Right, but I'm suggesting that in the US people are sufficiently misinformed (particularly people old enough to rely on TV/newspaper for news, rather than the internet) that both sides look that way.

Oh yeah, no doubt, that would explain Mitts popularity in the US. We do have trouble trying to fathom that from here.

This is the other thing. The only people who like Romney are from America (and Pakistan). Basically every other country, especially European ones, seem to strongly favor Obama.
And the Pakistanis that like Romney must not have gotten the memo that he is not only on the same page in terms of drone strikes but looks to be way way way more hawkish (read: W. Bush) when it comes to foreign policy.

Its not the government providing them. It's your fellow citizens having their money forcibly taken to give you these things. How is that ethical?

By living in the United States, you necessarily benefit from the things other taxpayers paid for and therefore you need to pay your portion.

Obama is just as much a hawk, at the least there isn't much difference policy wise between Obama and Bush. Because even if Bush could have been in office for another 4 years, there is no way he would have invaded another country and probably would have gotten ALOT more shit for NDAA, Drones, Torture, Gitmo, etc etc...

Well, I picked up the mail today, and was greeted with this. Keep in mind this is just today's:

Every single one of those says, right on the front, "Paid for by the Ohio Republican Party." There was one single piece that didn't:
Why the hell are they dropping a piece on Monday asking you to vote by mail? Voter suppression or are they just so bad at getting out the absentee vote that they have no clue of the timelines involved?

So now taxes for basic services are unethical? Fuck it, who needs a military while we're at it? That's the biggest federal program there is. Turn the whole thing over to Halliburton, according to Romney the private sector solution is always the best.

Strawman.

The question was is it ethical to forcibly take money from someone to pay for services of someone else?

And any good liberal decries the military industrial complex right?

Damn the man! Give him all your money!

Is it bad that I only view a few of those as pros? DADT I don't fully get the in's and outs of when it comes to what rights our men and women in the military per and post.. And the auto bailouts.... Ugh. OBL though was a highlight. Also, can any Obama supporter explain why we're still in Afghanistan when that was the war Obama justified to the American people back in 2008?

So, you think the recovery is sluggish, but you don't like the auto bailout? You realize what that would have done to our economy overall? Good lord...

Thats certainly one way to describe how taxes work, but still avoids the question. It also assumes forcibly taking my money is the only way to fund these "things" you speak of.

That's how most right-wingers look at it I guess; you're taking money from ME to give to THEM. Another way to look at it is, everyone chips in so everyone can benefit.

Very ethical, especially because you earned that money with the help of said government services. It's part of the social contract.

"My house has never been robbed, why should I pay for the police?"

never had house catch fire, fire dept

never been shot at by an enemy, military

never driven cross country, interstates

never taken a drink of tap water, EPA

never gone to school, education

Some services are in the public good and essential to maintain a healthy population to achieve a functioning democracy, and to suggest they should not be supported financially is the very definition of foolishness.

From everything I've been reading, it seems like even if Obama ultimately wins with an EV count upwards of 300 it's still going to be like 3 or 4 am EST before its called. People should really prepare their expectations / nerves / sobriety for a late, late night. This will not be over as quickly as 2008.

Everyone in Australia that I've spoken to is freaking out about how close your election seems to be, especially considering that Romney seems like the Supreme Leader of Team Evil to us.
I know how they feel. I'll be on edge even though I'm north of the border.

Didn't the FBI say that after Obama was elected, the amount of death threats they'd received against the president skyrocketed by 400% or something ludicrous?

I'll believe that since during in inaugural speech he was heavily guarded by glass walls.

In this election alone there were some death threats. I think we had a thread on it.

You dont know that there are private roads built and maintained by communities? Start by learning a bit about this basic truth then we can discuss.

Uh, the vast majority of roads are public. Good luck gettting anywhere on private roads.

Do you really think that communities, or even the private sector, could or would have built the interstate highway system? Some things only government can do. OMG COMMIE TALK.

I really would love to see a prototype nation set up by all these Randian whackjobs, it'd be a post-apocalyptic nightmare within a year.

Another vote for yes. Obviously, in many circumstances. So obviously that it strikes me as bizarre to pose the question without at least gesturing at an argument that it is almost always wrong.

By this logic no private service that you pay for to protect you in the event of emergency or crisis should exist.

The government doesnt pay for my security system.

It doesnt pay for my child's education for that matter. Privately educated and home schooled students tend to test better.

If I go to a bar and start a tab, can I accuse the bar tender of forcibly extracting $30 at the end of the night and refuse to pay my bill? You've benefited from things that cost money. You might mistakenly believe these things should not be provided by the government, but they currently are and have been for generations. So pay up.

But what happens to people who can't afford healthcare?

In the United States? Pertaining to right or wrong in conduct?

Why yes sir, imo it is.

Funnily enough...The other day I was...

...shot at by an enemy resulting in a terrible house fire. I had to use gallons of water to quell the flames....using some stuff I learned at school I wrapped my dog in a wet rug and saved his life....only to discover my dog and persian rug were stolen in the chaos...hmmm.

You should pitch that. Maybe MSNBC is looking for Liberterian-dystopian scripted programming.

Obviously, if the private sector can do something better, they are free to do so. In this case, it's hired muscle that can blindly side with a client (VS upholding the law in both directions)

The US education system is a good example of what happens when you skimp on the dollars: underfunded, poor product.

Please state the circumstance in which it is ethical for you to take my money to pay for something for yourself, that you couldnt work just as hard to have for yourself.

It's ethical because everyone pays in and gets something out. You're not special. It's not all about you or me. It's about the entire country.

I drive them daily. Odds are, so do you.

All while avoiding those pesky public roads, huh? You're such a maverick.
