Disney probably expected more overseas, but close to $500M with 48% of that domestic is still pretty good. Oz's major problem was that it was too expensive.

And weren't there a shitload of production problems that couldn't be forseen, like actors having to leave halfway through

Worst multipliers for 2000s superhero movies (total after 4th weekend / opening weekend):

1. Elektra - 1.86x
2. Jonah Hex - 1.87x
3. Batman v Superman - 1.88x
4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 1.94x
5. Blade: Trinity - 1.96x
6. Hulk - 2.01x
6. Spider-Man 3 - 2.01x
8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 2.02x
9. Fantastic Four (2015) - 2.05x
10. Green Lantern - 2.06x

EDIT: It would seem that ya'll haven't seen this:

Not Disney, but a fantastic movie.

Would Disney want that level of controversy on their hands if they whitewash Mulan?

Why on earth would they whitewash Mulan

Unrelated to this stuff, I'm starting to get really tired of that whole whitewashing conversation in films. Where were ya'll when 21 did it

Mulan would totally be China bait if the live action adaptation ends up going forward. They won't white-wash it.

Hey man I'm just saying.

Not sure what I'm saying, but it's something.

You sayin nonsense! *launches tomatoes*

Yeah, the movie industry is way different than 1998 when it first came out. That could pull Ip Man level numbers or even higher, depending on how nationalist they make it

It seems people care more about fictional characters than real people.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Emma Watson + actual musical numbers = COUNT ME IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss. It's going to be awesome.

I'm also looking forward to Cruella played by Emma Stone. It's going to be great.

Edit: Bronson what happened to your eyes lol?

I rewatched the cartoon not long ago on Netflix and it is already darker than I remembered it being.
Now add:

Frollo as archdeacon
Quasimodo killing Frollo
Esmeralda and Quasimodo dying
Remove the gargoyles' humour and have them be part of Quasi's imagination

And you have the stage musical! Ripe for a film adaptation ;)

Oh man, just removing the gargoyles from the cartoon would practically make it a tough watch for kids. I'm surprised they even tried to adapt the story for a cartoon.

I'm going to guess that Dreamworks wasn't expecting the film to crawl to $500M WW when they invested all that money into Kung Fu Panda 3.

Did a quick check and found out it was a prequel about the Genie. But it was shelved after Robin Williams' death and no one can use his image or voice, both used and un-used material, for 25 years after his death (which will be August 2039).

http://www.avclub.com/article/disney-shelves-new-aladdin-movie-over-provisions-r-228204

So they might either take a completely different route with it or just put it on hold. Or have someone new as Genie.
I hope they just remake Aladdin instead of go the prequel route. That would be one of the best films for them to make live-action next to Pinocchio and Peter Pan.

Yeah... Kung Fu Panada underperformed comparatively to the last entries. At least it didn't plummet as much domestically, but international numbers are a concern.

The only franchise left I enjoy from them are Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon

Because no one wants to see what a live-action Flounder would end up looking like.

*shudder*

They're doing a Cruela DeVille movie? Why? Their 1996 version is perfect and Glenn Close in the best role of her career. It even shits all over the boring Cartoon version.

Dont get too greedy Disney. Especially that live action Pan...two decades of Pan bombs shows audiences don't want that shit.

You're getting an off-brand "based on the book" version of the Little Mermaid by Universal in the next couple of years.

They're more or less done with Madagascar, no?

I duno, I remember a fourth one being announced but I don't see it on Dreamworks schedule anymore, odd.

Every new entry outgrossed their predecessor so it'd be kinda odd if the put the franchise on the back-burner.

By uni? Boooo
i've yet to see any evidence that studios other than disney can competently handle live action fairy tales

I should probably watch the latter two at some point.

I thought Universal's Peter Pan movie from a decade ago had its fans.
