Apple Special Event - 9.9.14 - "Wish we could say more"

And now we get to the spec list portion of today's festivities.

I understand concerns with RAM and how aggressively Safari will refresh, but the rest...meh. As with almost every other release, the phone will come out, the display will look great and the performance benchmarks will blow away just about every other phone out there.
Performance benchmarks are pointless.

I just a phone that will let me surf the web in peace. To switch between apps easily. None of this refreshing crap. It's so frustrating and I've lost work because of it.

It looks like WR before the NTH.

That doesn't compare to the other two part numbers.

That second last letter certainly doesn't compare to an L. It's something new.

It's my understanding that the first batch of numbers denote the capacity, up to H9CKNNNBKTM. The rest may be things like low power, etc.

Yeah that was another thing I should've mentioned, I hate being locked out of OS upgrades and the fact that my iPad would be running iOS 8 while my 4 would have iOS 7 would be irritating. Thanks!

At this point, even a 5s will seem like a massive upgrade for you. I'm trying to remember the specs of the 4 but I don't think it even had 4G/LTE capability. Also, iOS7 was limited visually on the 4. I would definitely upgrade to the 6 if I were you.

Nope only 4s had 4g

I am super excited for this event, but I really need the 6 to be a huge step up. Some of the rumors sound promising, others (RAM) not so much.

Which is why I said I understand concerns about RAM, depending on your usage. 1080p wars and 'underpowered' are a different story, and I completely disagree that the performance of the device is 'pointless'.

It's really the iPad that would get that boost from more ram. The fact that I can actually multitask on my Nexus 7 with ease is huge. The Nvidia Tablet has really closed the gap in performance next to the iPad and it's at a good price. Just not sure if its battery efficient as a Qualcomm snapdragon 805 though.

Yeah, that's where I spend most of my browsing time so I agree.

Just boot up VLC, go to /g/, and wait for the gorillion of mirrors that always crop up.

You won't even need a mirror, just wait for the direct link to the stream and VLC will play it fine.

I imagine once it starts every other post in this thread will be instructions for getting it running in VLC or requests for instructions.

It IS going to be a huge step up for the people that matter: 5 owners and older.

This is not for the 5S owner:

I'm pretty sure the iPhone 5 performs well in Web browsing and normal use. Nothing is going to feel significant in performance until they up the ram for multitasking UNLESS you're a big on graphically intense gaming.

U2 rumor mill is getting a lot of activity again. I expect something U2 to happen in one form or the other. At this point I'd be surprised if they weren't there.

Cue salt.

if the screen is bigger and not full HD, that makes the PPI of the screen isn't much different than the 5s.

I am not a big fan of big phones at all. depending on the size of the thing and the screen quality, I might skip the phone and keep the 5s.

I am really hoping for at least a full hd screen. its not possible a 5.5 inch and still not full hd. specially when Apple always brag about their display whatever its on I pad or MacBook laptops.

I believe these reports of less than full hd are just bad rumors

Most interested in Apple's user experience adjustments to accommodate these bigger phones, if any.

Apple very intentionally picked the screen sizes they did so they could be used with one hand, and now these sizes are very much outside of that capacity. I don't expect them to come out and say "you just kind of grip it hard with one hand and slide your palm up the edge to get to the top!".

I'd be a bit let down if they just pump up the sizes and do nothing to help the user use the actual device.

CEO Kaz Hirai ‏@KazHiraiCEO 3m

The Apple iWatch will come with a clever way to tell the time.
Users will know when it's midday because thats when it runs out of charge

Fake Kaz is the best Kaz. :)

Coming from a 4S on AT&T, am I going to see a giant speed increase when I get an iPhone 6 on mobile data networks? From a quick Google it looks pretty significant.
Lol maybe but don't expect much. LTE is now overcrowded in some areas and you can get better speeds dropping down to HSPA+.
