This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Why do games target ether 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second.

why dont we ever see games targeting 40 fps or 50 fps?
Because the games want to be synchronized with the display's vertical refresh rate, which, at least going by US standards, used to be at 29.97Hz (NTSC-M). So most monitors adopted a 60Hz refresh rate (gels well with 30Hz, which roughly is 29.97Hz, so it's good enough) among other rates like 72Hz and 50Hz; most TVs adopted 60Hz for the same reason (you want to be able to display a 30Hz signal without tearing on those, and that's what comes through the air / on DVDs).

Or something close to that.

Did the gamecube had hidden firmware updates in their games?I remember the day I got bloody roar, i could hear the whole loading jingle, but later down the line, the load time was shorter and the jingle would get cut off.

Don't know if it the right thread or that I should make one but here it goes

I'm studying software engineering and would love to have a job in the gaming industry, or movie industry. So does anyone know what specific jobs a Software engineer has in the process of game development? What areas are there and what sort of knowledge and preparation they ask?

Also another website/forum where I can take this too? And get really in-depth. I'd really love to work in gaming I just want to know how to prepare myself , me going to be an engineer.

Something like that.

...but what would count as a game that runs at 60FPS? SSF4, MvC3, Castlevania, for example, are these 60 FPS?
Mind you the closest I got to 60 FPS is the movie cutscenes in KOEI games, those always run at 60 FPS when I view them O_o
Games that a programmed to run at 60FPS...

Im not sure how you are able to "get" close to 60 FPS, im not really sure what exactly you are saying here besides you know nothing about the subject of frame rates...

There are a lot of factors that play into what you see, which is the finished product of all of these factors. Some games are framelocked, some are not. Hence why some games look smooth then look like crap the next second when a lot is going on in game.

Try wiki searching visible frame rate and frame rate in video games.

I want to buy PSN Cards off of Amazon, the catch? I live in Canada, when I go to Amazon.com, I can proceed all the way to the page before the checkout, everything seems to be fine and dandy until then, price for $50 card is exactly $50 US and it even clearly states that the code will be sent to you via email, and you're good to go...BUT!

before hitting checkout I get "Just a reminder this PSN code will ONLY work for PSN accounts within the United States." Or something very similar to that..along those lines.

When I go to the Canadian Amazon, Amazon.ca I get this....

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002P3LP3Q/

CND$109.95 for a $50 PSN card??? Plus $4.99 Shipping What the fuck!?! it's basically a joke,

Can GAF Canada show me a safe and proper way to buy a PSN card online with a credit card?

Or can any Canadian PSN user at least confirm if buying the US PSN Cards from amazon.com work with their Canadian PSN accounts? I don't want to risk buying something for 50 bucks and having it not work!

Thanks in Advanced.

Can the Sega Vintage Collection games on PSN (Genesis games) be played on a PSP? It doesn't appear that I can do this, but I'm asking the stupid question here.

My 360 Slim has been restarting on its own for the past month or so. It mostly happens watching Netflix/Hulu and occasionally with games which is very frustrating.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem? I'm guessing it's something with the power supply.

Not really a stupid question, I just didn't know where else to put it. I googled it too, with no much success.

I'd honestly call Microsoft customer service for that, they'll probably be able to diagnose the problem a lot better than we can.

Yeah. I will here soon. Was just curious if anyone has had/heard of something similar.

I'm trying to remember the name of a PS2 game. It was about a black dude who could sort of hop from the realm of the Living to the realm of the Dead, or something like that. I also vaguely remember being able to leech people's souls from their body. The art design had a Southern voodoo vibe to it and it was third person.

Anyone?

I don't remember him being black, but maybe you're thinking about Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver?

Aren't you thinking of Shadow Man?

Nope, definitely wasn't Legacy of Kain. The protagonist was a rather average looking black guy in tattered clothes with dark voodoo powers. I almost want to say it was called...Deadman?

My slim xbox is freezing on startup. I haven't gotten the white dot yet, and it's not a complete freeze. It stops after the initial white xbox animation finishes, and sits on the white screen with the logo. The weird part is, the notifications that I'm online and that I can't connect to MSN messenger still pop up.

Is it dying? :<

Edit: Eventually got past it, and no further problems. The severe lag is a bit worrying, though. Must have took at least a minute to get to the conventional dash.

US PSN cards don't work on Canadian accounts. But why don't you just use your credit card to buy PSN games anyway? >_> You don't have to leave your CC info on your account afterwards if you're worried about Sony getting hacked again.

Yeah if you're going to use a credit card on Amazon, you might as well use it on PSN.

Heh! Actually I went ahead and did exactly that, added me $100 credits then removed my CC info. Just a paranoid bastard I am I guess.

So I picked up a PS3 and really want to go back and play Lunar Silver Star Story. Does the PS3 play original playstation games? Does it do well? Any issues I should be aware of?

The PS3 does indeed double as a PS1. I haven't had any problems playing my disc games on it, but hopefully more people chime in.

I just loaded up PS Home for the first time in about 2 years. Made my way into the Assassins Creed place and got into the secret area. I was immediately accosted by people dressed as Assassins to join their clan. They were actually referring to each other as 'brother'. If I am to join, I guess I need to buy the outfit for $4. The entire time this was happening I was laughing my ass off. Apparently one of them is the leader and told the other guy that he can't be friends with all recruits.

Apparently I have until tomorrow and they only ask once. Should I pony up the $4 for the outfit and see where this goes?

I'm thinking of going LTTP with Armored Core 4Answer this summer because it'll probably be another year or so before AC5 comes out. I was wondering, is it possible to design a logo on my computer and export it to Xbox360 or PS3 with a usb stick or something? Haven't played an AC game in ages in the old games on PSOne and PS2 you had to design shit in the in-game editor and that sucked. Would be much easier to just export something. But my googlfu is weak, couldn't really find anything about it online.

I'm playing Far Cry 2. Am I doing something wrong that I keep getting attacked by dudes in jeeps every 100 yards? I'm trying to get to the objective of my mission (convoy) but its taking forever cause I keep getting attacked and then I have to repair my car. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Welcome to Far Cry 2.

I found a beat up (yet complete) copy of Sega Fun Pack (shadow the hedgehog/sonic mega collection PS2.) I purchased it for 8 US dollars. I looked online and can only find brand new copies for 250 US dollars.

Two questions: Why is this so valuable? And mine being in "very used" condition, what would you value mine as? Thanks!

I just got Arkham Asylum GOTY and it is installing on my PS3. I have game saves and install data for the Vanilla version, but it is treating GOTY has a whole different game. Is this right? Shouldn't I have access to my old save data?

Doubt it, it was the same way on 360. Vanilla and GOTY have two different sets of achievements and are separate entries on your gamertag.

my 360 elite is acting up, and ive got a best buy service plan for it - last time, they let me switch up for another elite (with 2 free games! even refunded the difference since the price drop), was thinking about swapping for a new slim with a kinect, at least once something past Child of Eden comes out that id want for it. anyone have any experience with this kinda thing? i dont expect much grief, since they dont stock my model anyway (and i sure as shit am not gonna take a refurbished model from online anyway).

also, is it true the older memory cards dont work anymore? is there another way to move your account around (USB or otherwise)? one system is kept where internets cant reach, trying to make this work.

ps crap, its only got 4 GB of space? harsh.

I've been a 360 owner since launch, but have less experience with the system overall than on my PS3.

There was a video I downloaded from the Video Marketplace for free; if I understand this right, I have to log into Zune Marketplace every time I want to view videos that are sitting on my 360's HD or MU?

On my first attempt, the login failed, and I couldn't even launch the video from the Memory window. It worked the second time from within Zune though.

What is this shit? I must be missing something.

Game Library -> press right -> scroll down to Game Videos. No Zune sign in needed.

What is the most similar game to Fire Emblem available on Steam? I miss FE and shouldn't have sold my old games.
Judging from YouTube gameplay videos, I'd say that King's Bounty or Heroes of Might and Magic are the most similar. The first two or three X-Com series also have good turn-based strategy gameplay.
