Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

So I'm contiplating restart Xenoblade on the 3ds mainly cause I haven't beat it yet.

You think I'll run the risk of burning myself out on Xenoblade that I won't want to play XCX?

That's a risk I'm willing to take myself. Playing through XC on Wii right now and I also never finished it many months ago. I'm about 60% through so the goal is to finish before next week. I have no reason to think I'll be burned out since it's all gonna be new and looks so amazing.

So is it confirmed that you can chose from your friend list for 32 mission squads? I made a discord channel for setting up World Boss fights and missions, but it would be pointless if there's no way to chose who to play with.
You can choose to join the squad of anyone on your friend or favorites list.

Gah, why is Amazon sending out the SE on the 8th? Anyone else like that? I have Prime, and preordered the day it was announced months ago.

All you guys are saying December 8th, but it says the earliest I'll get mine will be the 10th, and im pretty sure I ordered this the same day pre-orders went up.

Any explanation?

I called them and they said it was a supply issue.

I decided to say screw it and go with Gamestop.

For what it's worth, I recently bought a Vita from Amazon, and it came in on November 20 even though Amazon told me it would be in sometime between November 23-26. It doesn't make a difference to me, though, since I'm not done with finals until the 12th.

Every game I've ever preordered through Amazon.de arrived a day early. Granted, I've only preordered four games from them and I'm a Prime customer, but I've nevertheless had a very positive experience with them. They specifically promise delivery on release day, though I don't think it's a guarantee you can demand a refund for if they fail to fulfill it.

Soo... Was looking at Amazon.co.jp for artbooks and this popped up in my Recommendations.

Looks like a XCX artbook like the Monado Archives? :D

Complete with super adorable concept art of Lin.

Sorry if this was posted about already!
Googles not translating this page for me for some reason, is this different than the one that comes with the SE?

I was hoping to jump into Xeno-land with this game as it looks amazing, but the podcast impressions I'm hearing is that whilst it's large, it's not particularly immersive from a coherence perspective. That is, there's lots of creatures but they really just feel like things plopped into a world and not really living beings in a world if you get my drift. Sounds like it's a bit hollow.

Yeah, that sounds like the IGN podcast. It's one opinion. Not gonna say its right or wrong, but Gamexplain basically says the opposite. Things like, "You'll never be bored exploring this world" and that it feels very much alive. And of course there are a bunch of other impressions like the eurogamer one the thread is titled after or the gamesradar one, "Holy crap. I've played a lot of open world games this year. Too many. But none have given me such an overwhelming urge to explore, to conquer a harsh, untamed land, to study its ecosystem and witness how the different species interact with one another."

Maybe at least wait until the reviews hit for more detailed impressions from more sources, and watch videos to see if the world looks interesting to you.

Which podcast? Is it by any chance IGN? I remember Jose (or maybe it was someone else there) making a similar comment a long time ago.

The reason I ask is because the GameXplain discussions have stated the exact opposite, talking about how alive the game feels and how the creatures interact with each other and the world in various ways. I'm not sure who to trust.

EDIT: It seems like Malus and I had the same guess and the same comparison to make.

Gamexplain weren't the only ones to mention that the world is alive and the animals do more than just stand or occasionally walk around, but I cant remember but someone also mentioned how animals would eat eachother occasionally or go to sleep and such.

Ah, good to know. I've tried to limit my preview exposure for this game. Everything you mentioned sounds wonderful.

between Overwatch and overtime I've barely made a dent in Xenoblade, but I do still plan to finish it before X comes out. I can maybe get 30 hours in between now and then if I play all weekend. I'm currently a ways after the last party member:
Inside Mechonis, just opened the bulkhead to go outside and am still climbing. I had a cutscene were they said I was around the thigh level.
I think I can manage unless this game is way longer than I think it is.

I just need to, like...not try to do things like unlock skill trees or do side quests. Melia is really fun to play as though. Just need to figure out what I'm supposed to do about 'visions' without the Monado.

I usually scoff at the "Our open world is the biggest open world!" claims, but here it made sense. We're crash landing on a planet big enough that we even need giant robots to explore it, and I expect big.

I'm not sure I'll explore every nook and cranny since my time doesn't allow me to do that anymore, though. Which feels terrible.

EU data packs are to be made available on Monday apparently.
I won't be playing the game till the 25th but it will be nice to have the packs downloaded regardless.

They talk about this for a few minutes as one of the game's greatest strengths.

My order said December 7-9, a day after pre-orders went up it changed to 9-12.

In my time with the japanese import, this is pretty much my main issue with the game. The world is quite large, but doesn't really feel all that coherent. Because it's built with different layers of scale in mind (human -> mech -> flying mech) it's not really designed to be viewed from the eye level viewpoint like other open world games are. Also, once you get the mech, and eventually, the flying mech, the scale kind of goes out the window. This is why they gate that so late, it forces you to run on the ground a lot more and get that feeling for a little longer. It's not intimately designed for a human sized avatar, and your run-speed and jump height reflects this.

I don't want to make these sound like bigger problems than they are, because they're relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. It's just that the trailers have done a really good job of showing the world viewpoint from just the right angle, whereas in game, the world comes off as a little less personal. It's hard to explain, it's like an MMO map, in that regard.

Anywho, to keep from being a wet-towel, my friend who actually bought the game and finished it completely said it's probably his favorite game this year. He also never beat Xenoblade, so that's interesting.

I have a question. I know you can customize your mech, but can you progress through the game customizng your characters weapons and armor? That's one thing that I loved about Mass Effect and Dragon Age, that I could always make my character a badass in certain get ups.

Armor shows up on your character yes. You can also switch the way your gear looks to that of any other gear you've gotten if you want to though

Yes, you even have an option to show cool gears instead of an ugly equipement that you just looted. Meaning that you keep the stats but not the look (sorry, if I'm explaining badly).

Edit : beaten

Also, can someone explain how the online works? Can you choose people from gaf to play with?

From my memory...

1) When you're connected online, you will see the character of other players of your "server/division/group" and play with that character in solo mode. They will gain exp.
2) You can join the group/division/server of your choice (max limit to 32 members).
3) You can play onlike with 3 members of that group special missions, but only for those missions (not 100% sure)
4) To unlock those special mission, your group/division/server has to accomplish small missions (in solo ?).
5) you can trade between your party

So don't expect to be a full feldged mmorpg on the Wii U where you and your friends will progress together through the story an side mission.
It's not the goal of the game since it's focused on solo rpg.

like transmorgification from diablo or whatever its called (aka i could have the best stat equipment on and have either it or another outfit on as the look for the character) if so.. awesome.

Basically you get two armor slots for each armor piece. One for stats and one for looks.

Gamespot's promised second article and another kotaku preview:

I gotta get off twitter man. Risk of spoilers is so high. Saw another gif.

But I want those journalist tweets too...

From the Gamespot article:
Back in October, Monolith Soft posted a notice about a "mass hiring" for 3D designers, and many assumed another one of these lengthy JRPGs was in the studio's future. But Takahashi explained that that particular posting was for support roles; in the past, the company has helped on titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and more recently, both new Animal Crossing 3DS games and Splatoon. Monolith is currently supporting a handful of other Nintendo projects, specifically projects needing map design and "interesting adventure elements."
Zelda perhaps?

But will we be seeing more Xeno games in the future?

"The opportunity presents itself," Takahashi said coyly. "Usually I need to start with an interesting idea or direction that I feel it's going to have some compatibility here but if that presented itself, I would consider doing so."
