UK/R.O.I GAF - Thread of geopolitical confusion

I liked Papa Roach when they came out, and I like them even more now. For me they have gotten better and better.

And yeah, Amen and Glassjaw were good. But never as good as Korn. Speaking of have you heard their new stuff? I actually love it.

Offspring albums for me would be

Ignition > Smash > Self-Titled > Ixnay > Americana > Conspiracy of One >>>>>>> haven't listened to the others.

A lot of my friends don't get my musical tastes. While I love the usual shit I also really like stuff like My Chemical Romance, The Rasmus, Him etc, all the stuff people normally hate. But I ain't no sheep (surprised at how many rockers are) so I like what I like regardless.

The last 3 albums I bought were the Tron Legacy remix album (Electronica), Anthem by Less Than Jake (Ska-punk) and Conditions Of My Parole by Puscifer (chilled out Prog-like, fronted by Tool's Maynard). It's safe to say that my music taste is pretty eclectic, although I was a strict metalhead for many years.

I thought you said you were more in to punk and ska when you were younger?

Best song on Hello Rockview

Buncha greebos in here stinkin' up the place.

Don't hang out outside Glasgow Central after 6pm (especially at the weekend). They always congregate there and I have no idea why.

Does anyone remember a music channel on Sky called "P-Rock" back in the early 00's? used to show a good mixture of punk, sky and hiphop. Introduced me to Cypress Hill, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise and Less Than Jake.

I never really loved Korn, although my girlfriend was almost a little too into them at the time, was a little creepy. The metal that I got into in 6th Form was mostly to tide me over until I discovered post-hardcore, at which point I knew I had found my backpack-wearing people (for a time until they all started dying their hair black and listening to Funeral for A Friend :p). But I like the aggression and speed and sharpness of hardcore/punk as opposed to the slower, more Doomy sound that you get from metal.

Nowadays I hardly listen to any heavy music. Something happened to me and now I find metal really silly, it's so uniform and humourless and samey. It's funny because the music I make is apocalypically heavy, but just not in a way that fits easily into a genre. I think the heaviest stuff I'm into now is Russian Circles and Future of the Left. They're ear bleedingly heavy, but it's not so much about wearing black and talking about my dark feelings any more.

These days my favourite bands are Los Campesinos!, Slow Club and Bright Eyes. I call it my pussy music :D

I do love a bit of MCR though, I have a mancrush on Gerard Way. The guy writes comics and sings in a punk band, how cool is that??

I was really let down by it. I wanted Fantasies v2, this new one seems to be light on choruses.
It's certainly not-Fantasies. Works much more as background music, I think. Will be good soundtrack to parties.

But wanting [band's album] v2 is poor. I never want the same album again; I already heard it. I want the new and different. Every album should have a different flavour and mood.

Yeah, boring parties where everyone is sitting down doing heroin :p Fantasies was music for SUMMER! And BONKING!
Parties where people talk and have fun!

Fantasies is too big and loud and "I'M HERE" to work as party music.

Parties require something less prominent. Match your music to the event. Nothing was worse than going 'round some kid's house in your teens and them blaring metal music loudly over the hi-fi.

Much like Claudio Sanchez from Coheed And Cambria, except he writes comics and sings in a prog band. Good music too, if you can get past the severe amount of over-dubbing he uses.

Eww, no thanks :p The music is OK (from IV, I really hate the "woah-oo-oo-ooo"-ness of the first few records) but his comics are almost embarrassingly bad. It reminds me a lot of Richard Kelly talkign about 'graphic novels' on the Donnie Darko commentaries or while makng Southland Tales. the ambition is admirable, but it's clear that they have no idea of how comics work. Gerard Way otoh channels pure joy into his books (ably assisted by Gabriel Ba) and they work both in high-concept craziness as well as character relationships.

An old friend tried getting me into reading Umbrella Academy, but I never picked it up. Sounds good, though.

I really dunno which I prefer between Fantasies and Synthetica.

Old World Underground, of course

You mean Live it Out, obviously. I'm not a fan of Emily's lisp on OWU. That song Succexy is a mess of sibilances, I can never quite tell if it's her voice or the recording. But ether way I find it hard to listen to.

Man, I'm in a well contrarian mood today, sorry peeps :)

Holy shit. I love YouTube sometimes.

Just found Coppola's Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' on YouTube. Amazing film, so long as you can get past Keanu's horrific 'English' accent.

I was (and still am). I also said that it led to me liking metal, not Nu-Metal, which I've liked for many years. I haven't been a metal fan since I was born, dude!

Oh sorry, it's just the way you said it made it sound like you only listened to metal and nothing else before getting in to other stuff.

I honestly find it difficult keeping up with all the different sub-genres, it seems there's a new one each week! I have no idea what most of them are. For me it's just metal, rock (I will allow hard rock and soft rock), punk, ska, and pretty much everything can fit into those.

I've not heard of Russian Circles, Future of the Left, Los Campesinos!, or Slow Club. I think I've heard of Bright Eyes but don't know if I've heard anything by them. I will check them out on your recommendation, always looking for new stuff to listen to!

Have you heard Threat Signal? I bought an old album based on a friend's ravings and really, really like them.

Maturity, bitches.
BGBW are you more a jpop or kpop kind of person?

I suppose Jpop since there are a few anime openings I like (guilty pleasure). In regards to Jpop and Kpop I don't really listen to anything beyond that. I admit that Gee Gee Baby Baby song was kind of catchy but during my holiday in Korea nothing really stuck out. I believe this was one of the songs that was playing during their daily (yes, they basically have multiple versions of Top of the Pops EVERYDAY):

Gee is the only kpop song I've ever heard that I thought was legitimately good. It was pure pop brilliance.

Everything else has been shite.

Live It Out is, to me, a collection of good songs that are so damn close to being great, but I feel like they're always waiting to go somewhere they never do. The title track is a particularly bad offender. I can never place my finger on why the songs irritate me so much... good album, anyway. Police and Private is a cracking track.

But meanwhile, OWU has Hustle Rose. Hnnnnnng.

Ohh you may be in for a treat then!

Russian Circles are a stupidly heavy post-rock style band. Check out Malko, I love his song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi-Lo4cHjJ0 raaaawk!!

Future of the Left are an anarchic and often hilarious welsh punk band, used to be a band called McClusky. They've just dropped a new album, this is the lead single and it's brill - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcD2cqNT1bQ

Los Campesinos! are an indie band with about 7 members. They specialise in slightly overwrought lyrics paired with awesome music. They make me feel pure joy. They're quite varied, so here's an oldie and a newie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6SO_yKMe8 & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPz00pX0kMU (this one has a particualrly great video, maybe a little nsfw though)

Slow Club are like the greatest sweetest boy-girl duo in the world. Fantastic songs, lvoely music and Rebecca has maybe the best female vocal I've ever heard. Seen them live twice now and she is spot on every time. I have a hard time thinking of one song, so heres a few - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac6mXE7UT4E & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiViJkz10nw&feature=relmfu & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npnbjh75HjE (I was at this gig!!)

I will check out Threat Signal. If I do not like them, I will mock you in person at the meet :p

Future of the Left are the funniest band I've seen live, fact. Almost a stand up show. AND THEN THEY PLAYED TO HELL WITH GOOD INTENTIONS AND EVERYONE PISSED THEIR PANTS! :D

I agree that Live It Out isn't perfect though, I think that Fantasies was the first time they followed through on the promise of the band entirely, that record is just perfect. The rest of their stuff all has good parts though, it just never came together until then for me.

BTW this thread is now 100% more satisfying that that piss-weak music thread all the hipsters post in :)

Well, when you actually talk about the music rather than post a serious of album covers, a more satisfying experience is a given :p

And FOTL is on my list of "bands I should probably go see".

That thread would rock if people actually posted links. As it is, it's just pictures, often with no context or band names given. Makes my blood boil.

I stopped using that since they changed the terms.
You mean once it stopped you stealing from the artists?

I just changed how I use it. It's pretty much a sampling tool now. When I run out of minutes, I just go to YouTube if there's something I want to check out. If there's something I'm listening to a lot, I just buy it...
This is the way.

The band themselves get like 1p per play, if that. Spotify as a research tool is fantastic so I don't mind the 5 play limit at all.

>Look up all the shit we've mentioned
>day, made

Most of it just isn't my type of music, unfortunately. There have been some good names mentioned on this page though - Los Campesinos!, Bright Eyes, Metric, etc. A surprisingly good resource for new music is the monthly NeoGAF threads, have picked up some good recommendations from there.

SNES music is so tinny and low quality.

Mega Drive was incredible, but you had to have a composer who knew what they were doing.
Couldn't the same be said of the SNES? The Mega Drive did have a better bass, but the SNES was better at replicating instruments. Depends on the genre really. Mega Drive could do electronic whereas the SNES could do orchestral.

You mean once it stopped you stealing from the artists?
If I wanted to steal from artists I'd just download the music, would get better quality sound to. I used Spotify to listen to songs I already owned but were stored on my home desktop.

OH GOD CONSOLE WAR

What I mean is the Mega Drive had (factually) better sound quality. Like, a good tune rendered on its sound chip sounds CD quality. The same cannot be said of SNES music. Great stuff was done on the SNES, no doubt, but when listening to their soundtracks I seek out arrange versions.

Of course, vast majority of Mega Drive soundtracks weren't done well anyway...

I was just being jokey anyway bro.
