So just what the hell is the R520 chip? I'm having a hard time understanding ATI's numbering system here.

I don't get it either but their 9xxx series had two different chipset designs (that I know of) bouncing around, so looking at the different cards sequentially wasn't necessarily the way to go. That may be what we are seeing here.

the R520 'Fudo' is ATI's last major overall of the R300 (Radeon 9700) architecture. it is completely different than the R500 for Xbox360.

R520 will have Shader Model 3.0 or *slightly* beyond 3.0, but not as advanced shader model wise as R500 in Xbox360. the R500 will be something like SM "3.5" or "3.8".

the R600 for PCs which is due out in 2006 or early 2007, will have all or most of the Xbox360 R500 graphics features, plus more. R600 will be SM4.0 and Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0
compliant.

in short, R520 is a super duper mega R300 pumped on steroids. (so was R420 / X800 but less so)

the R500 is a new architecture generation

Has it been confirmed that R500 in Xbox has 150M transistors? Will it's new architecture make it perform better than R520 even though that one (as far as I know) will have a lot more transistors?
