Anecdotal note: It looks like it's going to track down a bit form last weekend nationally, but I thought I'd note how it's playing in my town.

I live in a small town, and ~nine years ago an eight screen theater opened in the next town down the highway (10 minutes away); combined the area is around 30k people. The theater does decent business but is never really full. I saw TFA there during a matinee last Saturday with my wife, and it was 2/3 full which was huge for them. The only time I've seen it really packed was for the Avengers opening weekend.

I just got back from a showing, and it was bonkers. I went to the same time showing as last week, and the theater had maybe ~10 seats left by the time it started, on the sides of the front row and single seats dotted around (I arrived 30 minutes early and had a good seat). It probably sold out, but some groups couldn't sit together and so went back for a refund / later showing. When I left, there was a line for the next showing and people pouring in. Never saw that even on Avengers' opening weekend, nor for Avatar.

The audience spanned four generations, lots of large family groups were clearly going to a movie together after gathering for Christmas. All the chatter I heard in the half hour before the film started was from people who had not seen it yet, but had heard about it. The hardcore came out last weekend, families this weekend.

Totally crazy for a second weekend.

I know this has been talked do death, but I can't really see the younger generation being introduced to Star Wars for the first time via TFA liking the OT nearly as much as the new film. It's an old movie series. As old as Ben Hur would have been to most of us 30+ GAF members when we were kids.

I don't appreciate this post.

I don't appreciate this post at all.

I already felt old. Now I feel really old.

Saw Star Wars again tonight. Theater was busy but was about on par with previous big release weekends. I was surprised our showing wasn't sold out but it was plenty packed.

I was actually really disappointed in the audience. No where near the reactions from people I saw last week. Kind of ruined my experience a bit... well that and the movie was kind of hard to sit through a second time.

I mean, they're good movies. If they like that, I don't see why not :p

But yes, I can see it happening with many people. I think a similar thing might happen with Fury Road.

Elk Grove California...tried to watch Star Wars today for the 2nd time.
Every show time was sold out 4 hours before they started.

I need to buy my tickets a day in advance for 2nd weekends??? Smh....

Vader in Rogue One seems like it would be a no brainer, though one could also assume he doesn't get involved in the whole Death Star plans theft issue until his underlings have already lost them and he has to take matters into his own hands.

I think it's obvious how the movie will end though.

Rebel thieves burst out of some base somewhere flying away triumphantly in a ship that's definitely not trying to be the Millennium Falcon.

Empire underling reports to some command room somewhere and approaches Vader.

"Sir, the rebels have escaped with the very secret plans."

Vader turns, watches the So-Not-The-Millenium-Falcon ship escape into the sky. The camera pulls back and Vader lifts his hands and cries . . . "Noooooooooooooooooo!!!"

Queue fanfare and credits.

Sure, but I the concept is the same. Some people introduced to the series with Fury Road might not like the old ones.

The original Mad Max doesn't hold up nearly as well as Star Wars, so probably. Compared to Fury Road specifically it was low budget and sort of boring (as far as action goes) in addition to it being old. I haven't seen The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome in over 20 years, so I can't really judge those.

I was mainly talking about Road Warrior. Mad Max 1 is hard to digest no matter what, but Road Warrior has a kind of similar feel to Fury Road.

Following the box office on this movie is fascinating. Its incredible that one man's space fantasy franchise from 1977 really is the modern day cross generational mythology and people literally cannot get enough of it.

Side note my mom saying she didn't understand why
Han's son wasn't named Jacen
crackeded me up. I must be in a tiny minorty of people whose mother knows the EU.

Yeah the first viewing was the best because of the crowd reaction. I know it shouldn't but it affected my enjoyment of the film lol. The second was almost as good though because of being able to pay attention to the smaller details.

Having just seen it for the first time over the summer, I think the original Mad Max is underrated.
Mad Max 1 I feel is secretly the best one when the bigger budget sequel always gets the attention. Ditto for Terminator than Terminator 2.

My first viewing was the best theater experience, because of the really enthusiastic crowd opening night. Just a great shared experience we were all absorbed in.

But I've enjoyed the film itself more on successive viewings, for the reason you mentioned. It's a remarkably detailed film and I've both noticed more and more things with each watch, and found I can appreciate what they are doing more now that I've processed it a bit.

Rogue One is really interesting to me to see how it does. I'm not even sure how I feel about it myself. Its like there is so much mystery now in the franchise people want to know WHATS NEXT are people going to be thrilled to go watch a side story spin off? I mean don't get me wrong, it will be big I just don't really know how big or not it will be.
I'm expecting it to be successful, but not near as successful as The Force Awakens. The novelty of a new Star Wars movie is gone and there's not the excitement about where this one will go since it's a prequel.

I am sure Disney would be ecstatic with half the gross of The Force Awakens for Rogue One.

Gotta say I never expected to see a BO as huge as this one. It's going to be over 1000 posts above the previous record.

It's already the largest thread by close to 1300 posts. I'm curious to see how things hold up for the second half of the holidays in tomorrow's thread.

That said, I have 5 hours of driving home from the holidays tomorrow, so I might not get another chance to post before the new thread is up. I hope everyone had a good Christmas if you happen to be in a part of the world where that is a thing. If not, at least it's the weekend!

It's been a fun thread.

For real.

JEJ is the only Vader.

Except maybe, Chad Vader.

Funny how David Prowse signs autographs as "David Prowse is Darth Vader". Nope. They even had another actor play Chewie in any scene where Chewie was mobile in the TFA. Bart the bear + Ben Burtt is Chewie and JEJ is Vader.

It sort of morphed into this weird little community thread discussing movies. I am going to miss it when its gone in a way.

Just continue it in every weekly thread. It will never get this big each week but if regulars keep on posting it can be pretty active.

His voice is already kind of shot. Keith David or Tony Todd would be cool replacements.

Neither of them sound anything like James Earl Jones, and his voice sounds perfectly fine as it was recorded for Rebels.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason he did the Rebels work was because he was already in the booth doing ADR for Rogue One, honestly.

Yeah, his voice sounds pretty good. Did not notice anything off about it.

Just end the first Rogue One trailer with Vader breathing and guarantee 1B at the BO.

[Star Wars: A New Hope] makes clear that he lets Han, Luke, and Leia escape the Deathstar on purpose in order to lead them to the rebels but the spoilered bits would change some of the stuff in ANH depending on how it is explained.

Really? I guess it's been a while since I watched EP4, but where is it made explicit that Vader intentionally let the Millenium Falcon escape?

I mean, it's a bit stupid that all they'd have to do is shoot down 6 TIE Fighters to get away, but letting them get away seems incredibly dumb and risky. Vader completely lucked out that the Rebel base was within firing distance of the Death Star. They could have been on the other side of the galaxy, and planned an organized attack with weeks of preparation time.

BvS/Civil War/Rogue One. The next place you bet thread for the new year.

Independence Day: Resurgence as the dark horse because they brought back Jeff Goldblum and JW did not.

Theres a scene right after the Millenium Falcon escapes where Tarkin asks if Vader is sure the tracking beacon has been secured on the ship, that he is taking an awfully big risk blah blah etc. Basically they are tracking the Falcon to the rebel base so that they can blow it up.

After they down the Tie Fighters, there is a scene between Vader and Tarkin. Tarkin says something along the lines of, "Are you sure the homing beacon is aboard their ship? We're taking an awful risk, Vader." It's how the Death Star tracks the Falcon to the rebel base.
