My bedroom is *just* out of range, sadly :(

It doesn't totally drop connection, but it's choppy enough to make playing from up there a fool's errand regardless. Alas...

The controller is too good to have unbelievable range.

I swear if you could play this thing anywhere in any house, it'd be godly.

I have found in my case that the range isn't as great as some have mentioned but it's still an amazing piece of kit.

If this thing was portable in the truest sense of the word, I'd never get shit done.

Someone make it happen.

There seems to be a lot of negativity about the system launch, with a lot of this coming from people who haven't even bought the system.

I just wondered, for those that did buy the Wii U, do you like it so far?

The negativity is coming from people who feel threatened and scared by a next-gen Nintendo console.

Yeah i think they missed an opportunity not having all that VC stuff on launch but i also can understand why. Let's just hope that stuff starts to roll out next month.

I am actually curious to see if they start putting up Gamecube stuff on the E-Shop, i think that would be pretty friggin rad.

Yeah I get why they don't want to make everything else look unattractive. But I mean that when it does roll out, it won't be connected to your previous Wii purchases (AFAIK) so if you want to play Super Metroid in Wii U mode, you'll have to rebuy.

Wii had like 500k - 800k units in all of North America for launch. This time around, Gamestop alone had 500k units nationwide. When you stock way more units than the last time around and it still sells out, that shows demand is pretty strong.

wii was the successor of gamecube, a system that failed hard

wiiu is the successor of wii, a system that is market leader

so yeah stronger sales are expected.
Gahiggidy, what's your gaming room look like these days?

is a nintendo fan not allowed to buy something else?

i thought you had to own all three consoles to have a valid opinion

the initial demand, yes. I don't see the continuing demand happening. The scalpers are also taking a huge chunk of the initial supply.

thats what people said bout the wii too.. just sayin

if nintendo goes near wii numbers i believe they can check the success box and go on to their next thing

Always, always, always run the game and let the system update it in the background, don't sit around and wait for patches.

So do you just press that 'launch software' thing?
Am guessing you can't do this for the system update before then installing?

To be fair nobody is going to go near Wii numbers this gen.

IDK - the other systems have ended this gen very high as well. Its possible for any of them.
We'll never see PS2 numbers again (the market has splintered) but Wii numbers seem believable.

But I've heard people saying they've experienced the system freezing/hanging when playing games sometimes, so what happens if it freezes while downloading the system update in the background?

When I brought my system home, I started playing right away, after about an hour of Mario, I decided to take a break and start the system update download, only to find out it was about 90% finished.

Always play your game, the system will do what it needs to do and you can install the update next time.

Maybe some people are a little disappointed that Nintendo stuck with an unforgivably archaic and insecure account system, had to deal with slow update servers just to access the online goodies for every game and the system itself, and that almost (if not) every third party port suffers from performance and/or graphical issues in comparison to their current generation counterparts.

Or they have an anti-Nintendo agenda. Who knows!

I'm still kind of pissed I need to use Wii Points to buy VC and WiiWare. No shops around me have Wii Points cards in stock, only 3DS cards. :(

This, plus the slow OS are the main reasons I'm disappointed. Although the speed of the OS has been getting faster now that launch is beyond us now.

I think it's a location thing because when i tried getting one in my city every single store was sold out and when i mean everyone i mean i called every single wal-mart, target, kmart, sears, toys r us, gamestop, EB and best buy within a 2 hour driving distance.

Luckily my aunt found one when she was out of town. People are selling them for $500-600 on craigslist and they are actually selling :-/ . Do i think the demand is as big as Wii? No, i don't know if we will ever catch a phenomam like that for a console again but i can guarantee once black friday rolls around and it hits holiday shopping season you will be lucky to find one. Late Nov-Dec is when everyone will be flocking to get these for family members.

Every outhouse, townhouse, doghouse, frathouse, flophouse...

Nice; that makes things much better. System deals with updates really well then.

Does anybody else's Wii U make a loud ass sound whenever you turn it on or put in a disc? Like the disc drive is spinning into overdrive?

Don't own; but the disc drive is a faster speed than any other system.

Stop making sense dammit!

Anyone know if this launch has been like the Wii in terms of supply and demand? I want one but the price is a turn off for me mainly because wife says no. I just think that the price may sway some parents to hold off at the moment. Reason I ask is my local wal mart still has them in stock which surprises me because the Wii launch was a sold out instantly.

Walmart is releasing consoles to the public that were unpicked up preorders. There will also be some available on Black Friday. If you really want one and don't want to deal with Black Friday BS then get one now. If you are fine picking one up sometime after Christmas it shouldn't be impossible. We don't really know if this thing is going to take off like the Wii yet. The Wii picked up steam after those that bought it at launch showed it to their families on Thanksgiving. It was that casual demographic that made things nuts.

Let me ask this question. Why would anyone buy the basic version over the deluxe version? At a price difference of only $50 and the deluxe version having Nintendoland included as well as a much larger internal memory and the stands I just can't understand why. If it's the color of the system then I guess that's hard for me to fathom.

Don't forget, the Deluxe also has the loyalty program for DD.

I am very positive about it. I like the hardware quite a bit. The gamepad is great; and MiiVerse is infectious. Excited to see where games go from here. It's just fun. I am happy with the purchase.

The Wii to Wii U transfer process was convoluted, but likely driven by how the Wii/Wii shop was implemented. Will not miss the Wii Shop.

Long term, it needs several OS tweaks. Long load times need to be fixed. The store is going to need some changes for usability ("view all" will not be a long term solution).

The freezing problem needs an urgent fix. Plus Jon Blow has it right - they are a big enough company that they need to figure out a way to make firmware upgrades not be potentially fatal to the hardware.

The part about NNIDs being locked to the console is terrible. I can't imagine it won't change.

I would think that anyone who wants to see the system thrive would get behind the changes that will be needed over time - the more usable, the more reliable the system is, then the better the chances it will be a great platform for the games we want to see.

Its the color of the system for me. The white just seems to work best on that Gamepad shape. I believe it would have been designed differently if the original color was black.

Oh, I've moved out of there a while back (folks needed the storage space). These days you'll find me in and out of youth hostels around the Baltimore area.

I guess some people want a white colored console (to go with Wii accessories), won't use the eShop, or don't want Nintendo Land. I'm not one of those people (deluxe owner here), but I can see why someone would want one if they wanted to save some money.

When I pre-ordered mine there were no Deluxes available anymore so that is my excuse. Nintendoland is the main thing I am missing out on, but I am sure I can pick a copy up for below $50 fairly soon.

Yeah, I would have been all over a white Deluxe bundle, but it's just too good a deal to pass up for a colour preference

Now that I have the system in hand, I realize my dream of having the TV remote function replace my Harmony One was pretty ridiculous. There's no way it could do everything I would want it to do (for one thing, I doubt there'll be a "Turn Xbox 360 on" function implemented anytime soon :P). Basically I will have to switch the TV/receiver on with the Harmony, then grab the gamepad and turn the Wii U on. Not the worst thing. And I suppose I can still play on the gamepad and change channels on the TV (although not control the volume). So it may still be a little useful.

I have been having some buyers remorse. I do admit I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and just play, mostly because the hours I have dedicated to play have been riddled with system and game patches. The OS has been atrociously slow. Highlight so far is that I played some of NSMBU, which is fun. The 5 minutes I spent so far with Nintendoland was convoluted and a bit of a mess. Hoping it gets better. Haven't decided what to pick up next, whether it be Scribblenauts (which I have always wanted to try), or just wait for Lego City Undercover, which my daughter really wants to play.

Yeah, it isn't able to interface with my xfinity cable box, so I cannot even change channels. It won't be something I use.

It gets better once you settle in with Nintendoland. Your first play will seem a bit overwhelming, but once you start unlocking prizes, getting familiar with the different controls, and even getting others involved (if possible) its really fun.

The soundtrack is top notch too.

I got my copy of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in the mail today.

I also bought Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess, and Punch-Out!!

Tons of great games I can play on the Wii U from the previous gen that I missed out on at cheap prices.

One of the great things about Miiverse that people aren't yet speculating upon is that it will be a real-time look at how popular any given game is. No need to dig into sales numbers, the Miiverse can tell you how well your game is doing relatively.

The OS should be called Galapagos, that giant prehistoric turtle, its simply a joke that using 1 gb for os and still so sluggish and unsophisticated.

Was thinking of re-purchasing Super Mario Galaxy 2, but it is still priced higher than most Wii games from what I've seen.

Absolutely.

I bought Xenoblade Chronicles months ago and I didn't even own a Wii.

I still want Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I beat the first one), Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, The Last Story ....

So many good Wii games to go back and explore.

The TVii Remote functionality is missing something rather basic and important: a '.' button. I can't change to *any* channels by typing numbers without that - you can't just type 22, you have to type 22.1 or 22.2. Seems yet another thing Nintendo never tested in the real world in this rushed-to-market system. I wonder if it's even possible to update the Gamepad firmware to fix it.

Works with mine. I have a Cisco branded box. My biggest complaint is that you can't see the numbers you are dialing on the pad whereas with a regular remote you have tactile feedback, so you can just look at the TV set.

---

What do you think are the odds that Nintendo will add a function to jump directly into a game from start-up? I imagine an option for when you hit the "tv" button that has a tabbed panel with icons of the game-disc in the system and any installed software. Tap the game you want and the system boots up right into the game, skipping the Wii Menu and wara-wara. Could this info be stored in the on-board memory on the Gamepad?

I am playing on a tv with one of the mini boxes. It has xfinity on the front and says it was manufactured under license of Dolby Labs. I don't see any other names on it.
