Xbox FY25 Q1 Gaming revenue up 43% up year-over-year; Hardware declined 29%

Is that worldwide?
Cringe Reaction GIF
Yes it's worldwide, although 1.3 million (i have 1.2 million) is down by 30% from last year it is a decent improvement over the 800k last quarter.

Plenty of teardowns online and I thought there was a wide consensus about it. Are we gonna challenge that too? JFC...
Simple question. Your panties have absolutely no reason to be so bunched unless you have a personal stake in something here. As I understand it, the PS5 has several advantages when it comes to performance, so when someone says the Series X is “better built”, I generally ask in what regard.

So you are not satisfied by the answers every and each time. I hope you find what you are looking for, son.
No, son, I asked you and you obviously have no answer.

Thus, I’ll assume the original view - the Series X has a better cooling solution and graphics card. PS5 has better I/O and much faster storage medium.

Better graphics card based on what? Teraflops? That doesn't measure a card's full potential and thus why many before this gen have egg on their face now.

Please never throw that teraflop nonsense in my direction. I game on PC and we rightfully laugh at the overuse of that term.

It was based on shader advantage, memory bandwidth, and bus (of which all are superior on the Series X). The folks with egg on their face were only talking theoretical peak.

Terrible decline in hardware it must be said. I wonder what sort of revenue Sea of thieves PS5 brought in. There seems to be a lot of players.

I see. The only way I could see Series X being built better such as the person you quoted said is being engineered in a much smaller package. Outside of that, it's advantages are offset by advantages by the PS5.

Yep, this is what I was getting at!

I told you you can look for teardowns online and it was the obvious best call for someone who isn't going to be satisfied with any answer.

The thing is (or was, dunno how they compare now) a whole kilo heavier than the PS5. Physically it's better than the PS5 even as scrape.

I was obviously referring to the cost of producing them.

Satisfaction isn’t really what I was after and I’ve seen the necessary teardowns. The whole point of the question was highlighted in the original quote. “Much better built”. I know it has physical advantages, but I was curious what else you meant. Problem with folks on GAF is the taking of a question as an attack when I’m just all about the discussion!

It doesn't need a stand to lay flat for one. The design of the PS5 is atrocious. But I still love the console for the games and the controller. Sony finally pulled ahead with a great controller.
Its design wasn’t really in question. We were specifically talking hardware.

Not true, PS5 shipped with 36CU APU while Series X with 56CU and that simply highlights the genius of Cerny who managed to get better performance with cheaper silicon.

In a huge console footprint with a massive heat sink. Sony was deffo spending money to build the ps5 and its contents to keep the higher clocked gpu cool. Also draws more power than the xbox. But efficiency is rarely talked about in console gaming.

Overall Cernys decision probably did save a bit of money overall though.

It's funny to see he threw his narrow and fast argument out the window for pro and went wider than even the series x.

Japanese console games industry died. Its making a comeback now by going multi platform.

Sony console business survived due to worldwide multiplat titles that grew huge.
Sony’s console business survived because they know what they’re doing and that includes releasing many high quality, high selling exclusives.

Funny how you completely sidestepped Nintendo though. 🤓

Requirements changed (lower volume console that does not need to establish the market and the mindshare with devs either), ASP target changed, … when the problem and the data change so can your decision.
I think good architecture is a balance of all of those factors and needs to keep in mind your timing too.

Thing is that the clock speed did not drop compared to PS5 nor did the approach of variable clock speed (power used vs temperature measured based clocks per management, GPU being able to borrow “power” from the CPU, etc…)… so 🤷‍♂️ they did not throw anything out of the window but sure they have a wider design with much fatter caches (which might have been a problem with the XSX design) and much higher clockspeed than the XSX.

It seems deliberate and pragmatic follow-up to their ideals actually.

Future of Playstation lies in improving engagement with their games.

Guess where that concept came from?
Future of PlayStation lies in doing what they’re currently doing. Future of Nintendo lies in the same (except with even more exclusives).

That said, since you are notorious for ignoring parts of posts and kicking goalposts down the block - I’m going to bring it back to the original point - why did Xbox fail?

Xbox failed is fan fiction. Hilarious actually.

Discussing with you seems like discussing with an Albanian about who invented what and when:

Use your imagination.

I dont wanna spell out everything. Its tiring.

Xbox making use of Bethesda / Activision Blizzard to propel its console business will be catastrophic for industry. As is proven by Playstation trying to make everything exclusive.

So it was flat without activison.
Is it normal to remove studios from earnings that were acquired? And if so, for how long? Because we would have a lot of studios to remove from earnings for other platforms. Asking for a friend.

He proved his point period. And he hasn't thrown anything out of the window. He said it himself "its a balancing act.." and sure as hell he balanced PS5 to mob the floor with Xbox 2 gens in a row. And now he is proving all doubters wrong with how he masterfully designed PS5Pro.

As for the form factor, the hw team went overboard to ensure safe and quiet operation for a mass produced console, then reduced the footprint and the heatsink as time progressed, and we still have one of the quietest/most reliable console in modern era.

Simply look at the form factor of PS5Pro and you realize masterfully Sony managed to cram such power in that form factor.

Until it normalized - i.e. an full year passed
Normal comparison is apples to apples, not apples to apples+oranges
Until things became the same on both sides and you'll be compared apple+oranges last year against apples+oranges this year

It’s not fan fiction. As a hardware platform, it has failed. 29% decline after a previously notable decline. 1.3m sold in the last quarter (in only its fourth year on the market). That is a failure.

Of course, you ignore everything else.
Do you want them to make everything exclusive and force everyone to their hardware platform?

They can should do what works for a platform. Right now, it’s evident that whatever that is, it has not helped Xbox hardware to remain healthy.

Clearly, their competitor(s) have the right idea.

Series X console is generally heftier and feels more premium than PS5 when you hold it (I own both). It's also quieter in operation.

Microsoft did a very good job when it comes to designing these machines.

If they want hardware sales, thats the only course of action.

They are smart to not pursue it.

Agreed its time for them to move on from hardware sales and focus on their other offerings. I still think they need to work on releasing quality must play games consistently regardless of what direction they are heading in.

Their games are must play.

Just ignore internet, subscribe to gamepass, a lot of good stuff.

This is another feather in their cap.

They understand perpetual hype cycles are counterproductive in long term. Play games for what they are. Keep playing if you get hooked.

Nice to see the Xbox division doing well.
Now if only they could spend some of that money on actual Television promotions and market their bloody console
If you mean well as in better than Wii U, yeah, but their console is at Wii 2011 magnitudes of dropping off a cliff.

Which is why these two franchises will likely never release on the same fiscal year. It's in Microsoft's best interest to not have a year that is so utterly stacked with super hyped releases to the point where games start to step on each others' toes.

They want each tentpole release to be there to anchor a FY of its own.
But it doesn't work that way. COD is pretty much released every year. Unless they are changing that. And Elder Scrolls releases when it does. But no doubt, a year will come when both games are released in the same year.

The issue is that MS, is first and foremost, now a game publisher. With their stack of IPs and studios, they can be the single biggest publisher in the industry. But they also want to push gamepass. Now they thing is, what gamepass really needs to become the "Netflix" of gaming, is to stack AAA game releases. And by that I mean, have a AAA game release at least every 2 or 3 months. That's the whole reason they went on their acquisition spree.

But if you are doing this and tying it to gamepass, then you are leaving a shit ton of money on the table, which would be worth it if gamepass ends up having like 60M+ annual subscribers, but not worth it if people instead just sub for the odd month or two to play all your games. They have also thought about this, which is why now they have new tiers of gamepass that don't have day 1 releases.

So... MS either has to double down on gamepass... or double down on being a publisher first and foremost. In a world where they can release 4 AAA games that could each go on to sell over 10M copies at $70 a pop... that starts to make a very difficult argument for gamepass.

Right. This is what many of Xbox’s biggest supporters ignore. One of the major reasons for their hardware failure is support.

Ironically, the person who agrees with you disagrees that exclusive games, particularly good ones, are a necessity to a console’s health. That cluelessness is why they still blindly coddle, instead of demanding better from the company they favor.
