PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

PSX-scene has an entire board dedicated to 480p and widescreen hacks. My impression is that they have variable results. I imagine the 480p one works better than the widescreen one but yeah, it seems like a pretty simple edit that can be done to the ISO on some level. Not terribly involved.

I'm assuming it's done either through patched backups and/or FMB apps?

Played Blood Will Tell for the first time today after finishing reading Dororo. The good thing is that the dialogue is almost ripped straight from the manga. The bad thing is english VA and lack of facial animation making it a bit weird. Story seems a bit out of order and will have lots of stuff not in the manga, so that'll be interesting to see. Combat is fun, pretty loose but with lots of options. Supposedly has 60 boss fights and 30 hours long which is pretty damn huge. It's like onimusha on crack.

the former I believe. the latter may be possible but I'd be willing to be it's not as reliable.

I hope it's not too convoluted. I went as far as getting FMB running on a PS 2 last year only to be sorely disappointed in apps like xploader and GSM that only do some weird and ugly voodoo that does nothing to actually make a game render in 480p.

My other hurdle is that I'd like my PS3 to do this... And the hacking scene there seems even more esoteric.

I think there's a decent chance that both the ps2 and ps3 hacking scenes will pick up a bit of steam in the near future. Especially for projects like this. No guarantees of course, but there does seem to be a waiting period for these things for whatever reason.

Damn, I started a new playthrough of Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria and it took over half an hour of fighting of mobs just hit lvl 2, and that's getting all the bonus crystals for extra xp.

I forgot how big of a grind this game is. :/

Yakuza 2 get

I really need to replay Yakuza 2. I loved it, but had to blow through the whole game in a weekend due to my schedule at the time. Definitely a game where it's better to take your time.

I'm thinking about picking up a Japanese PS2 for the exclusives and to get around the 50HZ issue for games I don't mind playing in that language. Being able to play PS1 games from the region would be a sweet bonus too which has literally only occurred to me as I type this!

My question is - I'll be after a slim, can I use my UK kettle lead straight into the power pack of the JP unit?

senpai noticed me. ;_;

i didn't have the guts to tell him that mundus could go suck a dick and that Nelo 3 with no items was like pulling my fingernails out.

glad to beat one of my PS2 demons

I'm kinda curious about the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games. I've always heard good things, but never actually played them. So, two questions. First, are the games still worth playing? Second, is the PS2 version the best, or should I go with the Xbox release?

They're fun with a friend. Gorgeous too, I remember hearing they were rendered at 1024x786 or something then downsampled to 480i or whatever which is why they aren't jaggy like other PS2 games.

I played BGDA on Gamecube, but AFAIK, the PS2 ver is fine.

Alright, I think Beatmania IIDX 16 practically has to be the most expensive game on the system at this point:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+IIDX+16.TRS1&_nkw=Beatmania+IIDX+16&_sacat=0

Cheapest used copy is $200, only new copy is $900.

Even Ibara never reached those levels, and it was stupid expensive.

Wow. So glad I caved and got it for $84 when Play-Asia had it.

And no, I wouldn't part with it. Empress Best is wonderful. I think it being the true FINAL console IIDX is driving up the value.

Ooh, the other styles are dirt cheap!

DJ Troopers is up there in price, but yeah, Empress is on another level entirely. I still remember being kinda annoyed by the higher-than-usual price tag at the time, but obviously, it ended up being worth it. Played the game a bit again last night, and... yeah, it's still awesome. Bahram Attack is my favorite song.

I played the first one. Not a bad game, but bland and not a lot of variety.

Champions of Norrath was more to my taste. Same developers, bigger scope, and 4 players instead of 2.

PS2 Baldur's Gate games look and play well - I wouldn't be worried about which platform. Champions games also great - play either.

I've been playing a lot of PS2 this last week, and as usual, whenever I go back to Gen 6, I'm baffled as to how games were so polished. The good action games basically all run at 60fps, and I like how when the games slowdown, it's actual slowdown in the game -- not just a frame rate drop. Feels like shit just got real.

Anyway, question: Is there any real difference in the quality of various component cables? I'm wondering if there's an advantage to going from the Psyclone cable I have now to the official Sony one, or a Monster cable.

They are some of my favorite games on the system. As for best platform, I don't think there is a meaningful difference in platforms.

Dark Alliance 2 is definitely more expensive than the original, and while it has some nice improvements and larger scope, I'd recommend the first entry to see if you like the series. The original is an inexpensive game and a pretty quick run through. If you end up liking these check out Champions of Norrath and its sequel, Champions: Return to Arms.

I'll also echo what sixteen-bit said, these games are a blast with friends. Great couch coop experiences.

Yes long live the king, but for real, how fucking disappointing was Wipeout Fusion. What the hell went wrong? I remember being so fucking hyped for it when the first few screens were released showing looping tracks, but then the gameplay ended up being total shIt. What a disappointment.

I bought these "premium" cables from Amazon many years ago. I hooked my PS2 back up a few months ago and noticed a sort of ghosting around contrasting text (kind of like compression artifacts). I didn't want to pay $30+ for official Sony cables, so I picked up the PS3 version of Monster cables for $15 off eBay, and I can't see any difference in image quality. I still get the same faint ghosting artifacts. I mean, it looks good, just not the HDMI-quality pixel perfect that I've grown used to. I'm not sure if that's just inherent with a component signal or I just keep getting low quality cables.

I get that ghosting you are talking about on mine as well and I have the original official sony PS2 component cables. The thing is, when I fiddle with the connections on the back of the screen, they seem to disappear and have the image look as clean as we are used too. I have no clue as to why the image isn't always displayed clean on mine unless I move around one of the input connectors on the TV. Doesn't take away from the game unless I really look though, so not a big deal I guess.

Quality wise? Eh it's questionable

Price wise? Absolutely, that crap was ridiculously marked up. I used to make more money off of commission selling a 15ft monster component cable than a $1500 tv back in the early 2000s.
At least those are analog cables that could maybe yeild some improvement with a high quality cable. I was working in commission sales when digital cables started coming in, and the Monster sales pitch never changed. It went from exadurating the truth to straight up selling snake oil.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'd never ever buy a monster cable because of that shit.

If you got a cheap used Monster cable. Great. They are okay cables. Their prices are nonsense. It's my archetypal marked-up ripoff company.

also, i use gamestop multi-console shit tier component cables for my PS3 and I would be hard pressed to find a big difference from official. my ps2 is on superior nihonjin d-terminal.

Well like Boco said, they're actually pretty good if your running analog sets. So if you can get one from a friend or wherever for $5 than it's worth trying out if you prefer retro gaming on old tvs.

The only time I ever noticed an actual difference in running analog monster cables was when they were used on large, old school rear projection sets. I never noticed any difference when they were being used on a CRT set like a Vaio or Trinitron.

Regardless of the set, you could see variance between better or worse component cables, since its inherently an analog signal.

But I tend to think it's more like "just don't get chicken wire" rather than "spend as much money as you can to get better and better quality".

Guys talk me out of buying Rule of Rose. I heard that due to the violence against children featured in this game it might never get a digital rerelease.

I'm about to pull the trigger at ~300$

Help....

The game is awful. It's not worth it. I seldom endorse watching a game rather than playing it, but RoR is the exception. Great story, everything else is dire.

Way of the Samurai series thoughts? Kinda caught my eye from the premise, and the fact that the composer is the same guy who did the really unique Tenchu soundtracks.

Also I think i've asked this before, but any recent impressions on that X-Files survival horror game?

I've only played the first Way of the Samurai, but I really, really liked it. The combat system's a lot of fun, and the way branching storylines are handled is really unique. The game's only about 2 hours long, but the point is to replay it over and over to get more endings and explore all the weird nuances the game has on offer.

Definitely one of the more interesting games on the system. I'd highly recommend it.

I'm going through a horror game kick and Xfiles is one of the games I ordered. From what I've heard its an RE clone (not a bad thing)
