Your favorite obscure console feature

Hidden Master System built in snail game.

Minestorm on Vectrex (not obscure)

2600 joystick compatibility on ColecoVision.

Soft debug reset cable on Commodore 64.

You can put a PS1 disc in your PS3, and it'll stream it to your PSP (remote play). I always thought you needed to Digital Downloaded versions to do that but nope.

Also, while the PS1 disc is in your PS3, head on over to Audio and you can rip the tracks/music from the PS1 disc, which i always thought was kinda cool.

I knew about the remote play portion but thanks man ! I didn't know about the ripping of audio from the PS1 disc.

Neo Geo Pocket Color. Having the ability to set multiple time zones. Between travel and dealing with buisness in multiple nations, I love having the ability to know what time it is in multiple places.

I wish I could do that on my home consoles too, especially when I have multiple accounts for different regions.

How the wiiU downloading data music increases in intensity when you shake the gamepad

Wow I didn't know about this either, Geez I guess I haven't spent enough time on the Wii U. I do think it sucks through if your downloading something in the background and one of the App's crash the OS and you have to hard boot the system the data is damage while other console's you can resume the download.

Not really a direct feature but Pocketstation is always my favorite peripheral

Not many people will have seen this due to the failure of the 64DD, but if you leave the menu on without a disk in, Mario appears and starts goofing around:

Also, the SNES Satellaview add-on I mentioned earlier offered full streaming audio for the games. For example, BS Zelda Link to the Past had a fully orchestrated soundtrack:

Imagine playing through it at the time with that music. HOLY FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

I dunno, if it's a common feature among DVD/BR players, but I love how the PS3 remembers where I left off, even if I've watched several discs inbetween. Unfortunately it doesn't work with some discs.

Gamecube had this too IIRC.
In case people didn't know what he's talking about, you can replace the little black circle in the lid. Just open it, and you can push it out. I believe it was designed to be customizable, but it was never really used.

One of the coolest free gifts I’ve seen, the GameCube fascia came with CUBE Magazine. It replaces the black disk on the lid of your GameCube, and you change the picture it displays by putting an insert under the clear plastic cover.

Remote play on PS3. Always thought it was cool but only ever ran it as a proof concept. Last few days I've been actually making use of it properly, to continue my Rayman progress from my room when the living room TV is occupied.

I look forward to PS4's remote play quality, as on PS3 the resolution takes quite a hit.

It's not ground breaking but I like a lot how the PS3 changes the input on my tv to the respective hdmi by itself, when I turn my PS3 it turns on the tv and if I turn off my tv the PS3 turns itself off.

And with the PS1 that feature to insert a music disc while playing was so amazing , it blew my mind the first time I tried it.

the full install feature on 360.

the fact PS4 still hasn't announced if they'll have that feature is irritating me.

S-Video support on any console can be called "obscure" (in the US at least) and the fact that I can say that with a straight face makes me very, very sad.

I really appreciate the 360s ability to remember to default my controls to inverted Y axis.

Sadly I think allot of people missed out on this option cause it was so hidden after all the dashboard update's. So it very much ends up being obscured

PS2 Clock:

This was damn impressive considering screensavers were still a thing at the time.

PS2 had best OS ever created, so many secrets.

This clock orbs rotates in a different combination for every second. when time reach 00:00 it gathers in the middle to form big orb, also those crystals used to be filled with light the more minutes pass each hour.

So fucking cool :)

With the Gameboy Player, you could link up an actual GBA and use that as a controller.

Also, does PSP Remote Play work with PS2 games? I might buy an old model PS3 if it does.

The alarm clock on the DS saved my ass a million times over in the distant years of 2007-2009.

But maybe that's not really an "obscure feature"...

Yeah, certain games such as Ridge Racer allowed it. I think it's because the race would be loaded into the RAM, while the music would still be steamed from the CD.

In the original Animal Crossing on GameCube, the entire game could be played without the disc.

I like the mini trailers that plays whenever you highlight a game or it's save file icon. Too bad not a lot of games have been doing this anymore.

Damn. front Mission 3 via remote play

If you close the curtains on the wiiU browser and wait long enough your Mii will pop up and start silent jokes, singing (silently), juggling, or doing magic tricks.

How do I get this to work on ps3? Is it in settings somewhere?

MOTHER OF GOD

I believe it only works with Bravia TVs,

On the PS3; Settings-System Settings-Control for HDMI=ON

TV: Settings-HDMI settings-Everything ON/Yes

I don't know if this works on any other brand of TVs : ( Sorry.

Perhaps this one's a bit obvious, but I enjoy the fact that the Wii U gamepad can play a separate audio stream from the TV speakers. Some games and system apps use it to create a poor man's surround sound effect (which I appreciate, as I don't have a surround sound setup). The gamepad speakers aren't amazing, but they are far better than what you get from the wiimote speaker.
