VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

If all games must be installed and the games are all going to be on blu-ray discs the game sizes are going to be HUGE.

Is MS going to ship a 1TB hard drive with this sucker?

The games arent going to be huge simply because they are on a blu-ray. Check PS3 game sizes. The games that are huge are usually big because of uncompressed sound.

It's a pretty bold move for Microsoft as it would not enable them to do a cheaper 'Arcade' unit like the 360.

Are you seriously telling me you're going to buy a PS4 and not leave it connected to the internet? All is fake outrage is so obvious. PS4 has the same always on/always connected capabilities.....but you're not going to use it. Sure.
I leave my consoles connected.

Sometimes, my router drops. Sometimes, connection is down. Sometimes, servers are down.

I always install my games also, but some people just want to put in the game an play without waiting for installation and they might not want to take up the space on their hard drives.

But that's the thing. It mentions that you'll be able to start playing almost immediately and don't need to wait for the game to complete installing.

The storage question could indeed be problematic.
Even if they go for the minimum 256GB HDD like someone mentioned before. That just wouldn't cut it.
With a lot of games taking up 25GB or more, I'd expect a 1TB HDD at least and hopefully options for a 2 and 3TB system.

- All games must be installed on HDD [you can start playing few secs after installation starts],

this is going to be quite awesome for performance reason. sony ,must/will copy if they havent already. like the optional installs on all games on 360 which arent available on ps3, could be an area where ms is ahead.

Ps3 disc sizes were huge because they duplicated the image multiple times due to the shitty read speed of the drive. ...new players dont have this issue

25 GB...jezuz. I want to know why all console games are going to be so massive compared to almost all PC games.

Fuck yeah (as long as MS do away with the annoying as fuck requirement to have the disc inserted to play installed games).

The Durango will just use physical discs as a medium to get the game data onto the console. Once on the console, there will be no differentiation between digital and retails games. Depending on your internet connection/bandwidth caps etc, it can be faster/more effective to go to the shops and buy the retail disc and install, than download the game from Live/PSN.

So we are ok with discs being worthless once installed and not able to lend/trade/sell?

Like Bioshock Infinite's 30+ GB install?

Durango is rumored to only have a 6x drive. PS4 is confirmed to have 6x. I would think that installs would be at least recommended given how much data they'll need to deal with.

This would be irrelevant if you read the game from the hard drive.

Similar to what a lot of games on the PS3 currently do.

That or disc switching in the year 2014-2020.

If PS4 requires disc switching, and the Durango doesn't, I already know which console is going to be played more.

Is it just me or do people just really want to hate the next Xbox? Minus the Kinect stuff, this is pretty much exactly what the PS4 is going to do except worded differently.

Or it could be like an Xbox 1, where space is always reserved for at least one game to "install" to. But instead of just space for a cache, it's space for a full game. So if you want keep a permanent collection, you can have multiple games installed, but there will always be guaranteed space for at least one.

Amusing how this forum seems to be made up of 90% menstruated women.

I don't see anywhere in this leak mention of games not working without Internet.

All i see is the next logical step in technology. We live in a connected world, why shouldn't a new console move with the times?

I also see a standard kinect as a step forward. If its as reliable as touted, being able to naturally talk to your device and have it accomplish things is what sci-fi has been promising for a long time.

Bring it.

Like Bioshock Infinite's 30+ GB install?

People trade away their rights, for the promise of convenience all the time.

Sharing? Who needs it.

They want to play a game, read a book or watch a movie they need to sign up, just like me.

This games-as-service future is going to be interesting.

Edit your post and I'll edit the quote of yours, deal? Don't know why? Then I can't help you.

Did it ever cross anyone's mind that maybe, just maybe Edge and VGleaks may have misinterpreted the info given to them or maybe their "sources" misinterpreted it? Many posters in this thread seemed to take "Always Connected" as "Online required".

I agree. I think their sources is the same XDK document.. They probably read "Always On, Always Connected" and assumed you had to be online to play. Lack of reading comprehension....lol.

I fault to see te issue with an always on console. It does not imply drm, just basic functionality that any next gen console should obviously have.

The liner thing is bullshit, but maybe they're trying to make this a cross between a wii and a ps4.

They make it clear in the comments the XDK doc isn't where they got all their info from.

Ya its weird. Like less than a handfull of games but suddenly EVERYTHING is 25 + gigs.

PC Games today are already massive.
No where NEAR 25 for even close to the majority. AAA titles can still come in under 15 easily. I am not saying ALL. I am just saying people suddenly pretending like 25 is some defacto number. Seems odd is all.

Oh please, these are trivial stuff for console warriors as marketing propaganda. If that's really an annoyance ( it is for me though, I believe I say it somewhere on a thread about digital purchases ), would it not be ironic that it was rarely made an issue whenever the argument between two HD consoles broke out?

Kinect with every system smh. And I obviously have them to thank for the EyeToy polluting every system too with PS4. Good job on shitting up the industry just that much more, Microsoft.

You get to play the game within seconds of the installation process. Afterwards you can resume and suspend multiple games from your HDD.

Sony needs to be really worried if they don't offer the same capability. If on PS4 you have to switch game discs and you don't on Durango, it's a big advantage for MS in terms of user experience.

That sounds epic.

For all the people wondering about how space issues will work with required installs, it's possible that if it runs out of space, it'll remove the least recent game and installs the new one.

So if two years after launch, you get home with your new copy of Halo 9, but only have 3GB of HDD space left, it'll be like, "You haven't played this launch Durango game in 18 months" and delete that.

And if you ever want to play it again, it's not that big a deal, since it installs in the background, and the game starts a few seconds after putting the disc in.

Ya its weird. Like less than a handfull of games but suddenly EVERYTHING is 25 + gigs.

So you doubt games get larger with time and in fact typically take a jump up when a new gen starts? Or you think the lack of the 360's 6.8GB disc is still going to restrain devs and keep games small, even know the amount of RAM is 16x and discs are 50GB? Wishful thinking?

Well and also if games all suddenly instantly bloat to 25 gigs you can still get 20 on a 500 giger and thats if everything is installed to the HD and they don't use some kind of last use system.

Yes thats exactly what I meant when I said suddenly. Of COURSE.

I have a ton of blurays/dvds I haven't seen yet, but 90% of the time I watch something on netflix because its right there, with a couple of clicks its playing. ( I HATE how long the netflix or any app on the 360 takes to load up. Hate.) I hope the 720 has these already in memory.

Yes, I will.
I live in an area with constant connection issues. And I mean CONSTANT. Having an always-online console is not much of an option for me. I can't change internet providers, either.

I don't play online too much now because of it. Why would I buy a console that I can't honestly work with half of the time?

There are lot of XO (user experience and measureable outcomes) that MS, Sony and Nintendo looks at that Gaf don't even think about.

I bet MS and Sony managers have meltdowns over XOs that the other platform provides.

If the OS for a console takes 3 seconds to switch to versus 1 for the other, that's huge win for the faster console.
If downloading a demo takes twice as long on one console than the other, that's huge for the faster console.

If one console eliminates game disc switching, that's really really huge win in terms of XO.

Kinect with every system smh. And I obviously have them to thank for the EyeToy polluting every system too with PS4. Good job on shitting up the industry just that much more, Microsoft.

Lol it's MS's fault now for what Sony does on their system?

So I am lttp here. From what I understand, installing a part of the game will become the norm next gen for both consoles. Unlike entire game install on 360, it should work the same way as it does on PC and PS3, i.e. partial installation of data based on priority of repetition of access.

I thought people understood that the days of putting the disc in the tray and simply playing are pretty much over if they want to enjoy higher fidelity with mitigated pop ins and shorter loading times (if not completely seamless).

Any way, anything else going on here (as aforementioned, I am LTTP)?

I can't wait to see people's reaction to the hardware reveal. Crow shall be ate by all races and genders.

So I take it that 1.2TF GPU, 8GB DDr3 and 8 core Jaguar CPU have all been revised and updated. Otherwise a ban should be mandated.

Lol it's MS's fault now for what Sony does on their system?

Of course! Don't you understand, before I put the blame on Sony for something I don't like, I choose another company because that's way easier.

edit: sorry I am snarky today but some posts are really weird today to me personally, honestly.
