to Wii and DS?

I predicted 5 minutes on Kirby collection & Anniversary along with what else they have in store for Wii, though I could see them saving this for a media release right after their conference and having zero Wii.

DS will have B&W2 but I believe they will talk up the 3DS apps releasing alongside it and play up playing it on the 3DS while faintly mentioning it is a DS title. I imagine they will mention Conquest as well, though it will most likely be grouped in with B&W2 talk. 5 minutes as well I imagine, but again they could save this for a media release after.

I'm going to hold out crazy hope for a redesign. That would be a real kick in the pants going along with a console launch. A complete refresh.
