[VGC] Nintendo explains why Switch 2 Game Chat screen sharing has a low frame rate

I don't have kids personally, buy folks I know do and their kids are CONSTANTLY on facetime with their friends when they are playing games.

I gave an ipad mini to one of them for xmas and they use it as a "second screen" with their iphone...they facetime on that and play on their phone.

Nintendo is doing the right thing here imo. I give Sony 6 to 7 months until they announce their version.

**Sony already has this feature apparently. I haven't played a multiplayer game with other folks on console in a very long time!
You can do this from the console but you cannot initiate it from the portal...which makes sense since the portal is just a streaming device.

Dude, I have been playing with my mates since 2021 and everyone is streaming their screens ..and pinned it to my screen while playing at full res, full fps LMAO

Again .. welcome to the PAST

Yeah, that's my experience as well. And I really don't get it.

But I'm convinced the devs had seen their own kids doing that exact thing when designing this.

The only interest I have in it is playing Goldeneye with 4 players so we can all cheat like the split-screen back in the old days. Comparable framerate, to boot.

Shitty hardware is the reason.
I for one will definitely never use that C button. Having folks on my screen talking in each others mouths while I try to play a videogame is not my cup of tea.

Did this really need an explanation? Streaming video takes bandwidth. Streaming four at the same time at high frame rates can have an impact.

It's not like you're actually trying to do split screen.
Surprised they didn't charge customers for the explanation in their Welcome Tour.

Even Sony/PS4 and Microsoft/Xbone managed to do this with mechanical hard drives...

Edit: Okay, maybe I didn't quite understand what this is about - be nice to me!^^

How do you do this on PS5?

Is there an option for it in the share menu?

TL;DR: console is not powerful enough to run everything at 60fps or even 30fps

There was zero point in them having this 'C' feature, if the quality was going to be this shockingly bad. Did they honestly, not do any consumer researh or play testing into how people would feel about this? 🤣

It's fascinating to me that people has:
  • Said this feature is pointless since Discord exists (and discord existing makes it a good platform for children to be in because Discord content is very suitable to anyone always, as we all know)
  • Said that it isn't worth the price (despite being thrown into a subscription with more stuff on it so this service in particular doesn't have a set price)
  • Said that they don't want it taking processing power from the games (but I though you were going to use discord, so why is this an issue?)
  • ...but also want the screen sharing to be 120fps (despite that being a pointless use of processing power)
You find it fascinating that people have different opinions?

I dont give a fuck about any of this shit, same way give shit about any PS5's Share button and social features.

That's how we usually use Discord. Especially if we're doing party games and stuff.

I don't see why anyone would use a feature like this when the framerate of said feature is 10fps loll. Like who's going to use a video chat service that is unusable essentially.

The difference is that PS5 games "lost" an entire CPU core to do this. 🤷‍♂️

If you're going to include a feature on your machine than don't make it unusable. Using this service will be the equivalent of trying to video chat someone on your cellphone with 1 bar of reception on a 3G network. It'll look and run absolutely horrendous.

It's not unusable and then It's better than nothing. 🤷‍♂️

Buddy you already can... https://www.playstation.com/en-us/accessories/hd-camera/

What're you going on about? Sony has been doing this for years. At 1080p/60 no less. Nintendo is incompetent.

I guess good on Nintendo not hiding th fact it looked like complete and utter dog shit in that Game chat demo lol. I am curious if only one share looks fine or not. Either way I would only be interested in the voice chat function of this, but neat for the people that want to watch slideshows of each other as you play.

yeah, this is why their chat UI takes 50% of the screen.

Is The SW2 the most retarded console ever?

Nintendo always lagged behind technologically, even against Sega in the 80s. Switch 2 camera is an insult, and this c button function is simply retarded.

See, THIS is where something like frame generation would be nice, not for gameplay, but for smoothing out video chat without hogging bandwidth.

To be fair - doing this scalable can be done just fine (so no matter the number of users you always have one incoming stream and even og Switch could handle it most likely) but that'd mean Nintendo has to pony up some cloud costs and not just charge people for P2P.

And I have always heard that Japanese take pride of their work (which they mostly do) but not the goons at Nintendo.

You either do it right or don't half ass it

It seems not to affect the overall power in the grand scheme of things

Console power scale:

PS5Pro>PS5>Series X> Series S
An entire core makes a significant difference in performance. In all those consoles plus PS4/Pro and Xone/X too.

I see it as Sony managed to add one hell of a service (shareplay, share screen) competent recording system without sacrifice the power crown.

Its ok in my book

Honestly this is a nothingburger thing to care about.

They shouldn't waste more resources on a literal background feature vs. going into the game I'm playing. All that matters is voice chat quality not being scuffed.

I have no idea why they invested so much time and effort into this. I can see what they were wanting to accomplish, but I really don't get the stop motion quality feeds. I mean, from today's standards it looked really, really rough. I get it's just not for us, it just felt so odd to see. Definitely just feels like Nintendo looked at the Kinect and were like, "Hey, let's do stuff like that." and it feels a bit late, lol.

Exactly! This is a weird thing for them to care about.

I know it's easy to make fun of this whole game chat thing but honestly I think it could have massive appeal with casuals. Similar to Wii motion controls if used as an analogy.
