Valkyria Chronicles |OT| Beautiful art meets genre-redefining gameplay

Yea I used to watch a bit of anime back a few years ago. And even though I know 0 Japanese I noticed differences. (I actually think I know a little Japanese now. :lol :lol )

What I like about this game is that people are actually dying, as in civilians. They aren't holding back on the horror of war so far, which is refreshing.

Senjo no Valkyria - Anime Impressions

I was able to watch the first episode of the anime, here are my impressions.

Soundtrack: The game uses the soundtrack from the Videogame, a welcome change from videogame to anime transitions. It is too early to say that the anime has original music written by Sakamoto. The Opening song is okay and the ending song was pretty terrible. I was kind of hoping for an orchestral opening score to match the grand tone of the borrowed videogame score.

Animation: The art design still bothers me because it is too different than the videogame. With that said, the anime has fairly high production values and movement is very smooth. If Valkryia Chronicles keeps it up, it would be a fairly rewarding experience visually.

Storyline/Pacing: I will shock you when I say this, but the anime is actually a fairly different experience. They basically go from story point A to story point B in the videogame, but how they go there is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. This actually makes the anime experience all the more better since it will not be a complete retread of the videogame.

It also seems that they gave Susie a much larger role in the Anime, since she is already there as part of the Bruhl Defense force in the first episode and is already friends with Alicia. I would hesitate to say that Susie got promoted from a secondary character to a main character, but she will definitely have more airtime than her game predecessor. It will be interesting to see how the anime canon develops her.

Overall: The Valkyria Chronicles anime seems like it will be a different experience than the game, I look forward to see what the anime creators will come up with in developing the interaction between the main cast. I would almost go as far as to say it is an excellent representation of the game, but I will hold on to my judgment until more episodes come out.

Do you know if any subbing groups have picked this up yet for those who don't know Japanese yet? I would like to watch the show once I finish the game.

I'm really enjoying it thus far.

I have been playing Rachet and Clank, Uncharted, and Valkyria this weekend. Damn this has been one of the best weekends of gaming I have had in a LONG time.

The release will be a joint with AnimeYuki.

Sounds good, here is hoping that Valkyria Chronicles wont be like Tales of the Abyss.

Where you have every group and their uncle doing the series, but then most of them drop it by episode eight, leaving one of the worst groups left to do the fansubs.

Sadly, such a trend has been a common part of fansubs for years. A million groups start a show, especially if it's popular, and most drop out after a few episodes, leaving one, maybe two to finish.

Game is fantastic so far.
Just joined up with the squad

WHY DIDNT YOU CONVINCE ME TO GET THIS SOONER?! Even though this is a SRPG, it really feels like a JRPG. I forgot how much I have missed the genre this generation...

Just reading through all the options I have now. Absorbing new information.

Edit: WOW. Did not realize how customizable/upgradeable things were. They showed 0 of this in demo. Now I understand what you guys and gals were talking about.

Upgraded everything minus sniper. Upgraded tank armor, radiator armor, and barrel range for tank.

maybe if you actually played the demo the way it presented itself as, instead of making assumptions, you would have jumped on the boat a long time ago

Could someone give me some recommendations for my first squad setup. I would think I would want to get people who like one another for the bonus, but other than that I am clueless, lol. :lol

There are incredible amount of literature about this subject on websites about this and i'm sure if you look back maybe 1-10 pages back you might even get the answer. This thread seems to have people that tend to get the game, ask the same questions , thread talks about how awesome this game is, random info about DLC or anime. Then new gamer discovers game, asks same questions and the cycle continues.

Welcome to GAF...what do you think goes on here?

People like talking about the games they love, and usually when a someone new comes in it sparks up another conversation about the game.

I see you live up to your user name.

Anyways went ahead and picked a squad with a few lancers, and a lot of scouts and troopers. I'll see how that works out.

I see that you don't :)

Snipers are very useful so you shouldn't ignore them completely.

Early on the bonuses and penalties on each character don't really matter all that much. Just pick characters you like the look of, you might find that you end up dropping the odd character here and there, but mostly squad balance is more about getting the right mix of classes for the map, rather than specific individuals. By the time you reach the point where that stuff matters you'll have a better grasp of the system.

I will say in my experience the potentials have more effect than teaming up people who like each other, so they should be your primary concern.

Well what I would recommend is picking your squad on a mission by mission basis. You can swap characters in and out pretty easily between chapters so in the end it'll come down to personal preferences. Have fun and mix it up or tailor it to your own interests :)

I lived up to my end, I bought two copies of Valkyria Chronicles to give to my friends as birthday presents.

Those girls sure lucky that they are getting a copy of this game

A good first ep for Valkyria Chronicles. ^_^

Looks like it's taking a slightly different route than it does in the game, so it remains quite interesting for the people who played the game already.

Subbed versions are out!

$30 seems like a great deal. I haven't been into RPGs for a while so I might as well jump back in before Demons Soul and FFXIII come out. How long is this game anyway?

Anywhere from 20-50 hours. More if you go for 100% completion (all medals earned).

I typically used 3 scouts, 2 shocktroopers, 1 engineer, 1 lancer, 1 sniper. Brought in extras of the last three if the mission seemed like it was going to require them (it's obvious when you'll want to use more of a certain type). High-level scouts are pretty broken, so I used them a lot near the end. ALWAYS use Alicia, Largo, and Rosie for the bonus CP (main characters give you the bonus).

It really doesn't matter what you go with though... whatever works best for you. No need to get roped into a "what's best??!?! i need to powergame!" strategy, but obviously certain setups and strategies will make things ridiculously easy. As for the characters in each class... everyone has their favorites. :p

I got this from Gamefly (finally, it's been hard to get) and had purchased it online by hour 2.

Only up to Ch 5. taking my time, doing skirmishes to grind a little. I can't wait for spring break so I can dump 20 hours into this over a couple days.

Depends on how good the FF XIII demo is.

Also, anyone have any tips on the mission where
Welkin and Alicia start by themselves by a cabin of enemy guys
?
I keep getting owned, I may just go back and do more skirmishes :/

We had to take those down because of C&D :X

Speaking of which, is Aniplex still going after everyone and their kid brother in the U.S.? I got nailed for torrenting Persona ~Trinity Soul~ of all things, and I'm hoping I can get the VC anime with a minimum of internet shut-off-age.

Yes, I'd rather SCEA do a X'amd style release, but that was hugely popular and probably made them a good chunk of money, so naturally they'd be reluctant to do it again, especially with a PS3 exclusive franchise. :(

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Got this for $30 too and am liking it.

Don't get why I am getting C's and D's for missions though. I can't possibly see how I could have managed Mission 2 any faster or better, yet it took 5 turns to get me through both parts and I end up with a D rank.

It's just based on turns used. You'll need upgraded stats to be able to meet A in most of the first missions. After the first third of the game, A should become quite doable.
