Man, why they gotta kill Grenn and Pyp? :(

My memory's hazy from this point on. Does Jon go to talk to Mance in the book as well? What happens?

Yeah, Thorne and Slynt arrive and accuse him of being a traitor and all that and send him on a suicide mission to assassinate Mance. But babies are being born and Stannis arrives so Jon never gets the chance.

Does anyone have a count of how many crows actually died on screen?

There was supposed to be 100 of them but just a few minutes into that fight it looked like 25-30 of them died and that was just the start. The big Thenn killed 4-5 in a few seconds and so did Tormund.

The exact count isn't really important but when there are so few of them it just stood out. There are going to be maybe a dozen watchmen left.

My guess is maybe half survived. But probably less. Say 30-40 left out of what sounded like 102 post-MoleTown slaughter.

Nope, but that and the giant shooting the arrow were pretty awesome additions though.

edit: well Jon's pretty tough, getting shot by Ygritte a few times last season didn't seem to do all that much to him after awhile, so something small like a face to an anvil should barely phase him.

He's basically been taking abuse, physically and verbally, since he was born. You could kick Jon in the dick and he'd just take a knee and be alright.

The next episode will have a lot of trouble fitting everything in. (Yes I know its extended)

1. Jon negotiations w/Mance
2. Stannis arriving @ wall / fucking up the wild-lings.
3. Arya/Hound
4. Brenniene?
5. Tyirion in the cell/getting some news from Jamie
6. Made up shit between Jamie and Cersei (as per the trailer) - spoilering this one because I think were suppose to spoiler trailer footage?
7. Tyrion confronting/killing Shae + Dad.
8. Deany's dragons eatting a kid
9. Dragons getting chained/Drogon getting away
10. Lady Stoneheart.

The only thing in that list that is up for debate is Lady Stoneheart and we have that cryptic photo from Lena Headly in lieu of her other one which turned out to be... accurate. As a fan of the books... I really want anything involving Deany to occupy a max of 2 minutes just to get the shit acting out of the way but I know it will be given far more time (look how much time Sam and Gilly got this episode LOL). This is arguably Tyrion's biggest event to date so it can't be rushed (and it involves the best actor in the show). Which leaves us to D&D's redheaded step child... Stannis. I have a sad feeling this will be SUPER RUSHED. Given that the entirety of this episode was NW stuff, they won't wanna spend even a 1/3rd of the next episode @ the wall.

This episode should have had the battle start roughly 10-15 minutes in like Blackwater, not 20+. The retarded Sam/Gilly shit and blindman sex stories should have been done in less than 5 minutes total or even better... NOT SHOWN AT ALL. It would have given closure to the siege instead of this rather awkward climax/cliffhanger we now have.

The White Walkers are starting to be a plot element which will haunt the series later on. The only characters who seem to give a shit about the White Walkers from the politicking down south are/is Team Dragonstone... but they are clearly side-characters to an extent in which other side characters are now such as Tywin (in the books). The Wildlings are RUNNING from the white walkers, yet D&D has presented them as LETS KILL SUM CROWS!!! The only remaining element that cares about the White Walkers and thus the viewers caring is Jon Snow. Given that its clear GRRM is setting them up for the finale and we're roughly halfway through the series, it's going to be hard to given them a meaningful impact when they do show up.

Also the wall is looking rather thin on characters given they cut out a lot of who is actually there from the books...

someone earlier said that it's better to look at the show as an interpretation of the book instead of a re-creation.

For you, i advise you to look even less at recreation and just as a show on its own. I think you'll find greater happiness from that

Don't forget Bran and company as well meeting Leaf and Bloodraven. The episode seems undoable to fit in all of this stuff. :(

Was sad to see Grenn and Pyp die early. For the show's sake, I really hope GRRM doesn't have them do much in the future. Still a pity they won't be there for Jon's promotion to LC. Doesn't he end up sending them off to the different castles on the Wall? I can't remember anymore. Regardless, I'm guessing the reason they killed them off was to make room for the new characters coming to the Wall: Stannis, Melisandre, Mance, etc. They were probably thinking that there wouldn't be enough time to share among all those characters being at the Wall at the same time together.

Hopefully they clear up a lot of that when Jon talks with Mance. If he has the horn in the show he can talk about how he doesn't want to use it as he wants the wall to be up. He wants safety for the wildlings, not death to all the crows.

I liked this episode, but this was the thought I was having the whole time. I don't know how this is all going to fit in the next and if it all isn't there it's going to be an odd finish to this season.

I love the TV series. But those elements I listed won't get cut, yet they will be put in this episode (at least I'm 99% sure by casting information + the season trailer + name's of the soundtrack/episodes). Why put soooo much good material in one episode? It'd be the equivalent of killing Robb/Catlyn and Joffery in the same episode.

Playing backseat director I'd have started the siege of the wall a few episodes prior (obviously it wouldn't be as grandiose as this episode).

John Dunbar

correct about everything
They were like the only familiar faces in the crowd of Night's Watchmen though, and they offered a bit of charm/humor now and again. Now there's only Edd left :(

Meanwhile Janos Slynt got to live...

killing them off makes a lot more sense than jon just sending all his friends away.

So, Dark Souls fans...did that giant with the bow remind you of Gough?

69265_ZOSg8GZx5D_maxresdefault.jpg

I actually thought of the assholes in Anor Londo... Those assholes almost costed me a controller.

Yeah, but the silver knight archers aren't giants. =D

Shooting a crow isn't nearly as impressive as shooting a dragon though. While being blind. Gough is the best.

I suppose the bow was more reminiscent of the Silver Knight archer's as was the target, while the giant reminds me of Gough. Both work I suppose, like Morrigan said!

It would be awesome if whoever came up with the idea was a Dark Souls fan. Although I suppose it's just a coincidence.

Shiet, where is the Mann?????

Didn't expect Pyp and Grenn to die, it was a good touch. And Alisser was boss. Good shit.

I guess they are doing the Stannis part like in the books: Jon is inside Mance's tent thinking how they are going to slice him up and then the coolness begins.

Please don't bring Mel, please don't bring Mel....

Yeah, best episode of the season. The Ygrette/Jon moment was kinda cheesy with all the carnage around them but the rest was good. Guess this is what you get when you don't have Dany garbage dragging the show down.

Someone please tell me the next episode is like two hours long because they have so much shit to cover.

Stone heart
Bran and the tree
Arya and the Hound
Bravvos? Nah
Hands of Gold
Shitting Gold
Drogon's 'sheep'
Not to mention the only time I ever said 'Fuck yeah, Stannis!'

And look at that, no spoilers for accidental wandering book readers! Ha!

66 minutes.

Yeah, gonna be crazy if they try to fit that all in...maybe LSH could be start of next season. Arya leaving could be left for Bravos next season. Arya's story this season could end with whatever happens with the Hound. They probably need SOMETHING from Dany for the season finale, but they could probably fit the Drogon moment in pretty quickly.

Bran and the tree is happening, given the name of the episode. STANNIS! has to happen, as does Tywin/Shae.

I'm actually not a huge fan of episodes that jump around a lot like that...which is why I liked tonight's episode so much. I could focus on one storyline, and really get into it.

After that ending, I'm thinking that Jon beheads Slint for hiding and basically becomes commander and they skip the election.

Alliser is still around, though.

Something is going to be rushed to hell. King's Landing alone needs 25-30 minutes to do properly.

Willing to bet that Stannis material is rushed and shoe-horned in.

Also you didn't list the potential/inevitable made-up D&D scene... maybe Missadedrei(SP?) can try to teach Greyworm about sex.

even as a book-reader, it was hard to muster enthusiasm about this episode

about mid-way through, I was asking myself "why is Jon even at The Wall, again?"

not a fantastic sign

So yeah, if that scene happens, who is going to be the Frey they'll use? Wonder if it'll be a long set up.

Doesn't need to be a long setup, the whole thing can happen in a matter of a few minutes.
Merrett Frey or whomever they pick rides through the woods, perhaps have someone with a banner too. They mention that he's a Frey and maybe even the Red Wedding. BwoB attacks, captures them, brings them to Stoneheart, of whom they only see the back. They plead, she turns around, you see shock on the Frey's face, camera pans over to Stoneheart - end of episode.

Purists will complain but how sweet would it be if they somehow managed to use Walder Frey as the one she executes on first reveal. Too unrealistic, I know. >_>

Walder Frey will survive all of his descendants' deaths, I'm sure. He's gonna sit in his castle, while his family dies from getting persecuted by all the people his family upset. He'll die of old age or some nasty sickness as last member of his family, the one who led it into ruin.
That said, he's not gonna get killed by Stoneheart. He doesn't travel, he's too old for that.
