Tomb Raider |OT| Lara's Misfortune

I'm one of those who wouldn't mind a Tomb Raider with barely any enemies at all and tons of puzzles...but I'm still really enjoying this game, despite that fact. For what this is, I think it is quite good. The combat is not too difficult, and is satisfying. Overall I think I enjoy this game because of the way Lara controls. They've got real satisfying solid mechanics behind her movement and firing, and the world is still nice to explore. I'm hoping if they have success with this game, they can be a little more daring with the next one and bring back the Tomb in Tomb Raider.

I easily like this more than Uncharted 2, thus far, which is really great and along with Demon's Souls made the PS3 have a really amazing month in Oct 09 but in the future I hope if Uncharted continues it can span out a bit on the side. That's part of what makes TR more palatable to me along with the setting, it cuts a good balance for the kind of game it is.

Uncharted 2 works better as a kit for pure flash, but it's actual gameplay just isn't as good as this. The bits of freedom with the "wide linear" setup, and side bits and skill choices and just better combat, IMO, TR really works out to a more well rounded package.

So yeah, if Uncharted 4 happens I hope it isn't just straight line, one way, no choices to make, nothing on the side. Hoping Last of Us doesn't go right down that path, as well. They seem to have some good ideas with interactions and AI in that game, as well as actual design for a decent post-apoc game but if I can't stop and take a breather and poke around once in awhile it's going to be a bit sad.

Holy Hell!

I don't think this game does anything particularly unique. It's a cross of Uncharted with Far Cry 3, which an excellent thing. But despite it not being unique, it's just....fun...?

Graphics are incredible
Music is decent
Sounds add to the gameplay
Voice acting can be VERY hit or miss
Gameplay is solid and I like the small metroidvania feel to it.

I wasn't too distracted by the so-called torture porn, but I do think it can be a bit overdone.

Very early contender for game of the year and I'm about 80% done the game and I can't wait for a sequel to this already! Definitely going to go back now and get all the collectibles.

There's Okami in my Tomb Raider.

Can anyone who's beaten the game and tried the multiplayer tell me of the MP maps spoil SP locations? Was curious if they're copied and pasted or new areas ala Crysis 3 (well, there are some sp repeats in that game but it also has some new stuff too).

I haven't played Tomb Raider yet, but I totally agree. Uncharted with its amazing spectacle combined with more "gamer" elements (exploration, collecting, leveling up, etc) would really go a long ways towards making the series feel less one dimensional.

btw, does anyone know if the PS3 version runs up to snuff (or at least not horribly gimped)? thinking about grabbing it on PSN.

Uncharted games are awesome, but Tomb Raider is its own game that draws on the best elements of some of the most popular AAA games. I really enjoy this approach, and if games continue down this route, it could make for a very interesting competitive cycle on AAA games.

It looks and runs quite well actually.. Very little frame drop, and clean IQ.

I really hope I'm not more than 15-20% into this one. About to go to the radio tower.

Posted this earlier but didn't receive an answer...
Looking back it seems I didn't even word a question in there...
How far (% wise) am I through the game? Or approx., how many hours do I have left? I did this in like ~3 hours or so.

15-20% sounds about right.

I've not finished the game yet, but apparently I'm just over half way through, and I did the radio tower bit a few hours ago.

Randomly picked up the game at Gamestop today for some reason.

Never played a Tomb Raider game, anything to expect from this game/franchise before I jump in?

I hated the other Tomb Raider games (I knew they were good in their own right I was just terrible at them and was bored constantly) even back when I had 1 and 2 on the PS1. Legend was mediocre, a turn in the right direction. Never played underworld, heard similar things though. This one, however is different. The story has me intrigued, the characters, while not good by any means, are moderately, I stretch the word a lot here, likable (outside of Lara and Roth who are great). The gameplay is top notch, the set pieces are fantastic, the platforming superb, and the sound flows well with the gameplay. And I'm only 3 or so hours in. The game is fantastic.

Downloading as soon as I get the email with the PSN codes I ordered from gamestop.com.

Which is taking like, a really long time. I figured I would get it right after the purchase since it's, you know, digital and shit.

Alright so I just reached the third save point and decided to call it a day. I went back to the first two areas to collect a bunch of trinkets and things, which was pretty fun. I miss this kind of exploration, limited as it may be, in the Uncharted games. Weird thing though - I got a map and collected all the items in the first two areas, but it says I'm only 61% complete in that area. What am I missing?

I started the game kinda meh on the whole thing, as it didn't really impress me very much and the game does a lot of hand holding. But into my second hour the game started to open up a little and I started to get more into the game. I will say though, and this might be considered blasphemy in this thread, but Camilla Luddington's voice acting is pretty bad at times; she doesn't really have the ability to hit the emotional spectrum that the character seems to require of her. The rest of the characters are surprisingly voiced better (so far at least).

The combat seems pretty fun, although my accuracy with the bow is horrendous. However the first time I fought wolves in the wild (i.e. not in a QTE) it was pretty harrowing and fun. I look forward to messing around with the combat system in subsequent play sessions.

I will say this though - Nixxes really knows how to make the PS3 sing. This game looks gorgeous, and I daresay it rivals Uncharted considering the levels are significantly larger. The framerate doesn't really suffer either, so I'm glad to have picked this up on PS3.

So, positive impressions so far, but it's not blowing me away. Definitely better than Uncharted 3 so far at least.

just got the climbing gear. Great game so far.

edit: oh, and tressefx is sex. Running 1080p with everything ultra and not a single issue so far. Also streaming at the same time.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

It's been mentioned several times, but Uncharted has always been this way for me. I really disliked much of the gameplay, but the setpieces, narrative, and characterization usually are enough to keep me engaged regardless. Uncharted 3 though...yeesh, finished that recently and outside of a few really grand spectacles, the rest was a total letdown.

Looking forward to giving this game a look. I have really adored most of CD's output with the TR license, particularly Anniversary, easily one of my favorite gems of the last decade.

I'm liking this game a lot so far. It's a nice third person shooter like Uncharted but with cool little gadgets to use as well.

I'm also surprised how well the game does cover without a button. That stuff usually bugs me but it all flows nicely here and it's super impressive.

Is the progress on your save slot related to the main story or overall completion (collectibles/upgrades/tombs/etc)?

Played about 4 hours tonight, got the first two areas 100%. I'm about an hour into the third area and decided to stop for the night.

All I can say is wow, simply amazing so far. Crystal dynamics has delivered on every level so far and if it keeps this up I think we have an early GOTY contender on our hands. If you have any doubts, drop them. This game is amazing.

OH MY GAWD. This game is absolutely STUNNING using Nvidia 3D Vision. It's truly 'next-gen' WOW to me. Your opinion on 3D is invalid until you've seen this game running at 60FPS on ULTRA settings. Anyone else here playing this way? What do you think?

This game really pleasantly surprised me.

My brother just got it on steam and I'm kinda impressed.

I need to give it a bit more time, and I still wish there was less gratuitous violence, but hey it's still pretty cool.

I actually think the combat is really fun, there's just a little too much of it given the grimness of the game. Once you get melee + shotgun it feels supremely badass, although I'm not sure if "supremely badass" is something that should happen in a game about someone not wanting to kill anyone.

Figure that was just producer speak. Pretty much everything indicates Lara is a natural born killer.

I've been playing it for a few hours.
It feels like a really well done Uncharted 2 clone although there's less Indiana Jones and more Lost to the atmosphere. I think it's really well done, graphics are really impressive and realistic (although a bit flickering with all the transparencies used). Controls are really good and the combat sequences are better than I thought.
Only negative is that in 2013 this doesn't feel fresh at all.

First secret tomb is glitched for me.

I got the lift all the way up, but there's invisible walls all around it. I can climb inside of it, but once I'm in there I have to clip my way out by dodging until I fall through the floor. When I jump towards the wall I need to climb and hit square, Lara pulls her axe out but doesn't move forward.

Aside from that, I'm loving the game. I've been using the bow whenever it's an option, and I'm really enjoying the combat. I've been hyped for year of the bow, and so far I'm not disappointed.

pad or m/kb?

Depends how much you enjoy shooter controls on the pad.

I've been playing with kb/m and it's overall been fine. It's just the QTEs which are screwed, a few of them only show the icon and not the button it's assigned to. Can check the icons in key mapping though. You could also just shove the controller on for those QTEs and use kb/m for the rest, there isn't that many really.
