I love Vesperia, it really is the best traditional RPG to come out this gen. Everything about the game is so top notch it isn't even funny.

As I posted earlier (about General Selvaria)...

The way Sega developed her was way too black and white, I prefer nuanced characters since it is more like reality.

I suspected this about ToV. Nice to see you're having a good time. I'm going to be mean and ask this, which is better? VC or ToV?

I would have liked to see Selvaria in squad 7 too, I even thought that for a second. But in the end, I'm glad what they did to her. It's like, despite her goodwill and doing this for love, what she has done wouldn't go unpunished. She have to face the reality and stick to the path she has chosen. The way the Gallian army treated her wasn't good, but you had it coming.

I liked Selvaria a lot and even though I wished she was treated a bit different, the conclusion of her story was still satisfying.

She showed respect to her enemy (Squad 7) and cared about her soldiers before blowing Ghirlandaio to bits.

See, I thought at first she was showing respect to Squad 7, but the more I thought about it, I think she asked how far they were away from Ghirlandio (sp?) was because she wanted to make sure her troops were safe, not because of Squad 7. But it's hard to say.

But she specifically asked for the militia to escort her troops outside the citadel, so she did want them outside the blast perimeter too. She told Alicia she'd have to make the decision of how to live as a Valkyria, wouldn't make sense if she wanted her blown up too.

Yeah, that's what I think too.

That is a hard question to answer.

They are two different subgenre's under the JRPG umbrella, strategy RPG versus a traditional RPG. What they are comparable in is the strong character-driven storytelling, and even that is hard to argue. Valkyria is one of the rare RPG's where I love the entire cast of antagonists and protagonists. Before Valkyria, the only RPG's to really connect me on that level was Tales of the Abyss (PS2), Grandia 1 (SAT & PS1), Skies of Arcadia (DC), and the Lunar Saga. Vesperia has a strong lead character, quite possibly the greatest tales lead EVER. The female cast is very strong. The problem Vesperia has is that it has cast members that are weak links. Valkyria and those aforementioned RPG's hold a special place in my heart because they are very strong character driven storylines in Japanese RPG's, Vesperia has a strong cast but the weak links along with the terrible villains don't put it on Valkyria's level (in characterization).

Soundtrack-wise, Valkyria is far superior. The soundtrack in Valkyria Chronicles is Sakimoto's best work. On the other hand, Vesperia is probably one of the weakest main tales soundtracks in a long time. Abyss and Symphonia had a far superior musical score.

Regarding Selvaria....

Sure, you can argue that as a General leading the invasion that she would have been treated like crap in the Army. Of course, it could also be possible that they could have made her a prisoner of war and developed her through her interactions with Squad 7 members from the jail cell.

As I said, there was a myriad of ways she could have been developed.

I'm on chapter 15 b and think I'm gonna have a really tough time. All my types are only lv11 and I have yet to acquire Awaken Potential/Awaken All. The cemetary guy offered it once, just when I didn't have the experience to buy it.

That's a good point.

I'm not sure, but it's possible that if you keep quitting back and forth between Book Mode and HQ, the old man will offer more orders. If not you may have to do some skirmishes, which'll net you experience as well.

I was going to start this game soon but apparently it's pretty long? Might need to hold off for a while. Got my copy used for ~$25. Looked everywhere with my for a copy for him. After 6 shops, finally found it at EB for $69.99 Canadian... Best Buy only had 2 in the province (in freaking Nanaimo on the island...) and Future Shop is sold out nationwide. I don't think either are receiving more stock... Amazon.ca has been sold out since launch. He doesn't have a PS3 yet but didn't want it to sell out before he got one.

On the other hand, Sega shipped so many copies of NiGHTS that every freaking retailer is trying to get rid of it for $10.

But given her motivation, I don't think there was any other way her character could have developed. She loved Maximilian and she made that her whole purpose in life. When he ordered her to her death, she just accepted it and dutifully followed the order. She wanted to die for him.

Yes, it would have been nice to see her evolve beyond the slavish devotion, but under the circumstances, there wasn't much chance for her to make that change. If being told to go off and die didn't bring her to senses, it would take more than a few kind words from Alicia to bring her around.

I think I like her better as a tragic figure anyway. Her story is a nice parallel to Alicia's this way too.

I'd have to agree with this. I would like to have seen her 'saved' as well. But I think the only logical way they could have written Selvaria joining Squad 7 is if Maximilian betrayed her and she actually realized how mad he truly was.

YES! Just beat Chapter 13! First try, A rank!

Selveria's got NOTHIN' on my 3-man team!

Stormed the whole map with just Aika and Vyse, followed by a lancer reinforcement to finish the tank. WIN.

Just started playing the game. Finished Mission 3 where you use the tank for the first time. It's a bit slow so far, but I do like it, and can see bags of potential.

It has a very warm, genuine cosy atmosphere about it. Like, I like the characters, the world, the ordeal etc and can sympathise with them all. It still has the hint of melodramatic oddity that all Japanese games have, but it's cool.

One thing though, I think I'm doing missions well, nobody dies, i complete the objective etc. But I still get like a rank C. What am i doing wrong here?

Start of the game. How can you really do much besides run, take cover, shoot, lob a grenade or heal someone? P.S, n00b question, how to you use regain on yourself? I can only seem to use it on others.

Just take less turns in order to get a better grade. I believe it doesn't matter who you kill or don't kill. Just run to complete the mission's objective.

As for healing yourself, the default is to heal yourself, so just don't target anything else. Point to the sky, for example, and you'll heal yourself.

I found Selvaria story very Shakespearien (if that's even a word). It would have been cool to be able to use her in squad 7 but :
1. she would be too overpowered
2. I think it would have seemed odd to me that she would betray the man she loves( she owes her life to him, and she believed she is nothing more then a weapon).

That said, i would have prefered Selvaria to blow herself up with Maximilian in the end rather then Faldio(would have made a slightly better ending in my opinion).

after you get the smoke rounds, the game assumes you'll use them more regularly, and in combat-related ways.

While that battle took pretty long for me as well, I wouldn't go out and blame her D:

oh, yeah, I totally agree.
Very "Shakespearian." Both Selvaria and Maximillian's stories are very tragic, but Maximillian's a douche, so who cares about him :p

I, too, was really hoping she'd join our team, especially after recalling glimpsing some video footage of someone controlling her, but I guess that'll have to wait until the DLC arrives :(

Okay, so I remembered someone posting a youtube link to one of the hard ex missions, and seeing as I didn't bookmark the link, nor do I remember which page or thread it was being referenced in (I think it had something to do with strategy rpgs), I searched youtube and just watched this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEMOiceXxYY

First of all: lol wat

max upgrades on royal weaponry, Lynn equipped with the Ruhm (I assume its part of the dlc package), and Alicia using 7th imperial scout rifle? That thing has 7 shots? What? :lol And its powerful!

And what? You can peek corners?! What?? I think I have a vague memory of reading something about peaking corners, but I've never used it, not once! And was that in first person? What? :lol
Shit, I need to rethink my strategy :lol

Woah, that video just blew my mind! How the heck do you peek corners?!

How do you upgrade royal weaponry? Where do you get the 7th imperial scout rifle?

Just found out a way to easily whore some XP and cash in the beginning of the game. Im sure alot of you found it out by themselves but whoevers interested:

In the second skirmish mission, place a shocktrooper and a scout in the camp on the left. The rest of the squad can be filled with anything you like. You should have one of your commanders in it, because it usually takes 6 moves to complete.

Now, with the schocktrooper, go around the left and clear every enemy up until the lower shocktrooper in the enemy camp. Keep to the left when you leave the alley to not take too much fire while passing the tank. After that you take one scout up to the enemy camp to clear the second shocktrooper. If you placed your schocktrooper right you usually get a combo attack. Thats it, occupy the base.

Nets you approx 5700 XP and 6000 cash every 10 minutes or so. This should bring your classes easily up to level 8 or so before you even start chapter 6.

getting S and A ranks at skirmishes gets you much more.

The ranking system is a bit broken like that unfortunatly.

Just watched that video, the weapons are crazy.

reading the youtube comments on the guy's other videos, it would seem the 6th and 7th rifles come with the dlc only

also, I so did not know L2 and R2 peeked corners :lol

As for royal weaponry, you need to just beat the last battle over and over and over, and occasionally reload a save because the weapons she gives you in the audience hall are randomized.

Doesn't the game itself tell you about corner peeking in one of early battles? I thought I remembered that. It's easy to miss some of those hints, though, since you're probably stepping by the popups impatiently, trying to get to the battle. (Witness the person above who didn't know how to heal yourself; that's also skimmed over in a during-battle text box.)

Well... the game tells you how Ragnaid has healing propreties but you have to figure out the "aim at no one" to heal yourself as the game doesnt tell you about that :>

Actually it does. It also tells you that you can press L3 to heal yourself as well.

True but if you pay attention when aiming with the ragnite, you'll see that if you're aiming at no one, your health info is displayed twice (upper left, lower right) whereas if you're aiming at someone you see their health info as well yours on screen and your crosshair is blue. It's a small detail but really helpful when you trying to cure a group of huddled allies.

Raise your scouts and shocktroopers first, in that order. Get them to the next tier, you'll know when that happens. Scouts, Alicia in particular, are your best tool for A-ranking missions.

Scouts are your main tool for A-ranks ? Currently getting A mostly with shocks, lancers and snupers, I don't use scouts much.

Wasn't aware for peeking neither... Thanks!
