So, don't want to start a new thread for this, but is there something about "The Siege of Madrigal" that Marty likes so much? I knew it was in Halo 1 on the AOTCR level, but while I was looking for a piano version on youtube, I found that you can also hear it on Ivory Tower.

It's a beyond awesome piece of music, instead of hiding it everywhere, he should just remix it into Halo 3. :D Anyone who may not have heard of this piece, check here...

I think many just exaggerate Halo's "shitty" graphics because they expected so much from it. I don't think the difference is nearly as much as some people seem to think, especially after viewing these shots, but I definitely think he's right in that making it more gritty probably would have made it look better for many people (not that they should have done this).

I think the biggest issue is the animations. The visuals are fantastic, but casual gamers are becoming a bit more blind to those sort of details, and things like animations stick out more.

Halo 3's animation (judging from the vids) looks on par with what we've seen last gen. It all looks hand animated. The start of the vid shown at E3 shows a brute kicking a soldier...it looked somewhat ridiculous when compared to the mocap animations of CoD4 and KZ2.

I look at the first Halo 3 commercial (with the guy in the suit) and the coolest part of the ad is when he started running. If you saw that sort of running in H3 it would leave a much different impression of the game's visuals, especially among casuals.

Other than that I think Halo 3 has an awesome lighting engine and the environments will look stellar. The engine is clearly next gen, both graphics and sound...but the animations really stick out. To me, a lot of them look robotic and stiff, as if there aren't many joints involved in the animations. I'm not saying overdone animations are the solution, but animations with more nuances and character, on a micro scale.

Brutes don't animate as realistically as human marines? I'm gonna need to see some real-life footage of a Brute to compare this one. ;)

Ummm, that's how real aliens move...
...how do you know this? ;)

With the Brute animations and the like, they shouldn't have to move just like humans, but it'd help if it'd look a bit more... believable.
No, that's not a pun. Honest.

I absolutely love that piece of music, it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

please Marty, I'm asking..no, I'm begging you, put this music piece in Halo 3! imagine how much sadness this music piece, coupled with either seeing Master Chief die or seeing the entire Galaxy just be obliterated by the Halo's firepower, would generate. I'm getting kind of sad just thinking about it actually..

If it's in, I'm sure it will be another Easter egg. I'd never heard it until the AotCR egg in Halo 1, as I haven't played the Myth games. I've since listened to that one-minute piece several dozen times. Beautiful stuff.

That video is actually very well edited to the timing in the music, with movements punctuating the beats well. The closing fanfare from the announce trailer is a bit jarring, though.

Both don't animate properly. Like I said, when that brute was picking up a human, it didn't look natural at all. We can get into specific reasons like gravity not being apparent or the Brute not balancing himself properly, but we can avoid all of those issues if one mo-capped the animation. It could have been mocapped, but if it was, it was definitely sped up or tweaked.

Sorry, I can't make a gif of it...but here's a YouTube vid, it's within the first 15 seconds...

Looks insanely cheesy, as it looks sped up...but the background and actual character models and the way they are lit looks fan-freaking-tastic. But that animation...especially after seeing games like CoD4 and KZ2 at E3...really brings the whole game down when it comes to graphics.

That IGN article is stupid. If anything the colours make Halo 3 looke even better. Is this really is the reason some people are saying Halo 3 has sub par graphics?

Err, no.

Anyone who says Halo 3 looks shit is saying it because they want Halo 3 to look shit. Its an emotional response. Simple as that.

now that I think about it, didn't this same music piece play in the background of Halo 3's main menu during the Beta?

It's the snow ball effect. Since the beta didn't look that great, people could openly say it looked like shit, and soon enough everyone was saying it looked like shit, and now, no matter what you do, halo 3 will allways look like shit.

Let me lay this out and see what you guys think.

October 6, 2004
- Gamespot article

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10/06/news_6109802.html

To get to the bottom of some of the [Seattle Times] article's more head-scratching assertions, GameSpot contacted a Microsoft representative for clarification. To wit, the story's report that more than 1 million presales have been recorded for Halo 2 is "premature and speculative," said the Microsoft rep. Official numbers have preorders for the highly anticipated sequel at 750,000 units.

October 19,2004 - Microsoft Press Release

http://www.majornelson.com/blog/2004/10/halo-2-breaks-recordsbefore-its-even.html

With three weeks to go before the game hits store shelves, pre-orders for “Halo® 2” – the highly anticipated Xbox® exclusive from Microsoft Game Studios – have eclipsed the 1.5 million mark in the United States.

November 10, 2004 - Xbox.com article

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/press/2004/1110-halo2-history.htm

Halo 2 broke entertainment retail records in its first 24 hours on store shelves. Microsoft Game Studios today announced that the highly-anticipated game sold through 2.4 million units...

The first quote is a bit confusing, but I wanted to leave it in context for the sake of noting that its information came directly from a Microsoft representative. Basically, a Seattle Times article said Halo 2 was at 1 million preorders, but upon contacting an MS rep, Gamespot determined that information to be innacurate.

You have to assume that Gamespot is correct in stating that Halo 2, on October 6, was at 750,000 preorders because they're using a direct quote from a Microsoft representative. It makes sense to me that preorders would pick up the closer a game gets to release, especially with major franchises like Halo, due to Microsoft's massive marketing campaigns, but there is a 750,000 number jump between the Gamespot article, and Microsoft's press release only two weeks later. Is it possible that preorders doubled in only two weeks? The information given by the MS rep for Gamespot's article may have been relying on a past count, so it's likely that the 2 week period between Gamespot's article and the Microsoft press release actually accounted for a longer period of time for preorders - let's be conservative and say a month or so - which would put the 750,000 number at 2 months before Halo 2's release - the exact same time we've just received the 1 million mark regarding Halo 3.

So, basically, in the second-to-last month leading up to Halo 2's release, is it possible that the amount of preorders doubled from 750,000 to 1.5 million? Unless the Microsoft representative in Gamespot's article was simply wrong, which seems unlikely, then it must be true.

It's also safe to assume that the Xbox.com article is accurate in stating that Halo 2 sold 2.4 million copies within the first 24 hours.

So here's what we have:

Preorders doubled in the second-to-last month leading up to Halo 2's release. And on release day, it sells 1 million more than the final preorder tally.

Halo 3 is currently at 1 million preorders. So, using the numbers we've just been looking at, Halo 3's preorders should double during this next month, going up to 2 million copies preordered. And then, on launch day, it should sell another million on top of that - putting it up to 3 million copies within its first 24 hours.

Of course, there are lots of variables - the 360 having a smaller install base than the Xbox, MS's slightly more aggressive marketing strategy, as well as the recent price drop affecting consumers' desicions to purchase a new system. But, if the information in these articles and press releases is correct, I think it's reasonable to assume that Halo 3 will sell close to 3 million copies within its first 24 hours.

EDIT: I should mention that this whole thing started when I found an old press release stating that Halo 2 had 1.5 million preorders before its launch. Which why the headline describing today's Halo 3 preorder press release describes it this way:

'Halo 3' Becomes Fastest-Selling Pre-Ordered Video Game in History

The record that it broke is its speed in presales, not its amount.

Heh. I won't go into that.

I think Halo 3 just has to show its next get leap in scale, and have some huge set pieces, and it will be amazing.

Yeah, the wording in the PR was very careful. Halo 2 hit 750k pre-orders four weeks before launch, Halo 3 is over a million seven weeks from launch - I think that's what they mean by "fastest". Nice digging on the PR.

The problem is not the animation but the camera angle. When animators have to deal with creatures that do not exist, they have to first generate a bone structure model and try to animate it from there, also I bet the animators used different references like a gorilla and other big beasts to try to make the animation more natural. However, the solution that other filmmakers decide to use are different camera angles that hide the rough edges of the animation. A closer camera angle which omitted half the Brute's body could have looked better imo.

BTW, the more I look at that trailer, the more I love it. At the beggining it felt like the editing was noobish, but now that I am all pumped out after the announcements (4 player coop, Forge, new vehicles, etc), that trailer makes me feel even more hyped. Also, I noticed how well it goes with the music. I wonder if Marty scored the trailer after the video was composed because the music is really synched with the video to the point of greatness.

I do believe some animations could use some work, but for the most part they seem fine to me - they may not be particularly mind blowing but I also don't think they look bad - except for said scene with brutes at the start of the trailer (I still think that shouldn't have even been in the trailer). Some other brute animations don't look too great to me but its a bit hard to tell from those short clips. In the beta, however, I thought all of the animations were great.

WTF with all the people in this thread trying to improvise themselves as Animation Supervisor or some shit...

It doesn't take an "animation supervisor" to see that it looks bad.

I can listen to a song and I wouldn't need to be an audio engineer to tell you that a snare is too loud and drowns out the rest of the track. Same sort of deal.

I don't have to be an actor to point out bad acting. Etc.

Download/Watch this Halo 3 trailer I just made (in the past hour lol) to keep the momentum moving! I know I am going to get stoned to death for this... but I did not use Marty music for this trailer... I know its a crime but I am just getting tired of using the same couple of songs when I make Halo trailers... (I need the Halo 3 soundtrack so bad right now).

Instead though I did use some ace fucking Amon Tobin! Who by most who know him... is fucking awesome. So I hope most will look past the lack of Marty and enjoy something a bit fresher.

That was great. I don't mind when vids don't use Marty's music, but I hate when they just mindlessly put songs in that don't fit the mood. Editing the trailer to the beat really made it amazing.

Nice video, as always. The music is fucking awesome. Believe it or not, I've never heard of Amon Tobin, so, because of this, I'll be sure to check out some of his work. Back in the good ol' IGN days I remember loving your videos. Do you have a link to Oh and by the Way? IMO, easily your best video.

I suggest playing with color and matching the video to the beat of the music you pick a bit more. It's what made OaBTW great for me. Maybe a montage of Bioshock, Halo 3, and Mass Effect for your next project? :D

Great work man.

Yeah I still got the video... I will upload it and send it to ya. Though the quality is really crappy.

Amon Tobin actually did the Splinter Cell Chaos Theory soundtrack... but his other albums are just awesome. He just released an album this year titled "Foley Room" and it is awesome.

Check him out on iTunes.

Thanks for the positive comments btw. As we get closer to release I will actually put together something a bit more special. This I seriously did in the past hour. Very quick edit.

So that's like what, 133,333 preorders a month, for like, the last seven and a half months?

Not too shabby Halo, not too shabby at all.

Still kinda pissed that I was able to pre-order this game AGES ago, but I STILL can't fucking pre order MGS4.

It seems like every single one of your posts, you're declaring that you're back. Are you ever here?

Flying Pizza here in Columbus is amazing. Also, there's a place called Dewey's in Cincinnatti, and they have they best pizza sauce ever. Whenever I go to Cincy, I eat Dewey's for just about every meal.

Man, every time I see that picture of the drink I get really hungry for an ice-cold cup of Pepsi, then I look in the fridge to find an almost-empty bottle of flat Faygo.
