White male lead in the spec script Disney bought for the live action remake of Mulan

Who should play the lead character and true hero in Mulan's live action movie?

I put courage in quotations because as a Hollywood film it would be pretty "brave" to make a big budget non-while all Asian film according to classic Hollywoid standards. Of course, I use quotations because it's not actually brave because it should be standard procedure. It was tongue in cheek.

Memoirs of a Geisha. Which people still got pissed about because they basically pulled every Asian actor they could get, no matter what nationality they were, for a film that should have been distinctly Japanese.

No one doubts that changes will be made from a spec script to the final version. The reason why people are speaking up now is because we want to make sure that the RIGHT changes are made, and that Disney produces a final product that represents Asians and Asian Americans in a positive, progressive manner. We don't need your white savior character, thank you very much.

I'm all about making sure we're not represented just as jokes...but this entire blogpost was agenda pushing deliberate lies to try to start a storm on the internet to get him some hits even though he actually knows better.

They want to speak up...a year and a half after the script was bought, after multiple script rewrites have been done, after new writers were brought in to rewrite the script and have done so already once, and after they changed the character to an Asian character already.

http://www.vulture.com/2016/10/fans-dont-want-a-mulan-with-a-white-male-lead.html

and a source close to the film tells Vulture that, just as fans hoped, the film will indeed feature an Asian love interest. "The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film," the source says. "Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.

What it really says is that the person who leaked it is no longer remotely relevant in any meaningful way to the production, because if they were, they might not be going off of 18 month old information. The amount of deliberate misinformation is staggering.

To borrow the truth from BronsonLee

You know I'm not actually talking about you here right

The callback is amusing but this whole thing popped off because of a guy with an agenda who should know better, but morphed it around to suit his blog

If they are gonna do a mainland Chinese cast then have them speak Chinese and use English subtitles for full authenticity. But of course Disney isn't gonna do that so the right thing to do is to at least have some Chinese Americans.

Do we even know this is the final script? It's possible they're rewriting it. It's not like Disney hasn't done that before.

it isn't the final script (it is a year and a half old pre rough draft) - in fact, the person who wrote the blog post probably knew that the character had already been changed to asian by this point. Vulture (see earlier posts in thread) already has sources on this.

Yup so cast Chinese Americans if they are going to speak major, major parts in English. Or else they'll have to cast Hong Kong Cantonese because not very many mainland Chinese are going to speak fluent English.

Hong Konger usually have heavier accent than say foreign students from Taiwan. It has to with them learning accented English at early ages. Kind of like Indian accent. Mainland actors' English vary greatly on case to case basis.

You know Disney can cast Jay Chou. He has been in Hollywood movies and he speaks ok English.

Aren't like 95% of all Disney movies cast with white leads (including voice actors)? They're absolutely awful with casting non-whites in the lead role. This one is just more obvious because of the source material. Where have you people been for everything else Disney releases? :/

Knowledge is power, guard it well
Matt Damon is already in China to defeat the dragons, he can stop by Mulan's place when he gets done.

What the FUCK? This is actually disgusting.

Fake edit: oh, it's an outdated script and the white dude character has been axed? Thank god. Hopefully the part about the male love interest being the one to defeat the antagonist is wrong too.

Mulan was one of the best Disney movies. They better not fuck this up.

Is it too early or hipster of me to say I'm already sick to death of Ken Bone? Why does the Internet have to run everything into the ground?

So was this spec script more like self-insert fanfiction? "And then Mulan meets this handsome forty-something foreigner with blue eyes and her heart thrums in her chest. This is the moment she's always waited for, her one true love! Scott, the chiseled writer/trader, the hunk of her dreams. She didn't need a man, but she now desperately wanted one."

I wonder how big the pool of aspiring Asian-American actors is in Hollywood. It's gotta be tiny, considering they have virtually no opportunities at all.

Would it be farfetched to say there are under 100 Asian-American actors total in Hollywood?

I hope they cast some unknown Asian-American actors instead of the same 4-5 that are cast in every Asian role.

It absolutely isn't the final script. When they announced the movie, they stated that they already had writers re-writing whatever script this person has read. The issue here is that people are assuming that because they bought this spec script, they want to keep that aspect of it, which no one except the people that work at Disney can actually answer.

Except that the spec script was apparently written by women.

How could they realistically marlet this in China if the white guy is a love interest unless they will still do the thing were they don't really touch each other

Just dropping in to give Disney a stern warning to not fuck with my childhood.

Mulan, and everyone in Mulan were not white people.

Which is another reason this story never made any sense the way the original source leaked it. For me to believe that Disney was going to keep that aspect of the spec script, I'd have to believe that they didn't care at all about the Chinese market, even though they said they're specifically looking to cast a Chinese woman as Mulan.

Well we got the White Castle Asian dude, and the stereotype Asian in Hungover and...Lucy Liu.

Everyone needs to relax. These are spec scripts - ones that are pitched to film studios by writers in the hope they get made.

Disregarding all the racial stuff, Disney is not going to make a movie called Mulan and not have Mulan be the leading character.

Half of GAF should collaborate on a spec script for a "Chicken Little" remake, I think.

Off the top of my head of Asian American actors and actresses with some kind of recognition:

John Cho
Kal Penn
Tim Chantarangsu aka Timothydelaghetto
Jonathan Park aka Dumbfoundead
Lucy Liu
Chloe Wang, er, Bennet
Olivia Munn
Randall Park
Ken Jeong
Constance Wu
Steven Yeun
George Takei

Slight recognition:

Kevin Wu aka kevjumba
Justin Chon from 21 and Over
Vincent Rodriguez III
Will Yun Lee
Jay Park
Daniel Wu

Without cheating and going on wiki, that's 18 Asian American actors and actresses. That's... Not good. Some from my list are from youtube who have moved on to an acting career (or some sort of an acting career). I'm sure I have missed plenty of other people from youtube and in hollywood.

Would it be farfetched to say there are less than 100 Asian American actors? I hope not because if there are that is just disheartening for aspiring young Asian American's who want to get into acting.

Why do they need to be American?

I swear... this is some repugnant bullshit

Can't say for Hollywood alone but I think there's at least 100 if you count T.V. too. Here's a list of Asian American actors who debuted on a new fall show.

In the end, I believe they could probably get away with an entire leading cast of non-asians except for ONE spot, who will probably be the "Seinfeld Four!" guy (who's essentially in any movie where they needed an chinese presence).

Hence, I again encourage Scarjo as Mulan.

yea i jumped the gun a little bit and honestly didnt know what spec script means other than its like a first script? and didnt bother to look it up cause its 1:40 am and im laying down reading a gaming forum

however, im not wrong about hollywood just cant have an asian lead in shit

TV has come around in the last few years, when it comes to asian americans. Hell, fresh off the boat is the biggest example of this.

when it comes to asian americans and white washing or not including, its mostly been hollywood.

my point being, bringing up tv shit is side stepping the argument

I hope Lucy Liu is Mulan and Ken Watanabe is Li Shang.

ew both way to old.

thats how bad the asian actor recognition is. can only think of old actors in previous works because new young asian actors cant get a gig

Eh? Not sure if you're joking but... As if we didn't have enough drama when several ethnic Chinese were cast as Japanese in memoirs of a geisha. You want to cast a Japanese as a Chinese general? Do we all look the same to you or something.

honestly I have no issue with this concept. As long as asians, whether american or not, get work. It would be great if they were the same exact nationality as what the script asks, but for me whats most important is that, racially they are the same. its like Christian Bale being Batman. Nationality wise it's incorrect, but racially it's fine according to how hes written. Baby steps. Lets actually get asian actors in the roles first cause we cant even do that!

with that said, and as I said, those 2 actors are way to old for these parts

Not really sure you are limited to Asians in America, where there are a lot more Chinese American/Canadian/Britain/Australian already in Asian who are established star.

why people be forgetting my boy Ki Hong Lee?
Hes literally like the only young asian american male actor working in Hollywood.

all the other asian american males (the very few of them) are like over 40.

There's no better Asian actor in existence than Ken Watanabe for portraying ancient generals and businessman.

Yes, surely things like language, accent, and more subtle racial features don't matter, because all Asians are the same. Thanks bro.
