United States Election: Nov 6, 2012 |OT| - Barack Obama Re-elected

As a Non-American I find your Elections very exciting (probably because elections in my country are too boring and predictable).

If I didn't read Poli-GAF I would probably go insane with all the "Dead Heat" and "Tied Race" rhetoric from international news stations and CNN. I also wouldn't have discovered 538! It's also thanks to GAF for dispelling some of the elections myths like the 1980 Election Comeback etc.

I hope Obama wins as Romney seems like a really boring candidate and his flip flopping makes him unpredictable. Plus the attacks Obama has been getting from the right are quite disgusting so his victory will be a welcome slap in the face!

I can't help but feel a little nervous though that Romney might win as we saw in 2004 that Americans can make bad decisions! 2008 dispelled that, so hopefully 2012 will continue the good! :)

What do you think about the early data from Ohio?

When I saw these numbers the first thing I thought was that this is the only data that somehow is slightly surprising, taking into account that the polls in Ohio mark a clear advantage to Obama. If I'm not mistaken Obama won in this State with around a 7% margin in 2008, so in a way this may just point to a narrower victory.
I don't know where those particular statistics come from, but according to the AP, 29% of early voters in Ohio identify as Democrats vs. 23% for Republicans. About the same number of people are voting early in comparison to 2008, so it's not like voter turnout is depressed overall, as the article appears to suggest.

Make no mistake: some who voted for Barry in 2008 are apathetic now and won't show up today or tomorrow.

How many is the question.

I'm optimistic but also terrified. I'm going to be so hopelessly depressed if Romney wins. I really think he would be more disastrous than Bush Jr.

That article is a week and a half old. The pace of early voting in Ohio has actually accelerated.

Any good links out there with surveys showing the presidents positions? Ya know like those internet political survey things where they tell you the president's positions and you choose which one you agree with?

My favourite totally fabricated GOP talking point is how Obummer has destroyed America's standing in the world and everyone laughs at him and America ZOMGONOES! Because it's a perfect example of just how opaque their anti-reality bubble is.

So is this going to be the election night thread of tears and gloating? i just hope it's decisive either way in all honesty. No recounts, no one wins popular one wins electoral nonsense.

The only outcome I can't see is the Obama huge win scenario. I guess we will find out soon.

So far this is not true. Early voting is up from last election and Husted cut early voting very significantly to benefit Romney.

What counts as huge? He's tracking towards slightly above 300+ now that VA is trending his way and could possibly hit 340+ if NC/FL fall his way.

As it is, there's a floor of about 280ish if he loses states like CO/FL/VA/NC and a high of 347.

You know, it is really fucking stupid that my vote is more important than someone else's just because I live in Ohio.

It really is. At least my vote against Todd Akin will count (hopefully), even if my vote for Obama will go right down the shitter when the rural communities all vote for Romney.

I'd say anywhere over 325 is huge. Just to put a number on it. A Reagan like 500+ is another category altogether but I dont think anyone is predicting that. I think best case he hits around where Silver is saying 300-310ish. Which is decisive but not what I'd call a blowout by any means.

...and Bama won tonight.

Alabama? They must hate themselves.

Wasn't there some sort of football-related ongoing coincidence in 2010 or 2008 whcih happened to get broken that time around?

Three months ago I suspect you were correct. However I think a lot of people who may not be super enthusiastic about Obama this time around have instead realized just how terrible of a candidate Romney is

Good thing the world doesn't vote for our president.

Good thing countries are all seperate entities that have nothing to with each other and it's not like we live in a globalized world.

I am not saying that other countries should vote for your president, but yes, it is indeed good to know what the rest of the world thinks. You could interpret these stats, that voting Obama ensures good relations with all these countries while Romney ensures good relations with Pakistan.

The right thing being what the rest of the world thinks we should do? Stick to your own elections, thank you very much :)

Considering that presidential power lies mostly in foreign policy, I'd say the world's opinion of the sitting president should definitely have some bearing in someone's decision making.

I agree with that. But I don't like the arrogance of a statement like "do the right thing" from the perspective of those in other countries. We're the ones who decide what the right thing is when it comes to our own governance.

I bought sunday's paper and found this intresting (Florida)

Romney and obama had about the same amount of people contributing the campaign but Romney nearly got 5x the amount of money

The treasure coast (which in the newspaper consists of 3 counties)

Romney received $237,244 by 487 residents
Obama received: $49,234 by 471 residents

Again, considering the amount of sway the president has in foreign policy, and in particular, how much sway the U.S. has globally, I can understand why someone from another country would beseech us to "do the right thing". But I get your point.

Yeah, we alone get to butt into other countries' governance.

On the whole, I don't think Romney received more money or expended more money than Obama did.

Did Nixon do something dodgy in 72 before the election (Vietnam-wise) ? Wiki tells me it was just announcing they'd leave Vietnam, but I thought it was worse than that.

Dunno if this is what you're referring to, but since forever the Washington Redskins had correctly predicted the outcome of national elections. If they won their home opening game in an election year then the incumbent person or party retained power.

That lasted until Bush's reelection. They lost their opener that year.

Edit:
Just did some research and found it's not the home opener, but the last home game prior to election day that counts.
