Is it Opera?

I love Opera on my Mac, but the Wii browser was bad. And don't even get me started on the DS browser. (I think it might still be loading a page right now!)

It's not Opera. It's using something webkit based (looking online, it seems to be Netfront-based), but I forget who the provider is.

However, I should really point out that the Opera browser on Wii has to fit all of Nintendo's particular requirements into 88MB RAM (maybe 64MB, as I don't really know if it can directly access the memory on the graphics chip). While I know that it's technically possible to, say, have a multitabbed browser within that envelope (I was installing a full Linux and KDE 3.x dealie with its multitabbed "Konqueror" web browser on a 48MB RAM laptop from the '90s as recently as half a decade ago), delivering an end-user friendly experience with a minimum of your typical browser issues (like, you know, crashing on arbitrary pages) is a pretty big hurdle to overcome when resources are slim.

Be aware that DNS address is gGoogles. If you want to stick with your isp's DNS servers substitute the bold with your ISPs dNS address.

I'm really happy that Google made 8.8.8.8 (so easy to remember!) an open DNS server like that. I was using 4.4.4.2 (or maybe it was 4.2.2.2) before, but that's really not intended for public usage.

Oh look, 3 days later and I see a lot less complaining. How surprising!

Not fair. I need more agita to help justify my decision to not buy this system. Come on, people, start bitching about something horrible and new! :|

Last night was my second large block of time spent with the system. After figuring out many of the features, doing a Wii to Wii U transfer, working on my friends list, figuring-out how to post and read messages.. I love it.

I love it. The controller is so damn pretty to look at; I have a relatively new 60" plasma, surround sound system, etc.. but my eyes kept wanting to drift down to that beautiful gamepad.

My mother-in-law leaves today, which means that when I get home, I have my largest chunk of gaming time yet tonight. This is going to be a long day.

(and more range research findings: at a distance of 25 feet, with the console set-up on the second floor, I had little difficulty up on the third floor balcony playing my gamepad. The sunset in the distance, tourists clop-clopping down my street in their horse-drawn carriages.. it was lovely!). :)

In my mad attempt to spin all Wii U commentary as negative, I choose to interpret the above as saying that everybody who got a Wii can no longer afford to drive a car and are therefore stepping down to century-old modes of transportation.

Miiverse sounds staggeringly good, and you reinforce my optimism about reaching all or most areas of my smallish house.

This. This. This. All of my casual gamer friends tell me they're buying a Wii U after seeing Wii games running on it. They said that because the TV said 720p everything looked clearer and HD. Ugh, people need to learn what upscaling means.

It really reminds of the people who used to buy an HDTV and plug in their 360's with composite cables and would claim how HD their consoles are.

In my three-person* gaming group, only one member has an HDTV**. He watches all content at 16:9 1080p. That is to say, most of what he watches are 4:3 television shows stretched horizontally to match a wider aspect ratio. There are mpeggy artifacts all over the place. I asked him why he doesn't just have it size up but keep the same ratio, and his response was along the lines of that he wants the picture to be bigger, that having the bars on the sides would be a waste of space. So now everybody looks slightly fatter than normal, but he's happy.

If the above paragraph makes you want to vomit, you'd better get a big bucket, as I suspect that there are a lot of people who think along these lines.

* Go statistically invalid sample sets! :D
** Two of us have HD consoles and the third likely will in the next year and change.

So Wii points card work in the new store?

Wii points only work for the Wii shop.

There are now Wii U/3DS eshop cards in stores.

Hopefully in the future all VC/Wii Ware stuff is integrated to eshop. And those titles can be used with pro controller and gamepad controller.

And that you can view 3DS/DSi stuff through the Wii e-shop.

And any purchases you make for those two systems would then be downloaded on to your 3DS.

That'd be cool...

Could be true but it's populating with more people than my friend's list.
Yeah, it populates with your friends, followers, and people from the game communities. I am super curious as to what the plaza would look like if you max out your friend and following lists.

Anyone download Assassins creed 3? I want to know the size as I am planning on getting in this evening.

It's actually cheaper for me in California to do Digital Downloads because there's no Sales Tax.

Is anyone actually enjoying their Wii U? I was going to make a thread asking this question but the front page is so cluttered with Wii U threads already, most if them boiling down to how bad the system sucks.

Well i for one am really enjoying it along with my 8 yr old daughter. She prefers us playing together in Nintendo Land, but im more into NSMBU. She's just not very good at it and doesnt really know the Mario Universe that i grew up with.

I've already spent more time with it than i did the Wii during its entire life cycle. I hated the waggle controls from the beginning. I love the game pad and its nice to finally see some HD graphics on a Nintendo console.

Surely I am not on an island out here by myself.

I'm loving mine, and my wife is enjoying it as well.

One question - Does the Wii U have a sleep mode like the Wii? If I am trying to turn it off with the game pad, pressing power once doesn't seem to do anything. Holding down power shuts it down. (Red light on the console.) Is there no middle ground this time?

I keep seeing a question on Miiverse about whether or not someone should buy NSMBU. It's a valid question, but the idea of owning a Nintendo console without a Mario game just kind of baffles me. Even when the Wii came out I had SMB1 on the virtual console.

Going over my Thanksgiving menu recipes on the gamepad browser, like a boss.

Retired my launch Wii last night after transferring. A little emotional *sniff* Now it lives in the Island of Misfit Consoles (aka my closet).

Yes...don't let the hate get to you. It's a fantastic system with a very clever online setup. The small issues I have with it will be fixed eventually.

I'm really enjoying the Wii U.

And I really dig the UI, just wish it was a lot faster. And I'm sure that will come.

The original Wii was slow between channels before, too.

Hell, my 360 had some nagging lag that was finally fixed in the last update. My PS3 friend's list lagged to load up just the other day. Wii U is particularly bad for this in a few parts but the speed is good where it counts. Miiverse and Friend's Lists are instantaneous for me now. I have my biggest issue loading up the main Wii U Menu and going into applications like Settings or the Wii menu.

Hmm, I sent info to an interested GAFfer who might set up their router to monitor what http server the Wii U is using to access Miiverse. It'd be interesting if Nintendo's query system were really simple and relatively insecure from a read-only perspective. I'd like it if the wiiubrew folk beat Nintendo to an off-system interface. :D

I'm enjoying the Wii U a lot. As console generations near the end I start losing interest in actually playing games. Talking about them, sure, I still do that. So, with this gen dragging on longer than any other I've found 2011-2012 to be really rough. And I'm happy to report the Wii U has got my love of playing games back.

The GamePad feels great in my hands, it looks good, and I surprisingly really enjoy the touch-screen. NSMBU is fun and more challenging than any NSMB game to date (which is nice). NL has been fun, in both single and multiplayer. Actually, what's really shocked me is how I'm enjoying going through the challenges in single-player. In NL, you have your obvious single-player only games, but even things like Metroid I found to be enjoyable on my own, something I didn't expect.

Overall, I'm thrilled I got a Wii U, and I'm actually way more into the system than I was the Wii. I can tell the Wii U is more my type of console. And, while I didn't care that I had one motion control console last-gen (to go with my PS3 and 360), I'm really happy I have a console with a built-in screen to go forward into next-gen.

I have a home cinema system with 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output to the TV.

If I plug the Wii U into one of the 3 HDMI inputs I wont have any issues with 5.1 sound etc right? Im assuming this setup should work perfectly?

since this thread is the most active Wii-U thread, I'll repost my question here:

-----------------------------
Anybody tried an intenso for a hdd?
I want to buy this one since its cheap, big enough and already comes with a y-connector. It should work, right?

And for those who already tried: Is it possible to use a partitioned hdd? Or will the Wii U 'claim' the whole hdd? If it's the latter, I have to buy another hdd, if its the former, I can use my Wii-hdd.

Googling found me some conflicting statements:

IGN writes this:
Drives that will be used by Wii U must be formatted by the system's Data Management system, meaning you can't use the drive with a PC without partitioning.
When you connect a drive to Wii U, you will have to format that drive for the system. Unless you partition, your entire drive will be dedicated to your Wii U.

google brought up this comment from gamefaqs:
Why must I sacrifice an entire 1TB when I only want 300GB for my Wii U?

What is true? Can I use a pre-partitioned hdd or not?

Just played a round of Rabbids land. I didn't have real high expectations, but overall, I'm not impressed. It may be going back to Gamestop. Might wait until my wife comes home to see if she likes it.

hi guys. i'm a total wii noob here. i have a wii u coming in the mail, but a big draw for me is to also play wii games that i missed. i don't need game recommendations - as there are plenty of lists online - but i have no idea what peripherals i need. forgive me.

i have a deluxe edition wii u. what peripherals do i need to play 4 player wii games like mario party, mario kart, super smash bros, etc? how many nunchuks should i get? i'm assuiming i should get at least one so i can play single player games like zelda. are there any major games that have requirements for multiplayer or co-op?

also, what controllers do i need to play 5 player wii u games (nsmbu and nintendoland, if they are 5 player lol)?

what controllers do i need to play n64 games? do i need wii or wii u pro controllers? classic controllers??? AHHHHHHHH

agh sorry, this is just so confusing. why the fuck are there so many controllers?! lol

I reccomend getting 4 wii motion plus remotes (some nintendo land games use this, along with a nunchuck). Mario Kart wii supports wii remote only, but if you want a little more tactile feedback with turning, you might want a nunchuck. For super smash bros, you can use 3 different kinds of controls: wii remote only, wii remote and nunchuck, and classic controller tethered to wii remote.

All you need to do is figure out how much you want to spend, wii accessories can get pretty expensive after you figure in all of the above.

No, I wouldn't say "it should work". Unfortunately, power isn't the whole issue with compatibility - my first drive I tried had power issues (even though it was a USB 2 drive, not 3). I fixed those by adding a powered USB hub, but the drive still didn't work - now I was getting an error from the Wii U (Can not format USB Device). The drive worked perfectly in Windows.

The only way to be sure a drive will work is to go with one Nintendo recommends, and that's a Toshiba Canvio or a Buffalo Drivestation.

btkadams: If you want 4 player Wii gaming, 4 remotes is a must. Go for the Remote Plus, though unless you were going to buy used that would be the default anyway. Nunchuks could vary, depending on what kind of multiplayer games you're playing, and even the preferences of the other people you're playing with. I'd definitely have at least 2.

Those same remotes/nunchuks will be fine for 5 player Wii games, too.

For N64 games on Wii VC you'd need either a Wii Classic Controller or Wii Classic Controller Pro to plug into a remote. Though it's pretty much a certainty they'll show up on the Wii U eshop eventually and be able to use Wii U Gamepad & Pro Controllers, it's just a matter of how patient you want to be.

The download took less than a hour for me. But you should go to Settings and change when your Wii U turns off(more than a hour if you don't have a fast internet)
When downloading things it mentions that it's temporarily disabled the auto-off feature. I set mine to downloading last night, it was finished and still running this morning.

Jeeze. Had this thing 2 days and I haven't used that button once. Why isnt Friend List an option from the main menu? So. Strange.
Yeah, definitely weird that Friends List and Download Status are Home Menu exclusives. Just seems to make sense that those options and the bottom of the main menu would mirror each other.

I'm a diehard Nintendo fan but:

It kills me that the company that put console fps games(Goldeneye64) on the map is not the company you think of when you think of console fps anymore.

Also I get the whole Nintendo wanting developers to use limited resources and squeeze out quality but their thinking is if the industry keeps focusing on graphics then quality will go down. Maybe 500 years from now with that model Nintendo will still be standing but I/we want games now.

Also I got the Wii-U and only got ZombiU, NintendoLand & Mario Bros. No way am I getting games that already are on 360 & PS3 only to have a waggle/touch-screen version now.

Ive seen the games and ideas Nintendo is planning with the WiiU pad and im excited but I fear my WiiU will be just like my Wii. Zelda, Mario, Wii Sports and then collect dust.

thank you so much guys! i haven't priced it out yet, but i think i will aim to have 4 wiimotes, 2 nunchuks, 2 wii classic controllers pros, and i'll get a wii u pro controller down the road.

First Nintendo launch I'm not even interested in. Feels weird.
