Checking in here..
I've gotten to play around with Mario for about 6 hours or so before bedtime tonight. It is a delicious game. The uPad is a joy to use, and I've had no issues with the system since getting the updates done. Mario's going to keep me happy for a while, and then it'll be time for ZombiU.. which should, at the very least, be quite interesting.

From a quick ten-minute glance at GAF's Gaming side threads - outside of this fine thread - it's like I've played a different system today. What a shocker. :)

Oddly enough, some games seem to look better on the screen while others look worse. AC3 looks noticeably better to me, NSMBU and BLOPS2 looks a tad muddier, but only ever so slightly. The screen is overall pretty alright. The light bleeding is a bit much but other than that, I'm impressed with the image quality

So I take it's a downsampling of sorts then without too much compression, sounds nice.

I have a pretty nice plasma so the color is noticeably less vibrant on the gamepad. The movements also seem a taaaaad bit off for me for some reason, but I may just be sensitive to such things. It's still pretty damn sexy though, in then the end. I loved playing mario on it and would often sit right in front of the TV and look down at it instead. Also, it's appreciated even more so when you remember THERE IS NO CORD ATTACHED TO IT.

Seriously...that is amazing. And lag? Lol, what lag?

I feel the same way. I played 4 hours of Warriors Orochi and i had a blast. I know its a "bad port" but its still fun as hell.

The hell?

I also don't have many issues with day 1. I got a lot of enjoyment from Miiverse and ZombiU, as well as my shorter play seasons with Blops 2 and Nintendo Land. I just have to figure out why my Mii icon isn't appearing in Miiverse...

I'm really digging the Miiverse stuff in Mario and NintendoLand. It's fun to check out the community posts and the little notes on the Mario world map are neat. People are actually putting hints for certain levels which is cool. Can't wait to see what other devs and Nintendo do with it.

Gotta say I'm way more into the system than GAF seems to be. The pad screen is way crisper than I imagined (and I've had every iPhone and iPad to date), Miiverse has potential and it's just nice to finally have an HD Nintendo system. Lots of bugs to work out (the sluggish UI and no receiver control are the biggest for me) but I expected that at launch and hope they patch the issues.

Good stuff so far!

Lots of people seem to forget just how long the 3DS used to take to boot up its apps (for the best example, the eShop) After the big patch a while back, boot-up time for the eShop was cut to a third of what it used to be.

I fully expect there to be a similar patch for the Wii U in time.

I kinda miss the loading music, it's so fast now that you only hear a couple notes

Hey HT, nice to see you again. Now RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM THIS THREAD AS FAST AS YOu CAN! :)

inorite???

It was clearly composed as a piece and fit the loading time exactly...but now, its just cut short :(

Anyway, living in Japan at the moment. I'm enjoying looking at how the Wii U experiments are going over in America. I'm sure once it's out in Japan, it'll be a LOT smoother.

Menu Music is fantastic. Why oh why didn't they put as much effort into the NSMBU music?

Anyway still looking for video/walkthrough of the portable drive setup.

I've been reading about the WiiU Wii transfer utility, and how it deletes all the data off of the original Wii. Is that really necessary? I'm hoping you can still transfer Miis and save data via either SD-card or the WiiMote? Could you ever pass save-data along with a WiiMote?

Miiverse is amazing. It's so much fun looking at other people's impressions, sketches, etc.

I still feel like it could be improved though. Some things I hope are added are:

1. Most liked posts category
2. Tracking posts you've liked
3. Flipnote studios so we can have animated posts!!!

Can't believe Nintendo allowed drawings on miiverse. Ratio of penises:Yoshis will be too high. I can see myself locking my kids accounts to see only friends miiverse comments, which will be hardly any when diluted across all games

didn't niontendo say that the drawings etc would be monitored/approved?

Maybe they've developed some super accurate penis detecting algorithm?

Out of all the games I got at launch, I really regret buying AC3. It runs like ass and it's incredibly boring 1hr in... :-(

Aww.. poop!

No worries - whenever there's a Nintendo console launch, my ratio of NeoGAF-time::Nintendo-time spikes.

Interestingly enough, that gaming time increase includes a resurgence in playing time for older games in addition to the new ones. After farting around with RE4:Wii Edition this weekend, I'm thinking of spending a week or two with it once the launch window rush dies down.

Quick question about the system's Mii:

  1. I know you can import a Mii from the 3DS for this, but can that be any Mii on the 3DS or only the system Mii?
  2. Also is your Miiverse Mii the system Mii or can you choose any Mii to represent yourself online?

Unfortunately AC3 is a real slow burn and only picks up 5-6 hours in.

All drawings that are not friends ones are screened before being posted. Relax.

Don't know about the Wii U version specifically, but as an AC2 fan, I really did not enjoy AC3.

The Gamepad is amazing.

So much premature hate on this board, it's probably not surprising but always amusing.

I can't wait til the system is tweaked and more original games come out.

I don't even have an HD TV currently but I'm having a great time with New Super Mario Brothers U on the Gamepad and not even looking at it on my oldish TV.

I see tons of potential with this system.

There's a lot of work and effort to be done though.

yeah this Gamepad is very special also smaller than I expect and very comfortable

I am enjoying the Wii U more than I've enjoyed any other Nintendo launch hardware.

my TV is a 720p Plasma so to be safe for lag I went into options to set the Wii U at 720p because the default is set at 1080p

I have not had much time to look at the 2GB 48% slow RAM thread. After playing some games on this thing I don't really care :)

I got a nice little set up here for gaming and I've downloaded games from the eShop
Dat download manager in the background and the software installs it does

wish I could install my disk games now seeing NSMBU on my WiiU menu is something

I have not been able to move my icons as smoothly as my 3DS menu moved a few but others I keep launching the app. Must be doing this click thing wrong.

Anyway 5AM here and just lifting my head off my pillow reached for my Macbook to check NeoGAF

here right by my pillow is the Gamepad
Click the POWER button TV remote comes on I can click the red POWER button on the touchscreen to turn on my TV and click a white Play Wii U to turn on the console. Don't have to get off the bed :3

many little things to be really happy about!

I really want one.

I've preordered one from ShopTo since months ago.

I love the look of some of the games in Nintendo Land and I haven't played a "New" Super Mario Bros. game before, so I'm really looking forward to that.

Main question: Should I get one to play all the Wii games I didn't get to play on it? I really want to play SMG2.

Anyway I'll be getting one because of Pikmin and HD Zelda (oh that demo still makes me jizz thinking about it).

Time to post my stuff:::@!!!65w434!

Got my Wii U this morning at 9am Eastern Time. Went through that 50 minute update and immediately went to download both Mario and ZombiU.

While waiting, my brother and I played through all 21 adventure levels of Metroid Blast (which is bloody fantastic) and then tried out some Mario U (much better than Mario Wii - it's tighter and more interesting).

Then I went to work.

Then my roommates and I played some Zombi U, and wow is it good. Not perfect, has some interesting problems with it, but the atmosphere and sound, along with the desperate looting and need to carefully aim makes for one hell of a survivor ride!

Amazing time with my great new console. I love it. Metroid Blast showed me how amazing this concept is more than anything else.

from what i've played, the nsmb games aside from the very first one have been very good. nsmbu is probably one of the better ones.

have you ever owned a wii and its games? there's quite a lot to have missed if you never picked one up. i'd recommend super mario galaxy 2 over super mario galaxy about a thousand times over. any other genres aside platforming you're interested in?

so, someone correct me if I am wrong with my predictions.

USA LAUNCH = Loads of issues, consoles crashing, OS unstable, etc.

EU LAUNCH = A lot of the OS stability issues have been fixed with a new day one update.

JP LAUNCH = Flawless, of course. Cheers for beta testing, rest of the world!

The Wii to Wii U transfer is the greatest load time screen ever.

Seeing shit getting transfered has never been entertaining. Honestly, why the hell did they spend time making a fantasting transfer screen, complete with depth of field effects and whatnot, rather than polish up some of the more glaring issues the system has?

Priorities, I guess. "Gotta have dem Pikmin!"

Pretty much. US has most people "testing" it.

I was playing AC3 on it, and I didn't really care. So far the most polished 3rd party game out there?

I'd expect the fixes to take a few weeks more.

When you first turn on your EU WiiU you'll see a video message from Satoru Shibata thanking you for your purchase and he gives you a kiss on both cheeks. Mwah mwah. He'll then advise you to listen to the enclosed CD of Satoru Shibata's Whale Songs while updating the OS so the experience is a relaxing rather than stressful one.

I am pretty sure those two things aren't handled by the same departments.

Worth it :-)

I feel bad for people who got unlucky though with borked systems

So as far as the Wii to Wii U transfer is it true that you can't play any non-nes virtual console games without a classic controller?

Also, do the Mii's you transfer only work in Wii mode, and if so is there no longer a centralized spot like the Mii channel for Mii's that don't have accounts on the system?

If you have to create accounts just to use Mii's in things like Nintendo Land that's pretty big step back.

I think that's quite optimistic. It will probably take a bit longer for the OS fixes.

Yeah I owned a Wii up until 2009 when I had no money (student) and sold it (although for more than GAME usually buy them for).

I played Twilight Princess, SMG, Super Paper Mario, Wario Ware, Wii Sports & Resort and erm... Red Steel. I honestly can't remember the other games I played. I know I've got lots of other games to play.

I want to play SMG2, DKCR, Xenoblade, TLoZ:SS.

Any other glaring omissions?

And Wii games look a little bit better on Wii U, right?

Metroid Prime 3

I'm not expecting the other 2 consoles launch to be any better, tbh.

And my only real complain is the awfully slow OS.

Reggie should be imprisoned for these crimes against humanity.
Yeah!
(for being both amusing and politically relevant)

Now that I've discovered you can have game updates run in the background while you play I've stopped worrying about them too.
Can you do system updates in the background as well?

now THAT is a Movember stache!

You could always say they're mushrooms...?
Definite potential for some expert trolling here!

I'm glad there's positivity about the hardware, all the bad news about the account system has me pretty annoyed. I'm not sure if I will go digital only like I initially wanted. Is there any word on load time difference between disc and hdd?

Every time I get disappointed about the quality of the third party ports, I realize I'd be getting them on PC anyway. That and Monster Hunter / Wonderful 101 will be out in a few months :)

Id be over the moon if the OS speed issues are fixed for us by the 30th.

Right now that's the difference for me. A 10 to 15 second wait to load apps is a system breaking flaw, personally. I can't in good faith hand over £300 for a system that's doing that.

I dunno. If Nintendo have officially acknowledged this is a problem and conform theyre patching it within the next 2 weeks then that's fine for me, even if it takes them a bit longer to implement it, but I do need that assurance from them. I don't have 100% trust in Nintendo to actually sort this.

After replaying it recently, I've gotta suggest Zack and Wiki. It's going to hold-up really well over the years. If you like adventure/puzzle games, you owe it to yourself. This is one of those unique games only possible on the Wii, so it's a great relic of the era.

(And the sooner, the better.. it's still $35 on amazon, and I get the feeling that it'll be one if those games that'll be harder and harder to find as time goes by.)
