UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Nova's easy to use, does decent damage, and has ways of getting in. At the very least he's beginner-friendly.

I really want Iron Fist to be good but if the opponent is good at zoning there's not much you can do.

I agree with you on both counts. This is why I emphasize so much never to use Iron Fist on anchor. Zoning will hurt his game a lot. Its the reason Wolverine is never an anchor same as most rushdown only guys are never anchors. With assists though Iron Fist will be a nightmare which is why I'm gonna rock the guy on point or middle at all times. Point preferrably.

DAT TEASER FOR NEXT WEEK'S VID

Ditto to that sentiment. He involves a lot of careful glyph strategy and if his only real way to run due to his slow ground speed is constant teleporting or illusion counter teleports then he's going to be more for folks that are better at controlling the actions of their opponents than I am. After all after you teleport to safety you may still need glyphs back where you started to create the mixup your looking for and that means you have to reclaim that position to make that glyph attempt.

Too much for me. Interesting guy with lots of tools, but thats too much work for me. Shame...I really dig his hypers in combo.

The projectile counter in particular looks useful. I wasn't sure if it was video magicary or something but I swear I saw Max somehow DHC into it without previously activating a Hyper for his other character. Probably just missed a scene transition though.

kirblar said:
The problem with mashable hypers is that it's not obvious WHEN to mash without outside information, and it's also very annoying to Mash when you're planning to DHC into another hyper.

I dont know why they brought it back outside of a few obvious moves like Haggar's hyper. It requires so little skill that the game is better off without it.

I am pretty hype for Rocket Raccoon but

SIX HUNDRED?! Glad to hear they don't have a limit on the pages though.

And:

Characters are all redone, there is no cut-and-paste going on. Remember we made the last guide in a vacuum in secret, we were kind of guessing about how we thought stuff would play out. We've benefited from the experience of seeing it out in the wild for months since then the same as anyone.

:')

He kinda hints at there being a deadline for them though, probably shortly after launch. I for sure will be pre-ordering the new testament this time around.

Holy shit a 600 page guidebook!?
O_O

Glad I already bought mine.

Also, I have something fun to mention to everyone here. I have a statistics class this semester and the teacher is letting me collect data on pretty much anything I want. Who would be down with listing things like there rankings of the current 10, there most hyped new character, fave theme, fave new assists, preferred playstyle, and intended teams for science?

If you're cool with talking about Marvel some more on Neogaf (madness!)I'll collect the data and correlate it over the next few weeks for class and then even collect new impressions after launch to check impressions. Who wants to shout some opinions!

Chris said that he doesn't exactly remember which character's colors Capcom is going to reveal on Friday, but he said he thinks it might be Hsien-Ko (as expected given the Darkstalker theme of last week).

I'll probably not be able to get the bible without import, and I'll probably spare me that. :)

Holy crap, is there something you DON'T do, man? Especially given how much time you spend on GAF regardless? :D

Was it ever confirmed whether IF's blue chi had projectile durability or invincibility? Me and bomb had words about this a couple pages back but I wasn't sure.

Of course the latter might be improbable, and the worse case scenario for durability points would be it taps out going through akuma's fireball (5 low priority durability points). But at the same time its better than nothing. Right now his only proven weaknesses is his total lack of utility in the air (barring normals and airthrow) and his standing S. He'll definitely be really solid as point or secondary.

Judging by what we know, he's sooooo not anchor material as someone pointed out.

Here's a question im not sure I've seen answered: do Taskmaster, Sentinel, et al still have to be unlocked in Ultimate? That's so annoying...

I loved reading the last guide, so I will be buying the Ultimate guide for sure. But then again, even if I didn't love the last guide, I would still be buying this one. It's something related to MvC, so it's a must-have.

I wish I could get a guide for MvC2 for cheap, but they are anything but that.

I think I remember Seth saying that all characters will be unlocked from the start.

The MVC3 bradygames guide is one of the best physical guides I have ever owned or seen. I'm really glad that they're making a new one, and with 600 pages to boot.

YOU HAVE MY SWORD

Statistics is part of my major. You don't go into animation and games without knowing how to gather and evaluate info from your audience. Plus its fun to do this and post results for you guys to enjoy.

Sweet. Ill post the questions here on Neogaf as soon as I get things settled on the control question with my teacher. Things like who your most hyped character is, fave theme, or playstyle preferences, etc etc. Considering I got less than a year now till I work in the video game profession the professor will likely be really into seeing my work.

I'll try to get word out of him early this week so I can go ahead and ask you guys fun questions on how you rank folks and such. FOR SCIENCE!

^ This sounds pretty cool, I'm game.

Saw a blog on capcom unity that said Download Hi Res UMvC3 character art and got super excited only to see its only art for the new characters. Really hoping Capcom releases the art for the returning characters soon.

My Day 1 team is probably gonna be Phoenix Wright/Trish/Dormmamu. Trish with peekabo and Dorm with purification so I can have cover for gathering evidence.

James Chen just mentioned on WNF that he believes every character has an OTG method in UMVC3. If so, praise Xenu.
If the Seth twitter ends up being true then this statement also becomes true. Chun Li was the only remaining character without an OTG but Seth says she has one so....

And HOLY SHIT @ 600+ page BIBLE. Might as well call it "Ultimate Bible". It's a god damn text book.

Him or Nova.
Nova has too many solid tools to be "bad" or worst of the new characters. Uninteresting is one thing but being competitively viable is completely different. Iron Fist is pretty much unexplored and hard to use... he's going to be a lab character for a bit. The block damage on rekka has me more interested though along with the possibility of invincibility on his crumple assist.

I spend way too much money on games and purchase all the big titles, but when anyone asks what I'm looking forward to most (UMVC3, Halo remake, AssCred, Skyrim, Zelda, Battlefield, COD, Saints Row 3) I tell them UMVC3, then the guide. Then KOF13 ;)

THIS IS MAHVEL

How about this question... out of the 12 characters what kind of teams do you have planned for each?
I may not plan to play with every character but I do have some ideas for each.

Firebrand - Anchor character probably on some sort of zoning team or meter building team. I will play him with OTG Flame carpet assist. I don't play Morrigan but I am a fan of Karst's team set up. I may pair him up with Chris/(Lockdown/Anti-air assist)/Firebrand who knows.

Strider - Strider/Vergil/Doom is pretty much a lock if I ever play that team. Both assists (Rapid Slash and Beam) extend Strider combos and set up mix ups. Order of Vergil and Strider might be swapped and Doom might be replaced with Strange if things pan out.

Nemesis - If I cannot find a way to combo after Vergil's Rising Hightime OTG then I will be pretty much forced to use Nemesis on secondary and Vergil on point/2nd. The armor on the ground bounce punch is too good. Nemesis will be going on the team with some projectile assists backing him up or a beam. Not using him anchor, point or second. Might try him out with Hidden missiles or Drones.

Vergil - If Unibeam allows him to combo after his Rising Hightime then I am all set for Wesker/Vergil/Iron Man. If not I will experiment with various projectile assists until I find something. Vergil is pretty much set to be 2nd on any time I put him on. I have heard good things about Vergil + Strange and Vergil + Strider so I will be keeping an eye out for those characters. I am not going to unveil all my tech here but let's just say I have a ton planned for this character along with potential set ups. I am also a fan of Captain America + Vergil after seeing it on stream. And someone is going to make team Devil May Cry work.

Ghost Rider - He's going to be another 2nd place character. Rider needs at least one assist to keep away/extend combos but his assists are too good to pass up so it's hard to place him on point. I might pair him up with Wolverine on point and Drones Sentinel last. I can see pairings of Ghost Rider on a Phoenix (Jean) team. Ghost Rider is going to be the new assist character from the newer characters.

Strange - Pretty much a lock for anchor character. I am going to be playing him Bolts assist with a rushdown teleport character like Zero/Vergil etc. Strange is pretty self reliant. At least 2 good assists to tinker around with meaning he will find himself on many teams. Also Strange is the best character of the new characters to counter standard anchors like Akuma and Phoenix (Jean).

Iron Fist - Best team for Iron Fist is going to be Iron Fist/(Projectile/Lockdown assist)/Trish. Iron Fist and Trish will have synergy because one provides the OTG assist and the other with the lockdown hyper. Trish locking will give Fist enough time to come in. 2nd character will probably be someone who benefits from Iron Fist's OTG Kick like Amaterasu and her Cold Star.

Phoenix Wright - Probably not going to touch him at all but I don't see him be played with anything except Doom Missiles or Sent Drones or Ghost Rider Heartless Spire. Maybe even Doom rocks. He's a point character so he's going to need 2 assists to bolster his offense/defense.

Nova - Hardest character to fit into a team right now but that's not a bad thing because Nova is fairly self sufficient. I don't even know yet if he's point or anchor or 2nd slot. Good thing about Nova is that he isn't meter hungry. It's all going to boil down to how good is Aegis Reflector assist is. I could see him on a Phoenix Wright team surprisingly.

Hawkeye - Can be played at any slot most probably first and 2nd. All 3 of his assists are good but Poison OTG assist is going to be godlike. Dude is going to be a fucking menace once he's fully explored. Will find himself on many teams especially dedicated zoning teams.

Other than teams what are your most hyped assists out of the 12 so far?
Ghost Rider - All 3 of them
Hawkeye - All 3 of them especially Poison arrow OTG
Nemesis - Only the ground bounce punch which has armor
Vergil - Rapid Slash almost exclusively
Strange - Eye of Agomotto and Bolts for Rushdown teams and Daggers of Denak for possible zoning teams
Firebrand - Almost exclusively Flame Carpet OTG assist
Nova - Gravimetric Pulse only
Iron Fist - Crescent overhead OTG kick but all 3 appear to be good
Wright - Not going to be played as an assist character anyway
Strider - Vajra for sure although Gram looks like a solid assist too

Rankings of new characters

Vergil
Firebrand
Strider
Hawkeye
Ghost Rider
Nova
Dr Strange
Nemesis
Iron Fist
Wright

As time goes on, Im getting more and more annoyed that there is no info AT ALL for Shuma. I wanna know how I can use him and plan for new stuff but HE'S IN NO FUCKING BUILDS. I wonder if the one max has, has access to shuma :(

Hard to get info for a character only 2 people use.

Who would be down with listing things like there rankings of the current 10, there most hyped new character, fave theme, fave new assists, preferred playstyle, and intended teams for science?
Ranking of characters in terms of what? I posted ranking in terms of how good I feel they are but in terms of general hype:

Vergil, Strider, Ghost Rider, Nova, Iron Fist, Strange, Firebrand, Hawkeye, Wright, Nemesis

Most hyped new character is the V man
Favorite theme is Dr Strange
Favorite new assist is hard to say... gonna go with Ghost Rider Heartless Spire
Preferred playstyle is mix ups + rushdown. I love my resets and I love my teleport characters. Can't wait to fuck up zoners in UMVC3, it's going to be fun (oh and Phoenix Wright teams).
Intended team is going to be Wesker/Vergil/Iron Man unless something about that team just doesn't click.

I'm really tempted to pick up some trade paperbacks of x-23's adventures next time I'm out and about, but I think videogames might take first priority...

While I don't like Marvel characters in general I got pretty pumped for Ghost Rider. Mainly because he resembles two Rival Schools characters :P, got Akira's gettup and Zaki's chain:

Also while we're on the topic of RS, here's a Dante alt I did a while back (to counter that awful Vergil alt):

Because we listened to way better renditions most of which were fanmade?

Dante/Ghost Rider/Phoenix all in. I gotta do that demon/hell spawn/whatever theme, its too much fun.

And my god do they look FABULOUS IN BLACK LEATHER.

I wish Phoenix had more synergy assist wise with other characters. Her whole point right now is to not die while the other two gets 5 bars :\.

In a team of new characters only, which ones do you think have the best synergy? I want to plan ahead for the week 1 tourney we'll have here.

I really want a team with Wright, so I was thinking maybe Ghost Rider (Spyre/Chain)/Phoenix Wright (Missile)/no idea.

The order of GR and Wright would depend on how well some stuff works, but the idea is for GR to cover Phoenix with his assist while he gets evidence, and for GR to keep doing week 1 "cheap" stuff (hey, winner wins a gift card for a free game, fuck honor). For third Strange would be good, but I really don't think I'll be able to use him properly at all. Depending on how his bear trap assist works I was also thinking of having Rocket Raccoon on the team. If all else fails I guess Nemesis with whatever assist has super armor.

Definitely Strider/Vergil/Strange.

Aside from that potentially Phoenix/Nova (if his Pulse barrier is any good)/Strange

Phoenix/Ghost Rider/Strange

Others I have seen being used on stream:

Vergil/Nemesis/Strange or Hawkeye

Ghost Rider/Hawkeye/Firebrand

Iron Fist/Ghost Rider/Hawkeye

Iron Fist/Ghost Rider/Strange

Most of the newer cast is fairly versatile in terms of bringing synergy on a team.

the Bolts stagger, not crumple

The Bible is the best investment of your money that isn't actually a game.

Even the best MVC3 players have the Bible under their pillows when they go to sleep. The Bible is still quoted in matches to this very day.

600+ pages of insightful Marvel knowledge... it practically pays for itself.

Same here. I am such a consumer whore.

Add another to the list. I'm amazed at how cheap these things are. There will surely be a lot more content in this guide, but it's pretty much the same price for the last one. Then again, this is the second Marvel guide I've bought this year.

i can't really commit to any teams since I need to see how people play together but I'd like to try a Chris/Frank/Nemesis team

I'm going to build the most irritating and frustrating zoning team I can though for my main team. Other characters I'd like use in a team:

Amaterasu
Tron
Morrigan
Dormammu
Trish
Spider-man
Firebrand
Phoenix Wright
Dr. Strange

People just want to play the new characters as much as possible.

Teacher is pretty warm to my proposal, but says it needs more math to run some hard numbers on. We're going over specifics of things I could try to survey us on dat Marvel for college. I may add a "rank score value of character's usefulness" to capture some mean, median and mode stuff...I should have the short survey up really soon everyone.

Marvel+Science=best school term ever.
