WSJ: NX will be "compatible with" Nintendo's Mobile games, is handheld/console hybrid

So correct me if I'm wrong but this seems like Nintendo's "out" of being in direct competition with the PS4 and XBO but at the same time keeping in the console market but also being in the mobile market?

If they're running a custom android OS this makes sense. Would unify their output and give them More killer apps like Go on their own hardware. Could even offer extra features I've the regular mobile versions if they have a 4g antenna in it.

And this is what they meant by the NX being a device that casuals would get behind.

It's essentially a smartphone/tablet that plugs into your TV.

I knew it, Nintendo wouldnt just be developing stuff they cant sell to their own fans and devices. I was going to say how they gon put animal crossing and FE on phones and thats it.. Yet they put pokemon shuffle on both.

You know what scare me?
If the "cheap" mobile Fire Emblem, etc... Game sells/makes good money across NX and mobile... Why should they put efforts on a proper sequel?

ummm did you see how much FE games have been making on 3DS? I doubt a mobile FE will make a lot like Pokemon GO but it should do well, but FE games make plenty for them just flat out cancel the next game, which is prob already deep in development.

Actually using the word HYBRID huh!

What brave soul would have ever dared to dream of such an eventuality?

You want them to not go out of business, right? They you don't want them competing against smartphones as directly. :)

Like I said I'm crazy. :p Yeah, they'd be competing with both the cell phone and home markets which would be unwise but device wise a Nintendo made phone would be amazing if done right.

I know that, I just hate the idea of phone games on a console

Okay, but I still think it's goofy that you'd say "hopefully it doesn't play phone games" when it means additional games on the system at no expense to anyone who isn't interested in them.

While I totally expected and believe this news, I don't see Nintendo giving this thing any networking abilities beyond wifi. Which means it'd be limited to games that don't require an internet connection while on the go. I'm curious to see if I'm wrong.

Good point. I wonder if there will be a 4G version, similar to Vita. It would be very smart with how limited 3DS was with WiFi only (in the sense that in this day and age expecting WiFi hotspots everywhere leads to not being able to play 3DS online in many parts of this country at least). I don't expect the default to come with 4G, but I hope a model does. I'd be all over that.

Is this a contributor?

Mochizuki-san is the main Nintendo guy these days at WSJ. Has been for a couple years now at least, I believe.

As the thread title is updated, I should note that this article is from the same reporter, Takashi Mochizuki, who wrote the "industry-leading chips" story last fall. Which seems to have been true, just not in the way some wanted it to be.

Yeah, the X1 is very modern and a strong contender for best mobile SoC, even if it is technically a year and a half old.

Right, if I'm gonna carry this thing around, I'd want to be able to play all my games on it rather than pull out my phone as well. Just makes sense anyway, Nintendo games on your Nintendo device.

Catch Pokémon on Pkmn GO and then use them in a classic style Pokémon RPG would be cool I guess.

And yes, I know GO isnt really a Nintendo game but you get the point

GO adds nothing special for a normal pokemon RPG, you can just capture any pokemon you want already in the game.

And as you said, GO isn't nintendo.

I still dont see any definition for console/handheld hybrid

As far as I'm concerned, this is a handheld with TV out, and the only thing that's "hybrid" about it is that it's combining both of Nintendo's business lines.

I'd personally call that a consolidation, but I imagine Nintendo likes the hybrid messaging more since it sounds a lot better than "We dumped our console line."

Its a hybrid, you are done now

You will address those that correctly predict the future of the good ship Nintendo in a manner befitting of such nobility. Lest we have a society that ruminates on the barking of wild hounds and not the celestial knowledge of true videogame industry scholars.

Yeah, this is how I'm reading the situation too. I'm totally happy with it, but it isn't exactly what I'd call a hybrid. The dock could change that.

I like the idea of a single Nintendo box. If the entirety of Nintendo's development force is behind a single system then you don't need third party support.

To be fair, though, Wii U was still home to console-type experiences (BotW as originally intended, XCX, #FE, 3DW, Pikmin et al.) that 3DS never saw the likes of. So they dumped their console HW line, but the SW is surely still very much alive. This will be the first time current Nintendo console experiences will be portable, but those console experiences will also still be present on your TV at home. I feel like I'm wording that strangely, hopefully it makes sense.

If consolidating 2 why not 3? I've always thought that it would be highly stupid for Nintendo to not have their own mobile games on their platform (and not take back that 30% cut where they can). Doesn't need to mean Android support either, it's entirely possible that Nintendo has some cross-platform framework or tool that can convert apps (the latter would be highly useful to other devs and probably bring in extra support).

So the system is Android based to some extent?

Not necessarily, it could just be easy to port and release on both mobile and NX. With a Tegra(based)-SOC and Vulkan-based API it would probably be relatively easy as I understand it.

I'm curious about this too. Maybe we really could get Fantasy Life 2 on Nintendo's next handheld then!

I imagine developers would be free to release their own mobile games too. I mean it already happens to an extent on 3DS and Vita.

EDIT:

You need to spend more time in the politics threads predicting what'll happen with labour then.;-)

Oh, no, I agree with you there. I mean that they dumped the console hardware line and just put both types of software on the same system.
