Biggest Let-Downs Disappointments you've had with Gaming

top 3 for me would be
1. Mega Man Legends 3
bought a 3ds soley for this game as it seemed to be the only decent looking game to come out during the dreadful launch

2.TWEWY countdown revealed to be a (shitty)port for iphones
My favorite game from last gen, the fact that there was potentially a sequel still hurts

3. Rumors about a new devil may cry turning out to be...DMC

Silent Hills is the current sting that may linger longer than anything...

If I had an XB1, I would probably vote MCC (I was soooo close to grabbing one just for MCC last fall).

Current champ though goes to:

Diablo 3.

Wouldn't be surprised if I had 1000 hours put into D2 over the past decade. Played D3 for around a week and stopped. Such a horrid mess with terrible design decisions and the most eye-rolling "Haha you can't defeat me... ok NOW you can't defeat me..." dialogue ever in a game...

I went back to it with the expansion and found it solid enough with a lot of mechanics and designs fixed, but I've largely moved on at this point. Will probably pick up the PS4 version though whenever I get a PS4. Comfy couch co-op sounds like fun.

Colonial Marines, waited my whole life for a game like that and it was a disaster.

Alien Isolation made up for it thankfully.

Breath of Fire 6......

It still galls me to this day. Every time something new comes from that announcement, I rage just a little bit more. The only silver lining to Breath of Fire 6, is that it makes Dragon Quarter (which I love) look even better in comparison.

Warcraft 3

Ive learned to appreciate the game over time, but i was really disappointing by the game and its focus on micro, smaller armies and huge health pools of units. I was actually angry at the competitive part of the game and how fucked it was. TFT fixed some stuff, and like i said i learned to appreciate what it was, rather than what it wasent, but i prefer the faster pace, bigger armies, no heroes + random items from Starcraft

It's probably got to be the Master Chief Collection, just because I had waited so long for it and was ready to devote the next few months replaying all the campaigns and immersing myself in the multiplayer. The game was almost unplayable in all modes except single player campaign on launch which sucked. Haven't even finished playing Halo 1's campaign with my friend yet because we were so burned.

Probably GTAV for me. I enjoyed exploring the world and driving around but that was about it. I found the story and controls subpar. I loved Vice City which was the last one I played. Oh well.

Also no Darksiders 3, although there remains a glimmer of hope.

My biggest let down has been pretty much every wrestling game since N64 and the first PS. Nothing has ever captured the magic since.

I can't imagine how disappointing this must have been back in the day.

You'd be surprised.

Many people think gaming wasn't mainstream-popular until Nintendo entered the scene, but people were HYPED for Pac-Man 2600's release. I remember during launch week, there was a full-splash front page article for the game in the Style section of the Washington Post. The cropped box art and text took up the whole front page. It was crazy.

I'm amazed at how quickly it dawned on me that the port was garbage. I didn't even try to convince myself that it was okaaay. The writing was on the wall moments after firing it up. This is after months upon months of anticipation, and the mentioned Q4 holiday-season delay into Q1.

The game is look on fondly today as this schmaltzy relic from the past. Kinda charming in spite, or perhaps because of, the glaring flaws. Heck, I see it like that now. But at the time? There was some serious gamer-rage flowing through the community. People felt betrayed, like for real.

Guess I'm glad that I was around and keenly tuned in to the whole debacle. It sure was something else. Taught me a good lesson about managing expectations to boot.

Bungie.

Went from being one of the last few who rejected putting grindy bs in their game, to having a game that is completely stuffed with bars to fill.

Assassin's Creed III.

Supposed to be the next evolution in the series and a conclusion to the Desmond saga.

Had everything going for it, hoovered up every award at the shows.

What happened?

I think I need to change my answer. The real answer is gaming in general has disappointed me. Maybe its because I'm getting older and priorities are shifting, but every game on the market feel so limiting and like a giant waste of time.

GTA5 - Fun for awhile, but you can so easily see all the seems of the world and how limited it is.
Witcher 3 - Same exact things, looks great, but still all the mechanics of it are right there, black and white.

I want gaming to move toward organic worlds and systems. I want to be SURPRISED by game play, and not have all games be just easily recognizable systems on top of systems to give a poor illusion of actions.

I think thats why No Mans Sky is my most anticipated game, even though I know its going to likely disappoint just as much as something like Spore did.

I'm just tired of "press A, B or Y to win" in games, and the rinse and repeat Halo method of "fun'. It no longer gives me that thrill and fun it did when I was younger. I love games like Fear where I'm actually surprised how the AI came at me, how unpredictable it was, and how it actually felt like you were up against something.

I love this post. Believe me, these shallow mechanics aren't going to last long. IMO, very soon a lot of time and money and hardware is going to go into mechanics. We will find what gives us the most excitement is for all these stories, these graphics and this great gameplay is for them to be nested in an actual breathing world, not just a bunch of mechanics that give a half-assed illusion of one. First it will be a niche market, then it will become the default AAA thing, IMO.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
I bought a Wii at launch for this game. I ended up ignoring it in favor of Trauma Center.

Chrono Cross
This was not the sequel to Chrono Trigger I was waiting years for.

Destiny
It had the makings of an epic tale set in the future with an experience only Bungie can provide. Turns out that was one of the biggest crocks of shit I've ever witnessed.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
Got this game for my birthday from a friend. I loved the hell out of Valkyrie Profile. The same feeling was definitely not there for the sequel.

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
A direct prequel to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, my favorite arcade style flight game of all time? How could this go wrong?!

Armored Core V
After Armored Core For Answer I was expecting an even more refined game in one of my favorite mecha games of all time. NOPE!

Metroid: Other M, and nothing else comes close.

You know, I've had plenty of let-downs during my time gaming. Off the top of my head, seeing the Super Mario Bros. movie as a child, playing Perfect Dark Zero, and seeing Capcom -- now Konami, too -- deteriorating are among them.

But you're right. Nothing comes close to Other M. Until 2010, Metroid truly was a sacred cow. Each game in the core series wasn't just "good" or "great" -- each game was sublime. Even Nintendo's two spin-offs were quality (say what you will about Hunters, but playing an online first-person shooter on a handheld in 2006 felt like the god-damned future). In my eyes, it was not only my favorite series, but it was untarnished.

I won't get into what made Other M such a blemish, as we've all been there before, but I will say that -- to this day -- I'm still in shock at exactly how abhorrent a blemish it is. Much of it is to do with the messiness of the original creator returning to his creation only to present his audience with something so shockingly awful that it shakes the whole canon to its core (we all know the very apt analogy to make here, as it mirrors the handling of a certain other media property). It somehow gives the stench a greater feeling of authenticity, as we've seen the current, creator-endorsed interpretation creep into other games as the "official" representation of Metroid.

So, yes, "nothing comes close." I can't think of another gaming-related disappointment that has had a more significant effect on me, anyway.

In the words of Ordell Robbie, "What the fuck happened to you, Metroid? Your ass used to be beautiful."

Xenosaga series is probably the most painful for me. It was supposed to be a retelling of the major periods in the Xenogears timeline. The 5th game I was especially excited for since that's when XG took place, and XG was cut short. But it was cut down to 3 game series, across one period. I guess it's just too ambitious for it's own good.

Final Fantasy X
Fable
Spore
Chrono Break cancellation
The Last Guardian
Original Metal Gear Rising. I know people love Revengeance, and Konami couldn't make the original game. But I really really wanted the first version.
Notch hinting at funding Psychonauts 2 then backing down after finding out the cost
Still no Bully 2

Silent Hills cancelled.
Red Dead Redemption never comming to PC. (Now I have an Xbox 360 and got the game, but I still would buy it on PC. Aiming is really annoying on a console).
Half-life 3 will never beat the expectations - if it gets released.
Probably have more, but I can't remember.

Sumo Digital dropping the ball with LBP3 and Sega releasing this trashheap of a sequel:

^ For someone who was generally pretty positive/optimistic about the series (never played 06, thankfully) up to this point, this game to me started the cracks that put an end to that. I generally found some (if not a lot of) enjoyment out of (almost) every Sonic game I owned until this soulless cash-in reared its head. The fact that I defended this game against the negative people up to when I actually sat down and played it (Episode I anyway) makes it even more disappointing. I did enjoy Colors and Generations, but looking back on this game really does disgust me on how much better it could had been.

I agree with every word. What makes it more painful is that it's an error as yet unfixed. Until we get a new Metroid we can't move on and write it off. Or we might not get one, in which case Other M's diabolical legacy only gets worse.

Xenosaga, I would think. It took me a long while to get over it, actually, and the fact that Xenoblade X might be a new, new retelling of Takahashi's ... kind of opens up that wound, actually, since I have a hard time believing they'll ever have what they need to start and finish a story.

Killzone 2

I am a HUGE fan of the first game, probably my second or third favourite game on the PS2. They took everything that is Killzone 1 and ruined it

- Horrible cast of characters (even Rico turned from a tough as nails marine into some wannabe rapper)
- horrible story
- worst weapons system known to man (1 weapon wtf, no secondary fires, 2 melee buttons rofl)
- movement and camera are abysmal
- extremely basic melee system (no epic finishers)
- no character select (which is kind of a good thing considering all the characters are terrible)
The only and ONLY redeeming factor is the ok multiplayer.

Seriously, I got it on day 1 thinking this would be the game that would surpass Halo 3, I was disgusted, I returned it the same day. After about 3 months I told myself that there is NO WAY that it could have been that bad and re-bought it again, sold it 2 days later. A year later I re-bought it yet again and sold it about a week later. Never have I given any single game so many chances. I played the one on PS4, it is an improvement over the 2nd one but not even close to the epicness that is the first one.

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
A direct prequel to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, my favorite arcade style flight game of all time? How could this go wrong?!
What is this ?! You can't be serious ! It is THE best Ace Combat EVER ! Yeah, it didn't go wrong, it turned into the best arcade flight sim of all times. Get a grip on reality...I am seriously going to have a heart attack here...

Before recent it was Yakuza 5 not getting localized, but now that shifts to Zero I guess.

In terms of gameseries I love FFXIII, GTAIV and Splinter Cell Conviction. All still fine games but I did not enjoy them at all (to the point of never even bothering to actually finish them).

Max Payne 3

Every article said how it was like MP1 and 2 with better Story and gameplay.

Played it and god damn those monologues were written by a 5 year old.

Also mentionable : Brutal Legend

God I hated Max Payne 3. After Red Dead I worshipped Rockstar and it felt like a gut punch

Majora's Mask for me. I love Zelda games but for some reason I couldn't get into it at all. Found the first dungeons really uninspiring and quit. After all the GAF hype and my love of the series in general I was really gutted

Hitman Absolution hit me hard.

I should have expected it, but I didn't. Even after all of the promotional material indicated what kind of game it was going to be I still believed and defended it. Willfully ignored the first reviews too.

I just wanted a new Hitman game so damn much.

It's such a weird case. There's glimpses of old school hitman gameplay and some good ideas, but so much of it is fundamentally flawed that I'm not sure how they didn't realise it during development.

This is true, too. A Metroid that's a return to form would definitely help us all move on (and, please, keep Sakamoto far away, busy working on crazy-assed shit like Game & Wario or Tomodachi Life -- he's good at that). I'm not one to beg for sequels, but handing the series back to Retro would be a wonderful new start (and, to me, a great symbol). Here's hoping.

In terms of games that I know that I will never, ever get to play, I'd have to say that Alpha Protocol 2 is at the top of that list. Obsidian is one of my favorite developers that I always forget is one of my favorite developers. Their games are so immersive, so easy to have a successful remediated experience within, that they are one of maybe only a small handful of developers that make playing games like reading a book for me in the sense that I will totally get lost within it and not even notice the outside world.

Alpha Protocol is the pinnacle of gaming experiences for me where I was totally sucked into that world each time I sat down to the point that I forgot where I was. I cannot say enough about how much I loved the experience. Even activating Iron Will didn't cause the illusion to be broken.

In terms of games that I was excited for, but that disappointed me when I got to play them, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is probably up there. I was such a fan of NiGHTS and Christmas NiGHTS, and I still do play the latter every year at Christmas (and on the original Saturn, no less). Those games were magical, still possessing some of the best aesthetics in any game that I've ever played. JoD felt like a copy, a new experience that traded on the old one without possessing any of the magic.

In other words, SEGA still holds a lot of sway over my gaming, and I'm not really a guy who plays their PC stuff, either.

Final Fantasy XIII (The OG FF was the first game that I saved for & bought with my own money). Had to let go

Resident Evil 6. I know there is demand for a zombie-hugging gun-fu beatemup, I'm not knocking that concept, but why did it have to be RE6?

EDIT: & Other M, duh, has there ever been such a massive shitting-up of canon for a long-beloved character?

Cutthroats: Terror on the High Seas (Terror on my PC, probably)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscure (Great setting, interesting story, awful gameplay)
Master of Orion 3 (An awful mess, unworthy successor)
Neverwinter Nights 2 (Great game, meh ending, Expansion redeemed)
Empire: Total War (all of it, full of it)
WoW Cataclysm.
Mass Effect 3.

Well the silent hills fiasco that just happened is up there, another one is waiting during every sony press conference for tlg to be re announced to no avail, and then a weird one, Mass Effect 2, its a fine game but I guess my expectations from the first one (my favorite game of all time) were too high.

Oh also, more recently.

Super Smash Bros for WiiU.
Mostly because the one big feature I was very much looking forward to was online play and it's an unplayable mess. I know it works fine for some people on GAF but for me and most people I know it just doesn't.
And the rest of the game is "meh". Single player content is boring and I personally didn't like many of the new stages. Local multiplayer is allways fun but honestly, I have just as much fun with melee. It's not like Mario Kart 8 which has made it hard to go back to older Mario Kart games

Here's my list of games I was disappointed in whether they just weren't good or overrated in my opinion:

- LoZ: Wind Waker
- Bayonetta 2
- Tomb Raider
- Bioshock series (Infinite almost escaped but was repetitive)
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Halo 3 and Halo 4 (Reach was great though)
- Bulletstorm
- Gears of War 2 and 3
- Watch Dogs
- Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
Etc.
