PlayStation 6: Sony says future platforms ‘top of mind’, exploring ‘new and enhanced’ ways to play

They are crazy, if the PS5 has not even been used the power at all.

There are hardly any games that take advantage of technology a little.

That's more of a scam from Sony.

I think that's not a smart idea, they should try to extend the PS5 generation for now. But we'll see.
yes.... maybe 2029 or 2030

Even if you release PS6, its going to be plagued by cross generational games. 1 game will have several tiers:

1) Base PS5: 30fps-60fps decent raster performance, Upscaled 4K, some raytracing, performance mode
2) PS5 Pro: FSR 4.0, 60-120fps, standard raytracing, maybe path tracing. Closer to native 4k
3) PS6: Native 4k, 120fps, full tracing, some path tracing

You get the idea. It will be towards the end that developers will make games using PS6 as a base, for PS6Pro to enhance it and get the best version on PS7.

Repeat and rinse. Is anybody's PS4Pro collecting dust now?

This is the new normal. This has been the case for PC since forever.

Some games like Fornite may still be supported on PS4 for a period even when the PS6 launches. Same thing with old ports of classic games. It makes no sense these days to arbitrarily lock out PS4, especially if its going to be a switch 2 game.

If you have a PS4 Pro, you're not playing Spider-Man 2 or GT6.

Stating that it's the wrong move is rarely a casual opinion, and if it really is, it's just incorrect. You could say that PS5 being a failure is your opinion, but it'd be factually false.

Why do you assume I dislike it as much as you?

I didn't say it was a failure but it has been underwhelming. How is that controversial?

I can say whatever I want on here and throw it into the wind. You don't have to vehemently defend the opposite of what I'm saying. You can simply disagree and be on your way.

Yeah, I bet they'll pull a Switch and make it primarily mobile with enhanced docked capabilities. I still think PC is the bigger threat for them – it seems like they're having pretty good success with first party stuff on there but I think they need to figure out how to bridge the popular "indie" games to get on consoles faster/easier.
If they manage to make a Hybrid console that run every PS5 game on the go, is a win win situation… And if you want high end graphics the PC port is for you.

What does he mean by that? :messenger_winking:
PlayStation Cube

It's a little PS5 with a handle you take it with you to stream games to your Portal or the new DualSense with a display ( Which is basically a Mini Portal ) they will call it the PU ( PlayStation Unit)

Not only was that quote entirely misleading, but it was also said 2 years after the Sega Saturn had come out. The PS5 is turning 5 this year.
I still remember that I mentioned that PS4 still had life in 2020 and could be extended for 2 more years and they ignored me.

And the worst thing is that PS5 was launched in the middle of Covid-19.

Real stupidity from Sony.

PS4 was selling 5M units in 2020, stupidity would have been to extend its lifecycle beyond that.

Platter drive is a big problem with PS4.

Sure, but that's a PS4 owners problem.

You could literally get a PS5 Digital for 375 on discount last year. It'll probably be 350 this holiday season... That's not a ton of money... if someone wants to keep playing on their ps4, let them for what it's worth.

I don't know what you're actually arguing about, honestly – you just sound like a console warrior that can't accept reading negative criticism of the platform. Who cares.

They're not launching it this year, you know that they're aiming for 2027, right? And to that point, the PS4 userbase will be completely minimal that it won't even be a factor.

5 years? 2 years at most, after they were already a co-development studio on Demon's Souls and God of War Ragnarok. And before you say anything, they had the exact same roles on both games.

Firesprite already released Horizon Call of the Mountain and was working on Project Heartbreak since 2021. Twisted Metal was not even greenlit.

And the result of them making the type of games that result in >6 years of development, Intergalactic started peoduction after TLOU2. Ask CDPR.

It wasn't 3 years nor it was greenlit, either. Insomniac has already released 3 games this generation with another one on the way.

Deviation was never owned by Sony, which pulled their funding from the project as soon as they saw that it wasn't going anywhere, which led to Deviation not having any money to keep its doors open. Not Sony's fault, though.

What?

K.

I ask again, what are the studios that will miss this console generation outside of Bend Studio?

It's still years of wasted development time no matter which way we slice it. A couple of years of lost time can make the difference between a game releasing in the PS5 gen versus on PS6. Sony were correct to not fall for the sunk cost fallacy and keep pushing live service across so many studios, but it's still had adverse consequences. They can't brush lost years under the rug.

I also don't think we can justify the mistake by pointing to existing productivity ie. yeah a live service game was cancelled at this studio but they already pumped out X number of games so we should be happy. Sony's output has a quantitative problem this generation - the games are usually great when they arrive (Concord notwithstanding) - so anything that reduces their output is going to be weighted more negatively.

PS4 was selling 5M units in 2020, stupidity would have been to extend its lifecycle even more after that.

It wasn't stupid to cease production nor would it have been stupid not to.

A price drop especially during the pandemic would have driven significantly more PS4 sales. I wouldn't be surprised if it kept production up and prices down if it had hit 130 million. Sony decided to focus its supply chain on PS5.

It's impossible to know what benefits or drawbacks there would have been had they kept PS4 going. The system still had plenty of support from games.

PS6 ? we didnt even had a PS5 gen
Fuck the gen, I just want new hardware. My PS5 Pro is getting a little old in the tooth.

Honestly I wish the games were console agnostic and they released a new Playstation every year like iPhone. It would still be cheaper to upgrade my playstation every year than my iphone and I like my playstation a shit ton more anyway.

Hermen if you are reading this, let's do it. They will pretend to be mad about it but they will line up every year to get a new one and trade in the old one. Videocards do it and they also cost way more then playstation.

PS6 already for what? There's barely anything done on PS5 lol. Production/Dev time for games has only increased, this is ridiculous.

just buy a PC a stop wasting money on obsolete hardware like the SW2, now if you love tech trash, go for it.

Improved system specs, of course.

You don't like those?

Everyone likes those, I think the argument is that the visual gap between the PS6 and PS5 will be even less impressive than late-gen PS4 to the PS5.

What are we going to get? Path tracing capabilities? Not really a generational shift. There's probably a larger conversation to be had on whether or not we've pretty much hit the ceiling on significant visual returns. Sure stuff can always look more "realistic" but I don't know how that applies to games that aren't stylistically aiming for realism.

It kind of just feels like we're at a point where PS is always just going to be chasing the latest PC performance while never having parity with it.

For the love of Christ, WHAT criticism.
I responded to your wrong assertion of Sony internally focusing on PS6 now being a bad kdea because a number of the 120M fucking PS4 users haven't made the jump in less than 7 years, while you suddenly decided to talk about you personal feelings over it for some reason.

Dude, again, it's an opinion, I said I thought it was the "wrong move" for them to be blabbing about PS6 already (it's just investor speak anyhow) – I'm not looking for you to "correct" me or "change" my mind.

Good, PS5 really is Sony's best generation ever and I can't wait to see what amazing games they can make after spending even longer on feminine facial fuzz tech.

Path tracing absolutely is a generational shift. In the games its been used in, it's a massive noticeable difference over even ray tracing. It's allowed even a yearly racing franchise, F1 25, to become the new graphics king in the genre.

And let's also not forget that 75% of gamers are playing on PS5 using 60fps modes which are usually disabling ray tracing and other enhancements that PS5 brought this generation.

My biggest wish for PS6 is to drag people kicking and screaming into the next-gen they've already denied themselves because 30fps is now too icky for some reason.

Of course they will... He's talking about future hardware. That doesn't mean they won't support their current hardware with new software.

Speaking of, do you know if the development on the handheld was a result of the PS Portal?
Reflecting on previous history, both PS Vita and PS4 started active development in 2008, taking 3 and 5 years until release respectively. Looking at PS6 starting active development in 2022 and presumably launching 5 years later, a handheld in development at the same time would mean that it took 2 years longer than the PS Vita, while starting in 2024 *after* the PS Portal was released would mean that it will have a similar timeframe as the PS Vita.
The Portal was likely a test to see if there was interest in a mobile console that plays the same games as the home console.

I must be in the minority on that stat, I usually suffer sub-60 fps just to get all the visual bells and whistles. I understand why people want faster frame rates but I've always just wanted the optimal intended visual fidelity first. I agree path tracing would be a nice boost but it seems really demanding on the hardware side on PC already, I wonder how realistic it is to expect that kind of performance on console next gen. Maybe it will be.

Do any of fellow physical ps4/5 only gamers start to feel doom and gloom that you will have to rebuy all your games on ps6 and handheld?
I am strictly physical on console....

I'm not necessarily denying that argument (even if it only really applied to actual few cases like TLOU), my point is that we don't have any other studio missing an entire generation outside of Bend Studio. We then have examples like Firesprite that were already having a focus on two kinds of projects, so the damage wasn't particularly notable, especially since something like Twisted Metal didn't even get greenlit.

An assertion is not an opinion and can totally be refuted, but you do you. At least you now realize I didn't give a flying fuck over your personal opinion about the PS5 generation.

A price drop would have had a minimal effect as Sony was struggling to make many PS4s back then in the first place. It's why the drop to 5M was massive in the first place.
I also think you have a tendency to oversell the reach of these consoles beyond year 7, this is not a Game Boy suddenly having Pocket Monsters blowing up in 1996.

Are you autistic? Just let me know so I can understand what's going on here.

I think it's realistic if PS6 is launching around late 2027.

On my 4070 Super I can use path tracing in every game that features it, getting at least 40fps at 1440p. You need DLSS of course but that's okay. Being that PS6 is a console, reconstructed 4K will be more than fine from a normal viewing TV viewing distance. And I can get even more frames for better motion clarity if I throw on frame-gen (which no doubt Sony is exploring).

Sony are partnering for PS6 with AMD once again, who have been making advances. Their FSR4 is a bit better than DLSS3 and Mark Cerny says it will completely replace PSSR on PlayStation. FSR4 also features AMD's own equivalent of Nvidia's ray reconstruction. These techniques, plus the raw power of the GPU which will surely be well beyond my 4070 Super's capability, should make path tracing viable on PS6.

We don't need new consoles, we need games that harness the power of ps5. We still only have a couple of said games. And if GTA 6 will look like that they will prove that it's not the hardware that is lacking…

I think the real question is, what will the PS6 change that will address the shortcomings of the PS5?
The biggest issues this gen weren't hardware related...
If I could snap my fingers and replace everyone's console with a PS6, is sony going to magically pump out better content faster?
Cause we all know they will continue chasing GAAS slop and just re-remaster ps4 games

They probably wont change any of that so you're better off just moving to PC or Xbox. You don't seem to understand PS isn't here to pump out as many games as they can like some major publisher. They rely on their 3rd party partners for that like MS, EA, Ubisoft, etc. Their games are just an extra little bonus you get. They aren't supposed to be the sole reason you are buying their console. I don't buy PS just because of the first party exclusive it's the FP exclusives plus all the 3rd part support that keeps me in the ecosystem.

Games take too dam long to make, 4+ years. If they want PS6 to be successful they have to start prioritizing it now. As for PS5, all it needs now is a price cut and whatever games already in the pipeline.

Already did, champ. Thanks for chiming in even though you're dead wrong. You don't seem to understand that first party support and exclusives are, and always have been a driving factor for choosing consoles. If you wanted to play Halo, you had to buy xbox, if you wanted to play the demons souls remake, you had to buy a ps5, etc.

Matter of fact, sony leadership just had a meeting where they further solidified their stance on exclusives being a driving factor for console purchases.
