Received mine on Saturday morning. I think it was an advantage hearing about all the updating/set up issues as I knew exactly what to expect so it wasn't that big a deal to me. I had no major problems - Wi-Fi worked as expected and Nintendo Land was present in the box.
I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm someone who enjoyed a only handful of games on the Wii but appreciated it because it brought something different to the table than the PC/PS360- and that is exactly what I would like the Wii U to do.
Miiverse is probably the most impressive aspect. I am astounded that Nintendo have made such a great online feature. It makes the Wii U online community feel alive and something that I am very much a part of, and it does it with all the charm that one expects from Nintendo. I love the way you are greeted by having hundreds of Miis run down the screen and congregate around whichever game they are playing/talking about. I like that you can drill down and randomly select Miis, and view their posts etc. The 'Yeah-ing' system is great too, allowing the best posts to float to the top. It's always nice to see something makes you smile or chuckle when you turn the console on. The integration with Nintendo Land and NSMBU is excellent. This has something the PSN has never had, and something that Live lost long ago - the feeling of actually being part of an online community. Of course, there are still some major problems in terms of functionality and ease-of-use but this is a good starting point for Nintendo.
I've been quite impressed too by the graphics. Again, I wasn't expecting much but it is Nintendo in HD and that is enough for me. The New Super Mario Bros series has never looked so clean and colourful, while Nintendo Land also looks very sharp and runs well. I haven't checked out any of the current third party titles, and don't intend to, save, perhaps, ZombiU.
The controller screen is also surprisingly good. It provides a real alternative to playing on the TV, which I didn't initially expect. Yesterday while watching the NFL I was playing NSMBU during the breaks. Extremely convenient, especially with the (somewhat limited) TV controls (would like to see support for Onkyo receivers added). The controller is also pretty comfortable. It does not feel like I am holding something too different to a more traditional controller.
In terms of the gameplay itself with the game pad, Nintendo Land shows some very intriguing ideas - some work while some don't. I like the Zelda archery game and the Yoshi draw-a-route game while the wipeout-style racing game typified the central issue with having two screens to look at - not knowing which one to focus on! Any time a 3D racing game refers to a top down 2D view being the easiest to control you know there is something wrong. I'm definitely interested in future uses of the screen, the FIFA demo impressed me with all the on-the-fly management you can do during a game. It's just a shame that only one game pad can be used at any one time. Nintendo Land is a great pack-in title - far superior than Wii Sports.
Overall, I am very happy with the Wii U thus far. I did have fairly low expectations going in and was on the fence for quite some time, but my weekend with it has convinced me that there is a lot of potential to be had.
