Various PS3 games no longer let you download patches.

Bummer, as you need the patches to play online and also earn trophies. Hopefully it's not too many games and the list doesn't grow.

This is ridiculous. Added to that the fact that you have to wait to activate background downloads on PS3 which seems to be all I've done when I've turned the machine on the last week.

Meanwhile, I just put my original Splinter Cell disk from 2002 into my series X and not only did it work, it downloaded a 4k version of the game.

Anyone investing in Sony's digital environment at the moment is an absolute fool.

Still extrapolating to PS4 and PS5 data about PS3 PSN infrastructure which was renowned for not making absolutely any hacks decision to rush things up for launch…

The treatment of PS3 and PS Vita is shit though…

Hey, come on guys, this is the online, digital download only future everyone has been raving about! This is what's best for gamers, best for developers, best for retailers, and best for video gaming! Why are you guys trying to stop progress? Why are you trying to delay the future? Digital only is the BEST way for games to be published!

Uh... what? Are you saying patches shouldn't be a thing at all?

Are the digital copies not the full, patched versions anyway? They're better off just doing one final update that translates discs into digital, claiming back some good will, and calling it a day.

Well, that is one way to handle all this. Bad times indeed. I just dont trust Sony in preservation of games or my purchases in the future at all.

Imma just get this out of the way for you guys...

Fuck you Jim Ryan you son of a bitch, you're destroying Playstation

Good enough? Lol

Victim blaming much? How about holding Sony's accountable for their bullshit?

Sony has confirmed its PS3 and PSP store permanently closed after July 2, and PS Vita store permanently closed after August 27. After this players will not able to download or purchase new games on this device but they can enjoy already own games or through have PS plus subscription. Read more: Top Gaming News
Did I just read an ad?

Calm down guys, think of all the blockbusters Playstation it's going to fund by removing patch downloads! this is actually good and smart

this result is nothing surprising and fits the profile of the jimbo that we know ...and love? 🤷‍♀️

the person do not see value in legacy and would also prefer to lock users exclusively in current gen

Not on ps3, even if you have digital version you always have to download the patches separately

I'm all digital since PS3/PSP/Vita so I'm pretty disappointed in Sony's approach to PSN. Not like I'll stop being all digital, but Sony really dropping the ball lately.

Holy shit, Gran Turismo 5 without patches? lmao.
Edit: imagine the save problems with this turd. Did you have a 1.03 save and want to play on 1.0? fuck you, start again or as Sony recommends, throw your PS3 on the bin.

that's why i question last week, is it a good idea to rush and buy the games from the closing stores?

sadly my intuition is right again, better be safe against the new SCE under jim

Reading the whole thread, it sounds a lot like a hit-and-miss issue with various people over the days, rather than "Nobody can download patches for X, Y and Z game anymore". First it sounds like it was only in EU, then it works in EU and it doesn't in NA.

Which is not good either, but it could be related to server migrations and stuff like that, rather than Sony consciously deactivating patches for some games.

Oh for fuck sake, i just bought a wheel for the ps3, was actually looking to play GT5 again, i dont have any patches installed.....

(I know i can probably pick up the academy edition with all the patches included, but i should not have to)

This is the major issue, so you delete a game replay another old title or make space etc. Go back to play said title and can't download update for your disc version for it to be compatible and therefor playable.

lmao.

does ps3 supports external HDD?
i am sitting on like 180 physical games lol

time to get a 4tb disc

To be fair, if I get my money's worth out of the game at the time then I'm not going to be too aggrieved if I lose access years down the road, unless it's a PS exclusive that can't be played anywhere else. I'm not going to lose sleep if I have to pick up a copy of Sniper Elite 4 on Xbox because it doesn't work on PS6, for example.

This is why you buy your games on Disc.
Why does it matter, most of the games in questions that come on disk are 1.00 and cant be updated.

Also update on the GT5 situation, found out i had 2.14 patch downloaded on my old ps3 in 2011 and its still there, so im safe

The people asking for a digital only future aren't victims. This is what they're asking for.

i don´t like one bit the direction that Sony is taking with all this moves. Unless they want to sell us everything all over again in their counter game pass alternative.

Uh... what? Are you saying patches shouldn't be a thing at all?
You should be able to open you PS3 browser and download patches for games from developer, publisher, or enthusiast fan sites. Digital only is bad for consumers, as is locked in, centralized first party only access to updates.

With people going nuts purchasing content before the store closures, this might just be capacity problems. I doubt they have a lot of infrastructure in place for PS3, making it easy to get overrun with the purchase frenzy.

The sad part of connected devices is these type of things are inevitable. Even something as simple as sunsetting support for an old version of tls can really bugger the works.
