Whatcha Been Playin': GOTY Contenders Edition

The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom
Likely my GOTY, a near flawless mix of traditional Settlers gameplay with European boardgames. Anyone who's a fan of either owes it to themselves to buy this. Oh, and it's gorgeous with a great soundtrack to boot.

Project Gotham Racing 4
Fun racer, love all the weather stuff and the non-night cities. Definitely one of the better 360 games I've played. Also, I want more racing games to include the Caparo T1.

Mega Man & Bass (GBA) ... never beat it with mega man before
Warioland: Shake It ... gonna trade this towards smg2
Resident Evil REmake ... on 4th playthrough - chris/normal

This is like the 5th time you've nearly sold me on this game. I seriously hope this gets in on this year's Steam sale.

Red dead for me at the moment, loving the diverse missions, the scenery and the overall quality of the game.

I think Fallout New Vegas will be a strong contender at the end of the year tho.

Finally started MGS4 last week. I just started chapter 3 and I'm loving it. The boss battles in MGS games are always interesting. After this it's on to SMG2. Can't wait!!!!!

I just got my hands on Read Dead Redemption and 3D Dot Game Heroes..so those are pretty much i've been playing right now :D

I've been out of classes for about a week, but haven't been able to play any games. Luckily(?) the novelty of me being back in town has worn off and I'm not going out every night :lol so I'm finally digging into some

I'm about 4 hours in, and I am loving it. If it weren't a remake, it would easily be my game of the year.

I also finally found a complete copy of ICO, so I'm going to start that soon. I hope I don't forget though because as soon as my GOTY arrives in the mail, I doubt I'll be able to get to it for awhile....

Just finished the incredible Alan Wake a couple days ago, started playing Red Dead Redemption but after the initial amazement period, it started getting very repetitive and boring, so I stopped and I'm thinking of selling it. Now I started a God of War trilogy run (never played any of them, playing the first one right now, so so so so awesome) and after that it's Super Mario Galaxy 2 time.

tl,dr, or to answer to topic's question:

God of War I (from the ps3 collection) :D

The first RTS that's got me playing online.

I'm quite enjoying the StarCraft 2 beta, despite that I've traditionally hated player vs. player RTS matches.

Monster Hunter Tri - Finishing up. Awkward thing to say about a new Monster Hunter game!

Red Dead Redemption - Haven't gotten to put near the time into this that I want to.

Mega Man 10 - Finished up, I've gotten really bad at these. :lol

In an ongoing effort to shrink my massive backlog due to me creating a new gamertag recently, I've been playing:

Mass Effect
Amazing game with some very significant issues.

  • The framerate is terrible
  • The main story is too short
  • The conversation options all being in set places based on their Paragon or Renegade alignment make thinking about what you're going to say useless if you want to play a set route
  • The side mission planets are bland and uninteresting (except the skyboxes which are goddamn beautiful)
  • The Mako has no weight to it and controls like ass
  • It's far too easy to become a god by pouring points into Fitness early on for Immunity
  • The shooting feels pretty crappy
  • Texture pop-in is annoying
BUT

The game has some of the most likeable characters I've ever seen in a WRPG, the story is massively immersive and well told, and it has kept me playing for at least 8 hours a day every day that I have played it. This alone redeems almost all of the above faults.

I've since beaten ME1 and move onto

Mass Effect 2
Hoo boy... I'm not sure how I feel about this game. Plot-wise, it's as sound as the first, if not a little disjointed in some places, but, it's just such a different game. Now, the shooting feels great, and the weapon and armour systems are streamlined (still can't decide whether I like or hate this). The additions of stuff like the Captains Cabin and all of the decorations are absurdly pointless, but harmless

I'm also not that big of a fan of a lot of the characters. Jacob, Miranda, and the old crew members from ME1 are the only ones that I really like all that much, and Jack is possibly one of the worst ideas for a character I've ever seen. Also, what is with Zaeed? some crazy weirdo wearing Isaacs armour from Dead Space? who the hell thought he would be a likeable guy?

I think my issue with this game is that I no longer feel like I'm playing an RPG as much as a 30 hour long shooter with conversation options. Sure, some of the stuff in ME1 was pretty complex or annoying, and the equipment system was pretty terrible, but this game feels less like it's streamlined it, and more like it's just removed a ton of content from the RPG section and dumbed down the rest of it.

I don't know though. I'm just about to go recruit the Assassin, so I may get more used to it (and playing ME1 so close to it can't have made the massive changes between the two games as seamless as they could have been)

Final Fantasy XIII - Easily my game of the year so far, just finished the main game and now I am going to start on all the extra missions and maxing out the Crystalium.

Mario Sunshine/Galaxy: I just finshed up all 242 stars in Galaxy so I could say I was done before Galaxy 2. But I kept hearing the both sides of the fandom talking about Sunshine which I had never really played so I decided to try and run through as much as I could before Galaxy 2 arrived.

Bioshock2 and Dragon Age, still working my way through both of these.

Bayonetta/God of War III, couldn't stand either of the main characters so I gave up and sold off both the games.

As I said I am eagerly awaiting Galaxy 2, but I am also very excited to sink my teeth into Alan Wake since I haven't had time for that game yet.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

Holy shit this game can be terrifying. Just finished the underground part in the Dark Valley. The entire section only had a few monsters, but I had the feeling I was about to be jumped every moment.
My favourite moment was just traversing an abandoned train yard area during dusk, overburdened with loot. I kept running into packs of mutants dogs that would swarm and kill me. When it became dark, I was too terrified to proceed as I couldn't see a damn but still heard the dogs roaming. So I climbed on top of a roof and went to sleep until it was light. Back on the ground, I was soon ambushed by some mutants and just ran like hell, with mutants on my tail and past some bandits. I was so relieved when I encountered a friendly patrol.
God I hate mutants.

Finishing up new super mario bros wii and sakura wars 5. And playing lots of super street fighter IV online.

Also got myself a new shiny DSI XL. So i'm probably going start getting back into infinite space and SMT SJ.

Final Fantasy XIII - had enough for now, post-game and set up for quick "toise termination", but now going back to an old friend...

Lost Odyssey - looking forward to getting back to it, was running around a tougher optional dungeon when set aside for FFXIII. They got a lot right with this one save an exasperating stretch of contiguous cutscenes in disc 3 and iffy character design (especially main Kaim). But snarky everyguy-magician Jansen and his personal evolution--especially with
Ming
--is a high point. And among the immortals I tend to lead with unique swordswoman Seth.
