Ubisoft issues totally convincing response to Assassin's Creed Unity's resolution

Wait a minute.

So first you say "we're locking the game arbitrarily to avoid debates"

Then you say "resolution is not final"

Then you say "900p 30fps just feels better than 60fps and 1080p because its more 'cinematic'"

And now "We did not do that thing we said we did, please buy our game"?

Jesus christ Ubi.

I'll laugh if this is explained in the lore as you are experiencing the memories in the Animus through the framework of your mind, whoever "you" are now that Desmond has been replaced by a generic guy starting with Black Flag. Since you are a British individual, the people all speak the language you understand with your native accent.
I'm pretty sure that is exactly the official reasoning.

Edit: Yep.

IGN said:
"The idea is that the Animus is translating everything into the language you’re playing in. That’s why, since you’re an Anglophone, you’re hearing all the dialogue and cinematics in English," Amancio said. "It would really make no sense for there to be a French accent because that would mean that this French character is trying to address you in accented English. Everyone in the game is not trying to speak English for your benefit.”

The British accents were chosen by the team simply because they are more reflective of the time period in which Assassin's Creed Unity is set, using Hollywood's trick of implementing British accents to give the setting a period feel.

Glad Ubisoft was able to clear up what Ubisoft said.

Hopefully the offending parties of Ubisoft weren't sent to the Ubisoft limbo offices as punishment for being Ubisoft.

900/30 is fine if they want to focus on gameplay.
But AC doesn't have good gameplay element...so what are they talking about?
They only have square/triangle combat system, no skills combination, and a range weapon.

SoM has 30 orcs on screen at the same time, with different skill animations, fire barrels/arrows/explosion, beasts jumping/stomping on you, just simply chaotic...AC series never have these in the past decade.
And with AC: U gameplay trailer, you don't see anything news. You are still sneaking around, and assassinating 2 guys casually standing at the door. When you are fighting in a large group, only 5 guys come to greet you.

So what is Ubisoft talking about anyway? Playing hide and seek with 100 NPC in the city?
Finding a seat with another 20 NPC? Punching the extra HD graphic out of the next gen beggars?

I agree the gameplay is quite repetitive in the AC series but they promised a return to form with assassinations akin to the ones we had in AC1 and don't forget the game has coop.

We'll see how consistent it is at release. Watch_Dogs had it's issues, especially with multiplayer.
100%. I haven't touched it in a long ass time, I pre-purchased it digitally on PS4 too so theres no chance at even getting trade-in for it. Very bad foresight by myself there. Won't be buying Unity at launch, maybe if theres a lull in 2015.

I should say something, but the relative amount of care I have for this topic has long since passed zero.

I will say, though, that this whole thread is crazy.

Its even more ridiculous because they are blatantly lying. "We do no artificially limit our games for any platform" =/= Watch Dogs original tech demo graphic files still found in the PC port that were taken out purposefully?

Its certainly possible and Ive said from the beginning MS may have no part in this. It could be 100% Ubis fault and they've botched their current gen AC engine. A lot of stuff is looking that way especially considering we went hands on with titles that aren't out for 6+ months and yet Unity which is out next month had no live demo.

Who knows the answer for sure at this point but Ubi has dropped the ball on this one.

Ubi should hire better engine programmers, then.

I'm ashamed to admit, I find that gif arousing, and I don't have a Tarantino fixation.

Still, week's not over yet. Maybe the gaffe machine has something in store for us to tide over for the weekend.

Yeah that's what I thought from the beginning too but people like a good mob outrage I guess.. I find it funny that if you're not all up in arms about this whole affair you're labeled as an Xbox fanboy but whatever.

Also on the subject there is no way this footage was from the console versions
For all we know, it could be the ps4 version. I don't think any other trailer intentionally blurs out the controls. Not even the pc with xb1 spec demos.

Yup I'm well aware of that but why not wait to see how both versions fare. The PS4 could be a solid 30fps while the Xbox One dipping into low 20's with even less graphical effects.
That woudn't be proof that the PS4 couldn't handle it. That would just show that either the Xbox One can't handle 900p even, or Ubisoft just didn't optimize well enough even on the Xbox One.

What graphic fidelity? They can't even get this thing running at full HD, and then have balls to talk about bringing a true next gen game. Who knows, it might even look bad than Black Flag. I don't have high hopes for this game.

Lol true but I was just educating their PR department what correct terms to use. I'm getting tired of hearing this cinematic nonsense. I hope they don't use that crap again for The Order either.

I guess a better term would be they wanted to push their shitty engine's graphics as much as they could at 900p/30fps because supersampled bullshots and bullvideos will sell the game.

As long as they're being truthful (yearight), why not just admit that they don't give a fuck about the actual quality of their product (and, by extension, their customers), and don't want to "waste" the time and money required to actually optimize the game for the hardware they're delivering it on. They know the game will sell like hotcakes regardless, which will only make it worse next time.. it's financially "successful" to make a game in this way, so they'll continue doing it. That's why all of their games for the last few years have been basically the exact same thing in a different wrapper. Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed (and probably The Division as well)... the same game with different art. And they're amazing because Ubisoft says they're amazing.

I wasn't planning on picking the game up in any event, but still. They would have been better off just not talking about any of it.. zero word about resolution or framerate and let Digital Foundry do it for them. The outcome would be the same.

Isn't the issue with Ubisoft games the fact they have all these disparate teams and studios working on discrete chunks of the game, which then get bolted together in the final few months. There isn't a core team working on the performance, which leads to the constant Ubisoft downgrades you get with the final version. They have to dial things back just to get all the pieces working together.

If they had more time they could optimise it more, but that doesn't seem to be a priority with their development schedule.

It's part of the marketing-customer dance. They want to make you like the product even though your brain is likely playing a bunch of submarine alarm noises to warn you that it's advertising bullshit.

That's an incredibly odd way of developing games and Ubi should start thinking about not doing that.

Well could be but I doubt it. It wouldn't be the first time.
Like I was rewatching the Yakkum trailer for 2K15, (still from Gamersyde 1080P mp4) and the game is definitely not that clean on consoles.

I could well be wrong. I've seen comments to suggest that process is what happens, but don't take anything I said as gospel.

Edit: What I said seems to be correct. AC4 had nine separate studios working on it!

Ahahah, I was just guessing when I said that. The intentional design is actually genius. It ensures the player of the game always understands clearly what people are saying in the game, and it also saves on localization costs because they can just hire voice actors who speak the language's native accent. And if anyone raises an objection they can just say IT'S IN THE LORE~!!!!!!

Well that's EA, I trust Ubisoft way more than I trust EA. AC has never been falsely advertised before in trailers or demos. No reason for them to start now.

Crowds of thousands on screen at once. Thousands = at least 2000.

Idon'tbelieveyou.gif

Well yeah, that is why they only released a gameplay video of you killing guards in a small room.
If they can even do 100 NPC gameplay and not a CG cutscene, then yeah, they would brag about it...but you don't see that do you?

I think this generation will produce some of the best tell all books with stories like these. So much shady shit has gone down and it hasn't even been 1 full year with these consoles!

They should really shut up.

If you don't want to be transparent then stick to one stupid excuse and roll with it. It's insulting to see them think we're that goddamn stupid and will believe the crap they spew out.

Then again we're probably giving them a reason to since there's so many of us that just complain and buy the game anyway.

Graphically, I don't hear too many complaints. I think both consoles run it at 1080p/60.

That net code though - that's a different story. My god.
Well to bring the topic back to Unity, the AC series has fortunately not been falsely advertised or represented. The series is very consistent when it comes to playing like the trailers and demos, they've also maintained the visuals of the demos too.

I will be surprised if studios continue to bring up resolution and framerate of console releases prior to release in the future, unless it is 1080p and 60 fps. Otherwise, there's always drama, anger, and concern. It doesn't help when your spokesperson handles such a touchy issue with such little tact either.

I'd still swap 2000 glorified traffic cones for 1 interesting NPC that actually exists in the world.

One day I hope the consoles are powerful enough to get that 1990 technology back.

Just read Ubisoft response, it read like straight damage control. Not to mention it avoided the main objection that the CPU has nothing to do with resolution, frame rate yes, resolution no.

If you came to me a week ago and told me that all this would be happening I probably wouldn't have believed you. Damn. They have tainted the message so close to release for me. I think I will buy the game and let it sit for 2 weeks or so and hope for a 1080p patch.

“I simply chose the wrong words when talking about the game’s resolution, and for that I’m sorry.”

What are the right words for "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff." then?

That's pretty much exactly what they're hoping you would do.

Honestly why is everyone wasting their outrage on the resolution?

They're fucking FRENCH developers who gave FRENCH people ENGLISH accents. We should be burning shit.

Priorities.

I thought something was off with the last video I watched. Didn't they make some excuse about there not being french accents?

Sometimes it really does seem like Eden is Yves's secret account!
On a side note, I prefer EA over Ubisoft. Dragon Age Inquisition and whatever overpriced DLC they announce will be getting my money this year. Ubisoft can go fuck themselves since they prefer Microsoft's money instead of money.

Edit: Also I agree...that gif is strangely a bit arousing...Ally Mcbeal

Who exactly said that there weren't any interesting npcs in the game? http://blog.ubi.com/assassins-creed-unity-side-content-guide/ You will meet many historical figures in the game, all of whom have their own stories.

That isn't what an interesting NPC is.

That is a person in the world who has a house. They wake up and do their job. You can talk to them, you can sit down next to them during dinner at the pub.

When You kill them, they are dead and gone from the world. You can visit their old house and it is empty. They no longer go to the pub for a drink.

2000 people standing around who don't exist when you look the other way is not interesting to me. I would suggest it is a complete waste of processing power and just makes a lifeless and dead world.

Me: After watching Assassin Creed Unity at E3..."Gotta pre order this one! Ubisoft, take my money!!!"

Ubisoft: Life is good!

Me: After hearing both the first quote about locking the resolution to "avoid debate", then the response about the resolution..."Sorry, Ubi, I'm going to nix the Unity order and get Shadow of Mordor. I don't believe you're being honest!"

Ubisoft: But you said you were going to buy my game. What about Paris???

Me: “I simply chose the wrong words about buying this, and for that I’m sorry.”
