UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Being a game designer myself, I know how hard it is to implement certain things into a fighting game, and Silver Surfer's board is nigh impossible to implement without breaking him in either way.

Ok then, as a game designer you should know that nothing is impossible.

Your fear about the board hitbox is why in the idea I presented on the previous page I stated that the board's box could still be victim to crumple effects and thus a combo could be started on the character regardless of the board being there. Yes having the board would have some low normals unable to cause damage (though like I said have the projectiles pass through) but that could just be part of the character's gimmick. It isn't like there aren't some characters in the game already with stuff that is unique to them (Dark Phoenix and Phoenix Wright's gameplay being two examples).

Oh I'm sure there's possibilities to include the board, but I can't come up with anything that would work in the context of MvC3.

Even with gimmicks and certain special sub-systems regarding the character, these still work within the boundaries of MvC3.
The board hitbox solution you presented would not work well. It would be a very awkward one and as mentioned, either Surfer would end up incredibly terrible or incredibly broken, even more broken as vanilla Dark Phoenix.

Believe me, I would LOVE to see Silver Surfer in it, but he is probably the easiest character to fuck up just because of his stupid surfboard. If he were using a weapon like the other Heralds or would've been displayed as a well-versed enough fighter even without the board's amplifying power (which he hasn't), then it wouldn't it even be a problem. But as it stands, Silver Surfer is one of the hardest character to implement due to this one single item.

Not exactly sure where to post this, but here are good ol' spidey's costumes

Armored suit looks nice!

Posted this in the October Comics thread but thought people here would be interested as well.

Brubaker's , Fraction's and Duane's entire Immortal Iron Fist run is available for 99 cents per issue on the Marvel Comics App. Offer lasts till 11pm est

Get it if you like digital and have never read Iron Fist. I loved the run although Duane's issues are not as good as the earlier ones imo.

I really wish they would've put Chuck in the game instead of Frank. Variety of combo weapons > shopping carts. You know what? Scrap Frank and New Jill, bring back Old Jill with her moveset, and bring in Chuck.

Edit:
I requested Ryan (the guy on Capcomunity who posts the costume blogs) to tack Trish's costumes onto the Felicia update since the Gamespot article with her went missing. I hope he will do that.

I actually really enjoy Frank in TvC and I'm really looking forward to him in this game too. I never liked Chuck as well. ;(

Frank is so much more of an enjoyable asshole than Chuck.

Good afternoon all you rumor-mongering, tier-whoring, bandwagoning, pedantic sons of bitches.

  • Nova has a bitchin' theme
  • Nova looks kinda boring to play as
  • Nova is Captain Falcon
  • Phoenix Wright sucks balls
  • Phoenix Wright has the coolest lvl 3 ever
  • Card mode is the hypest shit in Ultimate
  • Card mode should be a side tournament at every major
  • Super armor assists are more awesome than Phoenix Wright reveal
  • Nemesis/Firebrand/Dr.Strange is going to be fun
  • Ghost Rider still sucks
  • attraction/repulsion/gravitation nerf makes me cry

Also, I didn't see anywhere, but there are 105 total cards. 105 x 104 x 103 = 1,124,760 combinations

Welcome back, sir. As you've seen, a whole heap of grist for your mill has accumulated.

I was able to relate with Chuck more than Frank. I could totally see myself doing everything he did in DR2. Driving a motorcycle with chainsaws on it, saving people, hitting on asian reporters, making boxing gloves with blades, etc.

With Frank, he's just a sleazy photographer. "I've covered wars, you know." Oh yeah, Frank? Then why have I never seen any of your work before?

Exactly. Frank is supposed to be a douchebag. Chuck isn't. Chuck is a good guy and generic. I love douchebags, because I'm one myself.
See it this way: People have been clamoring for more Capcom villains, you could see Frank as one. ;)

If you love douchebags, then why were you so angry at the lack of a Raccoon reveal?

heyooooooooo

I always pegged Frank's entire character arc in DR1 as one where he starts off as a douchebag and slowly starts to care about things other than himself and his glory.

I was...less than thrilled when Blue Castle began ignoring this arc.

There were limitations around Spiderman characters due to the new movie (which is completely understandable).
I'm guessing Marvel probably said: "Use Lizard now or no Spider-Man villain at all." Stupid Marvel. I know it doesn't relate to licensing issues, so this is the only reasonable assumption I can think of.

I'd say 4-6 more total characters to reasonably please everyone. All Capcom needs is Megaman and Gene. Marvel just needs Green Goblin/Dock Ock, a female, and Gambit/Cyclops/fan fav. That's it's. Everything else is icing. They came real close.
That's pretty much exactly what I think is reasonable to round out the roster: X/Gene and Spider-Man villain/90s fan fave (e.g. Gambit). Anyone else would be icing on an already delicious cake.

Though Shaowebb did make Black Panther sound really badass... Well, here's hoping to a third expansion next year after the Spider-Man movie is out so that we can finally have a Spidey villain.

Wouldn't the appearance of X as a Heroes & Heralds card put up a huge flag in regards to there being no DLC characters in the future? Surely, I'd imagine, X would be among the next wave of DLC characters. With his placement as a card, is Capcom quietly telling us no DLC characters?

I think Chuck doing some kind of move stealing with combo cards ala rogue would of been better. Dousing himself on fire to be like Dark Phoenix or using the Boxing Knives like Wolvie would of been boss.

I think the trick is to realize the Surfer doesn't have to be on his board 100% of the time just as Ghost Rider doesn't have to live on his bike. Surfer's been portrayed in the comics as having constant control over his board and sometimes always having it nearby, or moving in concert with himself, even when he's not standing upon it. So, I'd do this:

Surfer stands upon the ground in his normal stance, and the board hovers just behind and slightly above him, oriented vertically. He jumps and super jumps under his own power. His air dash involves the board sliding under him until the dash is finished then sliding back as his forward inertia carries him the rest of the way through the dash.

The board whips around at certain times, such as for a heavy standing sweeping attack or various specials. Give the board an impression that it's alive and semi-sentient, actually anticipating his own desires and needs. Make it his partner. He could also mount the board fully for hypers and possibly for assist attacks.

If you want to keep him "floaty" but not having him be just yet another Floating Guy like Mags or Strange, give him an ethereal "walk" forward and back where his feet barely touch the ground, and make his ground dash a little float, like a skip off the ground into a soft landing. Ballet like.

In my mind that would perfectly represent the Surfer.

So...make Silver Surfer Litchi from Blaz Blue with a board stance that equates to MODOK flight?

...

YES. This actually works pretty well when you think about it. Psychic board control for projectiles and mixups, new supers in board mode, lots of range on it for the normals that involve it...I'm down for this happening.

Am I the only one who wants this Spider-man outfit :(

I have the book this image comes from. Web of Spider-Man...#100, I think?
It's awful. AWFUL. When I think of how bad the 90's were for comics this is the image that instantly jumps to the front of my brain.

I watch the tourney but missed good vs evil? Who won? (my guess is evil). Is there a link to that part of the stream? Thanks in advance!

Good won. It came down to the very last match.

So basically Chuck is boring, Frank is awesome and actually interesting.

Ya know I really wanted to like Spidey. I really did. He was great for keeping pressure on folks once he got in and he had some great mobility, but I never could enjoy doing his combos with his Spidey swing having such an AWFUL input chosen for it and now that air dashes have zero blocking capabilties the character is pretty much never going to get used by me now.

In fact Chun Li is looking pretty forlorn herself now that she can't rocket in as freely as before. Its not a gamebreaker for her since her dash is so quick and leads into crossup attacks anyways, but its not a good thing either. I used her for a decent while on point using Sent drones to create a ton of mixups for her. Maybe if she got an OTG though I'd accept the trade off.

Theres a reason why Frank is so beloved, and Chuck gets replaced in his own game.
Beloved? Really? People like him, sure, but there's far more memorable Capcom characters.

And a lot of people ended up liking Chuck after playing through DR2. I've seen a whole bunch of Off The Record reviews stating that they preferred Chuck and the character switch wasn't really necessary.

I forgot how inappropriate MvC2's music was

Also Chuck was great. I still need to play Case West, but I am looking forward to them broing it up.

Frank West has already had cameos in LP and TVC. Are there "more memorable" characters? With Capcoms long history obviously, but Frank is easily one of the most memorable ones of this gen.

Why not just have him on his feet and reserve the board for special moves? Silver Surfer on the board is the fireball!

Being one of the most memorable character this gen from Capcom isn't saying much really. Not very many new IPs period.

I like Chuck and want him to stick around, but if you give me the choice I will take Frank every time.

Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Ace Attorney, Spybots, Monster Hunter, Dark Void.

Yeah not many new IPs at all...
