Erm, the economy is quite important to say the least, and we're not in a very good state at the moment. It's probably everyone's biggest concern.

I'm not sure that whatever the markets did today would be a good indicator for anything. The markets are very fickle and particular, I wouldn't rely on them to track anything, unless shit hits the fan, or the play makers fancy a giggle.

Not sure what's so important about voting reform, not sure if many people care about that, it only became an issue before the election when Labour raised it as a potential carrot for the Libs when they knew they were screwed and feared of a hung Parliament.
My country has been in a constant government crisis since 2007. We've had coalition talks for 194 days, and up till today we're still in crisis because the government has fallen again (it's happened like 5 times in 3 years) a few weeks ago and we'll go voting in June. Basically, it means that de facto we haven't had a decent government in 3 years. Yet, our economy is still here. I'm not saying the absence of a government has no negative effect on the economy at all, but a country like the UK will definitely manage. Stop worrying about the Pound and Stock Index and such for now. It's been only 4 days...

I love the fact that, although the Lib Dems got the least number of votes out of the three main parties, Nick Clegg is the person who is basically deciding the next PM.

Which one? :p

I think I'd like to see a relative unknown untarnished by the ancien regime and who places emphasis on civil liberties above authoritarianism. That way if we must have another Labour Prime Minister in the near future, he or she hopefully won't be as authoritarian as Blair and Brown have been.

I'm not worried at all about the pound or the stock market per se.

I am concerned about government borrowing, the budget deficit and the incoherent plans to manage this (because no one has the balls to do what it necessary), procrastinating and denial will only make things worse exponentially.

Not at all. This is all fascinating stuff.

Plus, there's nothing to actually grieve about. Yet. Is there?

Not quite, but a few weeks ago I had resigned myself to the idea of the Conservatives getting into power. Now the Tories are having to use a reform that could send them into irrelevancy as a bargaining tool! Depending how things go I think we could be witnessing the death of Cameron.

The problem with the pound and stock market is just the face of a really deep problem with the UK economy. imo the Economy is more important than electoral reform atm.

Perhaps you're right. Belgium has firmly anchored mechanisms for dealing with coalition difficulties and the absence of a decent government. I doubt the UK has those considering the rarity of a Hung Parliament. But I really don't see how you'd have to be worried after just 4 days of talks. At this point there doesn't even seem to be deadlock in the negotiations. There's still a lot of proposals and talks going on. I don't see why it wouldn't lead to a coalition before the end of this week. But you never know off course.

2207: The Lib Dems tell the BBC their meeting with Labour was "constructive".
2159: The talks between Labour and the Lib Dems have broken up. Schools Secretary Ed Balls tells the BBC they were "positive and constructive".

Where have i heard that before?

Calm down. Even the CBI said that cuts don't have to start until next year. Tories have been playing up the needs for massive cuts straight away.

I wonder how much longer this can realistically go on for. Surely some sort of deal will have to come within the next 2 days or so.

For a VERY long time just fine.

No need to rush into anything.

Gordon Brown said:
There's a lot to this job, and as you saw yesterday, I don't get all of it right, but I do know how to run the economy in good times and in bad. When the banks collapsed, I took immediate action to stop crisis becoming calamity and to stop a recession becoming a depression. As a result of that, Britain is now on the road to recovery. But as we meet tonight, economies in Europe are in peril, and there is a risk of dragging us into recession. So I'm determined that nothing will happen in Britain that will put us back in that position, and I want to set out my plan, and why this year is so important. Support the economy now, and you will ensure that there are jobs and a recovery, and ensure that we can have the resources for deficit reduction. Shrink the economy now, as the Conservatives would do, and they risk your jobs, living standards and tax credits. So it's not my future that matters, it's your future that's on the ballot paper next Thursday. And I'm the one to fight for your future.

Not any more.

Actually, one thing I am curious about is this bit in the 'resignation' speech:

Gordon Brown said:
The reason that we have a hung Parliament is that no single party and no single leader was able to win the full support of the country. As leader of my party, I must accept that that is a judgment on me.

Strange, isn't it, that with one breath he accepts that the electorate gave him a personal drubbing and yet he seems not to accept in the very next paragraph the electorate (same electorate, same results, same votes) gave his PARTY a drubbing.

They want us to continue

Oh no they don't.

is it a constituency where the result can be easily predicted already or is it a marginal?
