UK PoliGAF thread of tell me about the rabbits again, Dave.

Anybody see the ITV news today? They ad footage of David clearly turning to Harriet Harman saying “Why are you clapping? You voted for it" with a pretty pissed off look when Ed criticised the Iraq war.

Probably creative editing on ITVs part... the media seem obsessed with trying to create a drama out of the Milliband rivalry

I watched that part of the speech on BBC and both David Milliband and Jack Straw are watching him say those things perfectly respectfully

i'm glad david didn't get in. i've seen him in interviews on newsnight and stuff and he's an absolute pussy. he starts floundering as soon as he gets any remotely pressing questions. his image is preceisely that, a well engineered facade and he's a smarmy prick to boot.

still i cant say i'm happy with the choice of his ten year old brother either

What? David is sure to leave tomorrow, so it doesn't really matter what ITV caught him saying or doing. That's not to say it's not worth watching though.

It was a good speech, and well delivered. It didn't make me personally change my mind, but his speech wasn't aimed at me. It was aimed at left, centre-left leaning voters and Guardianistas. The only thing that particularly irritated me was his defence for big government/state, when in the newsnight leadership election debate I watched he conceded that the state has gotten too big. Evidently he has changed back to his original position now.

David Miliband has every right to be irritated by Ed's disavowal of the Iraq war when it is pretty much well-known that Ed's epiphany came quite late in his political career and originally he just as supportive as his brother. But having said that, there's nothing wrong with saying that it was a mistake. I think it's obvious to everyone that in hindsight, Iraq did more damage to our international reputation than any time since the Suez crisis. I would be interested to find out a bit more about Ed's foreign policy though. I hope his disavowal of New Labour means disowning costly liberal interventionism too.

You actually think they dubbed in the audio? And you think no other outlets would notice?

Well it did happen.
David Miliband has been caught on film rebuking a former cabinet minister for applauding his brother who said Labour was "wrong" to go to war in Iraq.

Ed Miliband, who was not an MP when Iraq was invaded, raised the issue in his first speech as Labour leader.

Former Foreign Secretary David Miliband was filmed turning to Harriet Harman and asking: "You voted for it, why are you clapping?"

Alistair Darling, Jack Straw and Andy Burnham also did not applaud.

It'll be a shame if David steps down from politics after this, i'd love to have seen him in the shadow cabinet.

Haven't seen the speech, but the summaries i've read sound good. I liked him making sure he distances himself from crazy union action, recognizing that the deficit does need to be cut and that they can't oppose every cut by the coalition and the yellow ed stuff on civil liberties and iraq. Hope he keeps it up when those ideas turn into more direct policies.

Isn't David a bit young to retire? I mean he isn't even out of his 40s yet, he's a kid in political terms. If he does leave I'm sure he'll join some bullshit centre-left thinktank or something.

I think he's been working at such a high profile level that he'd like to spend time with his family. Nick Robinson had heard word that his wife would like him to do that IIRC... and tbh who could blame him if he can afford it?

I don't think there's anything to stop him coming back if Ed doesn't prove too successful

It seems unclear as to whether he's just leaving front bench politics and going back to the back benches, or actually resigning as an MP.

If it's the latter, I think we can safely the say the guy will earn a fortune from consultancy jobs, after-dinner speaking, etc; basically everything Blair does now.

Nice bit on Question Time, someone suggesting Gordon Brown was very angry about Ed's speech, Paxman - 'Does anybody really care what Gordon Brown thinks anymore?'

I was reading this story about the tories paving the way for new local TV stations when I read this snippet:

Scores of local TV stations could be launched across the UK under new plans outlined yesterday by the Coalition Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

The Tory MP paved the way for more regional news broadcasting by removing cross-media barriers that can prevent companies from offering television programmes alongside newspapers, websites or radio stations.

They've snuck that out of the back door haven't they?

Just what we need! Trinity Mirror Group and News International propagandizing us on a local level! More exposure to their 'editorial', seceding more control of public opinion.

This country will have its own Fox News shit-fest before we know it!

History teaches that when the government tried to stop Murdoch and his cohorts irresponsibly expanding and operating his media ownership, he straight-up ignored them and got away with it. We move from that shining moment to pitiably half-hearted regulation, and from there we slide, slide inexorably down, into woeful capitulation.

Motherfucker will die soon.

We've already had Dirty Desmond purchasing Channel Five with no objections. Expect News Corp's attempt to buy out the remaining 61% of Sky shares to go through untroubled.

Ed doesn't believe in God? So he agrees with Nick too then I guess.

And someone at Sky suggested David "Loser" Millo might take up the soon to be vacant ambassador to the US role. I imagine him and Hillary will have many a fun night together there.

Caught sight of yesterday's Sun headline.

Don't call me Red Ed
(OOPS SORRY, WE JUST DID)

Ed Miliband yesterday pleaded: "Don't call me Red" - then delighted socialists with his left-leaning blueprint for Britian.

Looks like American media isn't the only one trying to whip up a storm about teh socialisums.

She's alleging Labour pulled a Bush? The irony - as the article implies - is that the system is actually skewed in favour of the Conservatives.

Well, to be more specific, it favours the two major parties. It may not deserve a place in a Tories vs. Labour discussion.

The Lib Dems get bugger all seats despite earning around a quarter of the votes every election and smaller parties struggle to get even a single seat - hence why it was such a big deal when the Green Party won a single seat in a Parliament of 600+.

My thoughts precisely.

Maybe a bit cynical, but since they were running against each other I suspect DM believes he has his better chance (if EM fails) if he distances himself now. And if he didn't show enough fire over the last 2-3 years he's found a reason for having it now.

And, I think that DM thinks that EM will fail.

What we are going to get out of this (and the history of the last 3/4 years would have been different if we had had it before) is a David Miliband with attitude. Which is what he has mostly been lacking.

Interesting times ahead.

Ah, you mean all they're doing is taking robust action to address the biggest problem facing the country right now.

Can't say that, personally, I have a big problem with a government doing that. That's what governments are supposed to do.

If you want a cause to be involved in, go grab yourself a first-class ticket on a train heading west out of london some day, sit opposite a highish-ranking civil servant and ask them what the fuck they do all day. (I did this many years ago, almost came to blows!).

I understand the sentiment, being Welsh, but asking Cameron to 'give' independence is in effect conceding that he has the power to do so. And that's conceding Scottish self-determination, which is, after all, the only argument in favour of independence.

Roll on the referendum though.

Well, there's this whole fashionable thing in the papers about comparing pay to the prime minister's - and I think they use a figure of about £142,000. THat's complete nonsense of course, because some NHS manager on £143,000 doesn't get free prime accommmodation in central London, a fully staffed country house and all the other bits and bobs that go with the job.

Besides which the implication of these articles is always that the prime minister somehow ought to be the highest paid in the country, which doesn't seem at all obvious to me, particularly since the PM doesn't produce or deliver anything and that there would probably be a limitless number of applicants for the job even if there were no pay.

I swear that, the next time I hear a PM claim that they 'run the country', I shall knock their head off. They do nothing of the sort. It is as much as they can manage to not quite manage to run the government - but that's universal rather than party political.

I'm a student that works in a 40C degrees kitchen making jacket potatoes for people at an outlet mall. I do this to support myself at university, my parents have no part in paying for it, all I get is a government loan and the money I earn for myself.

Now why don't you get a job? I know you're very upfront about your aversion to working but it really isn't that bad, and you could stop taking false pride in being lazy and living off tax payer money, and take some real pride for getting your hands dirty. Come on lad it isn't that bad.

I just had to quit a job as a Hotel barman, i had to walk into a bigass room full of people and pore them wine.. my hands shook like a bitch, i got akward as hell and asked my boss if i could go the toilet and walked 3 miles to a payphone to get my girlfriend to pick my ass up.

Bad experences like that make it hard to work.

Looks forward to see what david cameron has planned for me. it shall be good

I must express some cameraderie here. Way back in the sweltering summer of 1976 I was doing the same sort of student stuff in a biscuit factory.

It may be a long while ago but it was still bloody hot.

It sounds like a decent job, i get to pissed of at the public to deal with them my self, so a backroomed job like that sounds perfect , for a working class council estate lad like my self.

I had more bad experences dealing with the public from the 4 hours of work i done on friday to the 3 years of entire work i have done in the grass cutting biz

I remember reading a job advert for work in a refrigerated room preparing supermarket salads. The ad specified that applicants 'must be comfortable working in a female environment'. I reeled at the thought of freezing my testicles while knee-deep in oestrogen.

The coalition is making good noises on benefits so far, i think, in scrapping child benefit for those in the top two tax bands, and more importantly expanding in work benefits and having them taper off as you increase your income to further incentivise working. The former has a few caveats in the way it hurts single parents more, though means testing would likely cost more than the savings and a single parent on £45k is still wealthy, and it not coming in till 2013 which seems bizarre, and of course we'll need to see more than just rhetoric on the details of the second one, but the movement is good.
