Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Easy scalability across devices (future xbox's)? all console/xbox exclusive games on their win10 store only?
.
So?

How much money is that going to get them?

Making BC a UWP and putting it on the Win10 store will have a far greater return on investment than will on xbox, they'd be smart to do it for the $ and win10 store push. Idk if they will put BC on win10 though, if they can keep it locked down to prevent piracy I think they probably should.
What money will they get?

BC on Xbox 1 helps sell XB1's. If this was late in the life span of the XB1, it wouldn't of come out.

BC on Win 10 does what?

Its a nice little boys dream, but makes no business sense.

So? Having BC work on all future xbox's is a big part of their vision and UWP would help there and guarantee it works on all (assuming it works as advertised) without having to go back and redo it for Xbox 8374873.

Idk? I'm not a business guy, but I don't think it's too out of the realm to say it'll sell atleast 500k RDR alone (probably way more than that, if GTA V is anything to go by) on PC which even at the discounted price $7.50 that's 1.2M for MS. That's more than they're ever gonna get from one game with 360 BC on XB1.

If they get BC working on PC that gives them a ton of older games on their store aswell, which they're gonna need if they want to compete with Steam.

How much do you think they make on BC on XB1? can't imagine much since people can just buy a 360 and well, a lot of people probably already own those games or can be gotten dirt cheap used which wouldn't really be an issue on PC. They lose money on hardware aswell, so that doesn't help either.

I struggle to see how someone could think PC BC wouldn't bring in more $ than the XB1 BC.

Why would they do that? What is the return of investment?

Nope

Easy reason to charge a non mandatory Xbox gold fee for their windows 10 store . I would pay somethings along the lines of the ea vault of it meant I can play all of the Xbox 360 games emulated on pc

Why do people think that backwards compatibility would come to PC? Truly doesn't make any sense.

Anyways...You do know that the original rendering size didn't change for BC?

So there is no "Render in 4K"

So have no fear...there will be no tears

Makes perfect sense to me... incentivises pc gamers to subscribe to xbox gold because of the 2 free games a month plus access to multiple xbox 360 classics on the cheap without having to purchase new hardware...plus they get xbox one games that could eventually make their way to pc aswell through some future software that allows users to effectively turn their pcs into xbox's... kinda like what valve was trying to do with steam machines.

Yup. Plus, 360 will be fully emulated by hobbyists anyway someday, so may as well get out in front of it and sell some games.

I need games in my actual backlog to become BC:

Bulletstorm
Tomb Raider Legend
Tomb Raider Underworld
Enslaved
Catherine
Killer Is Dead
Hitman Absolution
Kingdom of Amalur
Asura's Wrath
Arkham Origins
Deadly Premonition

And I'm on the fence on ever playing through Dragon Age 1, Dragon Age 2, Assassin's Creed 3, and Assassin's Creed Rogue, but I'd gladly add all four games to my list if they're ever BC.

So far virtually every single good/compelling BC game is something I've already played. There have been four exceptions: Dark Souls 1, Witcher 2, Halo Reach and Portal Still Alive.

Edit: Updated my lists slightly.

I doubt they'll do anything with Bulletstorm. They won't even remove the GFWL from the PC version.

Well Bulletstorm I could live without. But I've been unlucky in the sense that very very little in my 360 backlog is being made backwards compatible. And the list in my previous post is literally all I have left to play. I've played every single other 360 game I'm interested in.

I would be ecstatic if any of the listed games ever becomes BC...

It's almost as MS did bc also to make still some money from the digital 360 store which they most probably do.
And I wouldn't be surprised to see the emulator on pc for the same reason.

Maybe Epic / People can't fly have got better things to do?

Didn't People Can Fly reacquire the Bulletstorm IP from Epic recently? Perhaps they're working on something? I'd love to see Bulletstorm on BC to raise interest for whatever they're doing next.

BS and Enslaved are both awesome games. And underrated. DA1 is great but shows its age graphically. DA2 isn't as great but it's better than I originally gave it credit for.

What about existing 360 games you own? Should they be blocked unless you have a gold membership? Is that part of your plan?

Probably will be if they're on disc, but no reason for the digital ones to be done that way.

I don't think they'd make discs work on PC, it's not worth the effort and no PC gamer will use discs anyway. Instead of calling it 360 BC they'll just call it 360 library or something where if you have it digitally already it'll work.

That means they wouldn't have to buy Gold then.

So I will ask again. Where is the return for investment for bringing BC to PC?

Where/how does Microsoft not only recoup the millions in moving BC to PC, but pay for ongoing support? Where is the profit?

How many 360 games would get sold? Most people already have them already. So getting a small slice of a small number of low cost digital purchases isn't going to do it.

This is too funny.

Except if it's UWP it should just work on PC (1 code works on all devices, so MS says anyway), so there wouldn't be much "effort" involved, the only effort would be updating the current BC titles to be UWP and even that might not be a big deal considering they already have a win32>uwp converter, I'm sure they can do a 360/xb1>uwp converter aswell.

Using your logic where is the benefit in it being on XB1 ? there's even less of a reason to put it on XB1 than PC, but they're doing it anyways and will never recoup the time nor money invested in it.

It's a virtual machine made using MS's software that is already running on Windows. It's fairly trivial in the grand scheme of things.

The profit comes from a unified XBox/PC which is clear it's what they're aiming for now.

Its not.

BC was out before windows 10 came to the XBox One.
Like 6 games were out before Win10 came to XB1. That's not much at all. What's stopping them from updating it be UWP, and to be future proof on future xbox's, aswell as working on any win10 device they please?

Why not convert it to UWP in it's early stages, instead of having to go back and rewrite the emulator to work on the xbox two, three, four or whatever? The current XB1 emulator isn't going to work forever on all future xbox's, with UWP it might.

To sell XB1's

Pretty simple actually.

XB1's don't make money, they lose money on hardware.

And they could just buy a 360, or use the one they probably already own in that case.

Why pay millions of dollars to convert it to UWP? Where is the return on investment?

I take it that you do not work in the software development world.

Well, with that business insight. Why make consoles period.

I didn't realize you are a part of XBox management and have a good grasp of their business plan.

Could we please go back to talking about Xbox One bc, because this isn't going anywhere. I wanted to add my own detailed opinion, but it's not worth it.
Xbox 360 bc on PC IS worth it.

I want Prince of Persia 08 next. Pls.

My dream game will always be Super Street Fighter IV (with the AE and USFIV DLC, of course), but I'd also like to see The Darkness II and Crysis 3 added. Also, Tomb Raider Anniversary is still in my back log, and I took a chance on TR: Underworld and Portal 2 becoming BC eventually.

I'd like to see most or all of the LEGO games not available on Xbox One become BC:

LEGO Star Wars 3 (already coming I think)
LEGO Indiana Jones
LEGO Indiana Jones 2
LEGO Harry Potter 1
LEGO Harry Potter 2
LEGO Batman 2
LEGO LOTR

I found Syndicate underwhelming. I'm not going to say no to more BC games though, so hopefully you guys get your wish.

If they announced Singularity then I'd triple dip that one.

The gunplay and abilities were great, and the co-op was a lot of fun. So, yes.

The name, and the hate people gave it for not being a strategy game, sunk it though.

Yep. I picked it up on PC when it was $5 and really enjoyed it. It had a great look, great weapons, and the shooting felt really good. Totally recommended.

Why is Xbox holding back on the most anticipated BC title?

Until this is up, your wasting our time MS.

In this case neither matter considering Fallout New Vegas runs on the same tech as 3 so I can't fathom that one being too difficult to get on BC surely.
I'd argue that Bethesda still has a 100% stake in mattering when it comes while Obsidian has 0%. Obsidian for all essential purposes is irrelevant in the scenario :P

Correct. It was on the list of "Coming Soon" titles in the official Backwards Compatibility page. That section was recently removed from the page, probably because it was generating a lot of angst.

It's widely known Bioshock is now getting a remaster, too.
