Holy fucking shit.

Where's Ryan Reynolds making mocking videos as Deadpool when you need him.

Honestly, someone should tweet him and ask why this isn't happening.
The movie is still in the theaters and some targeted at current events marketing could boost DP to the #1 R rated move spot. just need a second surge by reminding people they can still catch it in the theater.

and most of the best marketing for this movie wasn't even directly for the movie anyway, it was selling the Character of Deadpool.

So RR needs to make more ads, specifically aimed at poking fun at "other movies" for not being as awesome/successsful... while also poking fun at movies starring talking animals taking over the B.O.
oh w/ a mention of no movie in release in China as well.
gotta cover it all.

The Jungle Book was rated WHAT at RT and made HOW MUCH at the box office?!

Guys we know nothing about Thor 3 yet. Except that they said that it would be extremely important.

Already we have Hulk and Thor which will put it WELL above any standalone Thor movie. If it's actually good, even better. And then you've got the chance that as our duo travels the galaxy they run into, perhaps the Guardians of said Galaxy? Or maybe the first introduction to Captain Marvel?

Point is, we don't know. After Winter Soldier we definitely weren't betting that Cap3 would be projected for well over $1b.

Natalie Portman won't be in it either, so that's another plus.

I would LOVE to listen in on the WB executives regarding BvS over the last few weeks and just how fucked WB could be going forward outside maybe Suicide Squad. Giving Snyder and Goyer the keys to the DC kingdom was a mistake.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Just saw The Jungle Book; fantastic film, visuals were great though I wouldn't suggest the viewing for kids under the age of 7, it's quite dark at times.

Well, Goyer isn't involved anymore and Fantastic Beasts should make a shit-load to appease stockholders.

ERMYGERD!

Takes a lot more to negate the negative effect Snyder has. Owh I know, they'll just inform the shareholders that they're going to give Snyder even more IPs to work with, which should work out brilliantly.

Goyer + Goyer = Blade 3
Goyer + Nolan = TDK
Goyer + Nolan + Snyder = MoS
Goyer + Snyder + Terrio = BvS

Goyer is a bad writer, but he's clearly not the largest problem in the equation in terms of fan reception.

How involved was Nolan on Man of Steel?

I always figured he just kind of occasionally gave a wave of approval and wasn't actually that invested in the film, and that Warner just hyped his involvement to show a connection to the Dark Knight trilogy.

I do wonder if WB would rather have the story J K Rowling wrote for play in London that has the old gang and their kids. Although after Fantastic Beasts, that's probably going to get a film adaptation as well once the original actors are old enough. Not sure if having the first Fantastic Beasts based in the US is a draw or not, I thought part of its appeal for American audience was it's slight Britishness.

I know there were things he flat out told Snyder and company not to do, yet they did it anyway because Snyder. The ending for instance.

He wrote the original story outline with Goyer.

I don't know, Blade 3 is probably the worst out of those. Goyer + Goyer in an interview was magical though.

He gave general guidance and helped with intial story definition according to most reports. It wasn't heavy detail involvement though and IIRC actors noted he wasn't really around much for shooting, etc.

Couple of interesting elements I remember from some articles are that he disagreed with killing of Zod and felt it didn't fit Superman and his original direction saw Zod returned to the phantom zone at the end and that he suggested they pick a tone and stick to it vs chasing Marvel approach (I doubt he meant stick to a one note dour tone though).

So overall not huge involvement but more around the notion of a more "real world" take on Superman with a slightly more sombre tone. From what's been reported most of the controversial stuff is squarely on Snyder/Goyer and core team and doesn't come from Nolan. If he did oppose killing of Zod I'd agree with him. Not necessarily in an absolute sense (i.e. you can never have Superman kill) but at least as specific to MoS where it just didn't work and felt totally shorehorned in (although all big character beats in Snyder films tend to feel like that unless they come from existing material, he has no sense of character building at all).

Biggest news here is Barbershop 3 has a 92% fresh rating.

friday-damn-gif.gif

In the end....

Barbershop series > Friday series

The strength of the first Friday can't make-up for the pitiful sequels. Barbershop has been really consistent (I've not seen this third one yet, but as you noted, people seem to enjoy it a lot).

Today I learned that not only does a new Barbershop movie exist, it's already out. Wow. So that's the effect of cutting TV.

Barbershop ads were all over social media such as Facebook and Twitter (I think they paid Twitter to be a trending topic), and Ice Cube was all over terrestrial radio promoting it. Combined that with a still starved, still ignored, and very financially feasible demographic (Middle aged black women) and it was a given it would mostly make it's low budget back in its first week, typical of films of this type. What was surprising are the positive reviews (It's the highest of the trilogy whose last film was released in 2004 and the other two movies were certified fresh.).

I might be wrong on Barbershop having a steep drop if the good word of mouth helps it out.

I would not worry about Barbershop having a steep drop. Films with a predominantly black cast perhaps more than other films live or die on WOM. Don't believe me? Look at The Perfect Match, a by-the-numbers romantic comedy that would have been a minor success had it been released four years ago. Now in the post Best Man Holiday era it can't scrape up ten mill. I truly believe it's because of word of mouth.

People were lined up for The Jungle Book. It was actually sold out Saturday, causing me to catch it the next day. It deserves the success. Great movie!

I think it depends on where you're at. When I was back home in Chicago, I saw a shit load of ads. Now that I'm back in Iowa, I haven't seen one and only 3 people including me in the theater.

The first Barbershop movie was alright, the second I barely remember but I remember thinking it was ok. Never really watched the spin off.

Say what you will about Cube, but he can be a decent writer(he is the writer of Friday and Barbershop, isn't he?). It's a strange comparison, but he's better at writing these type of movies than Tyler Perry. Whose Madea stuff aside seems to have taken over the non-gangster mostly black cast movies since after Cube's efforts.

I watched Jungle Book yesterday, that was a great movie!

The voice cast is amazing, hell, the kids at my theater were terrified of Shere Khan!

Disney has just been killing it lately. Make me wish John Carter had another shot.

For those interested in its demise, there's a good read on it called "John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood". Think it's free to check out for Amazon Prime members.

I just came back from The Jungle Book. I thought it was good, not great, but miles ahead of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

The only real missteps were casting ScarJo as Kaa and
having Christopher Walken sing "I Wanna Be Like You"
(very minor, non-plot-relevant spoilers).

Well, after the latest Warcraft trailer, China probably really is the only hope for that movie to not lose massive amounts of money.

$7M for the Jungle Book on Sunday. It's a family skewing film, so most of its business is going to be on the weekend.

BvS made $650k yesterday (-56% from last week). Zootopia made $553k (-29%). Streams will cross on Friday.

Just got back from Jungle Book and it was great. Miles more entertaining than Oz, Cinderella and Maleficent

Yup, at the latest. They're just $39k apart today, after Zootopia got a 38% Tuesday bounce and BvS got 23%. Zootopia will easily top it this weekend.

Any indication about how Jungle Book is tracking? Looking like a ~$60m weekend with these holds.

That's its first sub-million day, right?

Took 24 days for that to happen. Just about 3 1/2 weeks.

To compare:

Zootopia: 40 days above $1mil daily.
Deadpool: 39 days
The Force Awakens: 45 days
Kung Fu Panda 3: 24 days
Allegiant: 13 days
10 Cloverfield Lane: 18 days

Posting my impressions for Batman vs Superman and Jungle Book here.

Got dragged to watch BvS by a friend. I told him I would only go during discount tuesday because I heard the movie sucked and I didn't want to spend a lot of money if it was going to be a subpar experience. He was okay with it so we went yesterday.

It's not a 2/10 movie, but it's not much better either. I rank it above Fan4stic, but below even TIH and MoS, which is a very low bar. I would say in line with the old FF movies? I think that sounds fair. Right off the bat, I'm thinking "what the fuck" when Bruce Wayne with his ~250 IQ goes running into falling debris from this huge building that has just fallen. Now, I may be wrong, but Wayne is not a super human like Cap America or an alien like superman. AFAIK he is all human and I would think a regular person wouldn't go running into certain death, let alone a genius, but I digress. I don't like the casting. Thought Eisenberg would make a good Luthor, I was wrong. Cavil is not a good superman. The bad guy from Sam Jackson's Die Hard is not a good Alfred. I don't like Affleck as an actor and I hated him as batman. I like the movies he has directed despite him being an actor in them, so maybe the upcoming batman will be good. Doomsday felt rushed and they already killed the guy (side question, is doomsday created like that in the comics?). The fight scene in his dream was lame as all hell, but the Arkham fight scene recreation was kind of cool, except when Affleck was actually talking. Also since when is his mask (non armor), bulletproof? I didn't see batman kill anybody except in his dream, so not sure why people are complaining about that? Of course I might have missed something.

Is wonder woman supposed to speak english with an accent? Real question. Gal Gadot was okay, but I think WW is hard sell. She came out of nowhere with her introduction and I'm like okay, cool, but no idea what kind of powers she has. She can lasso people? Is it a special rope? The movie kinda assumes you know what her powers are. She is not as big as she was in the 70s and people don't really know her. A lot are still very misogynistic. I saw a youtube video the other day (I think it was Kevin Smith's channel) and this woman was complaining about Elektra tossing guys around because it's unrealistic. I'm thinking, you're watching a world where a blind guy kicks all sorts of ass and a psycho maniac with ptsd kills whole gangs by himself and you're complaining about that? Random question, why does aquaman need to hold his breath underwater? With a $250M budget, you'd think they would not make it so obvious. I also only knew who Flash was out of the whole 4. Final thoughts, I think there's more wrong with this movie than just the direction, it's easy to blame Snyder, but the writing and the script are flawed, the casting is flawed, the cinematography is flawed, etc. Just reshooting with more comedy or replacing the director would not have made this a good movie IMO.

My niece and my nephew dragged me to see Zootopia again on Sunday, and then today they wanted to see Jungle book. I have a soft heart and can't say no to them, so we went.

I already mentioned what I think of Zootopia and how it's the best Disney animated movie since probably alladin. The rewatch value is great, and the kids of course loved it. One thing I wanna add is that the reason I believe the song is not more popular is because the way Shakira sings. Not saying it would have been as popular as "Let it go", that's a tall order, but I believe when she says 'everyzing', it kinda kills it for me. Anyways, movie was just as enjoyable as the first time I watched. Not gonna write much here, everyone should watch this movie.

Didn't know what to expect for the jungle book. I kinda don't remember the movie and never read the book. We sat in the very front row because the movie theater was packed. The worst seat in the house, my neck still hurts. I think the movie definitely has scary moments for kids, especially when Kaa is about to eat Mogli. Speaking of which, I didn't like Scarlett Johansen as the voice of Kaa, I don't know why, just didn't do it for me. I think the kid was a decent actor, not a breakout star or anything, but definitely good and I'm glad they went with an indian boy to play the part. Shere Kan is definitely great as the villain and the part where he has the wolf pups just shows that he is a threat not only because of his size, but also because of his whole attitude and demeanor. The orangutan's part kind of took me out of the experience though. That was mainly due to Christopher Walken's voice. Too recognizable and it's the same problem I had with Ultron in Avengers AoU. It's not a deal breaker, just something that takes me aback and say, "hey", I know who is voicing that. I think the final scene with Shere kan was definitely good as well. I know some complained about the fire or whatever, but it set up for the finale, which was enjoyable to me. Favreau is a great director. I would like to see what he has in mind for his "Magic Kingdom" movie, not even sure what the hell that would be about.

As of Tuesday's numbers, Batman v Superman has fallen behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in per screen average, $228 compared to TASM2's $230.

How many screens is it going to lose this weekend?

BvS and Zootopia both lose about 400 venues this weekend. Hardcore Henry is dropping 2496 theatres this weekend, which is the second biggest theatre drop of all time, missing first place by 27 venues.
