Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Nothing other than the usual comments about how little content is actually available at launch and the really empty release calendar for the next few months. There's also the other possibility where this is all intentional and they really are pushing games as a service with Splatoon, and the staggered releases are just a way of keeping interest up as they build additional content.

Until we get more information or a postmortem all we can do is speculate but it really doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the game either way. If it really is just a result of a rushed release I don't think that's a problem at all.

Seconded on the not finding a problem with it. It's a clever bit of problem solving if they did actually have to skirt around a lack of content. It seems like it was built from the ground up to have a real sense of community/game show vibe. Someone a few pages back also pointed out how the curation of maps makes it more likely the community tries new things. Since in most MP situations there is a fan favorite map almost immediately after launch.

About to pick this up, any tips for just starting? And is it a good idea to get through the single player campaign first?

It might help get you used to things but I just jumped into online. I would say stick with the motion controls, adjust sensitivity. I was reluctant at first with them but after really getting used to it the motion controls are great.

Some might not agree with me but I would say ignore going after people especially in Turf Wars and just keep painting. But most of all just have fun! That is what this game is best at.

Nope. You can't reroll the primary ability, and for some abilities there are precious few pieces of gear that have them, especially the exclusives like ninja squid.
True, but I haven't had any gear with a completely worthless main ability yet, so... whatever.
You can add slots. So if you really have clothes you think look great, you can spend the money with Spike and get the look you want and also have more slots for abilities on them.
Yeah. Spend a lot of money until you get the desired sub abilities.

I recommend reading the recent NintendoLife interview with the Splatoon producer Hisashi Nogami:

Right now I'm using this:
tumblr_nphbv1AKwq1ux7li8o1_1280.jpg

Alternating between the Dynamo Roller, .52 Gal, and Splattershot Pro. Splattershot Pro benefits the least from the shoes, so I change it to something else when using that. Defense Up is to stop another .52 Gal from two-shotting me and stops chargers from partially charging and OHKOing me. Damage Up allows me to two-shot with the .52 Gal against people who don't use Def Up.

Also, managed to get a shot where my inkling is blinking lol.

Anyone doing a GAF lobby right now? I just got back to A- and feel great. The B+ and higher Splat Zones is a lot of fun.

Coincidentally, the gear with the primary skills I use made my character look like an Inkling of myself. I wear glasses and typically like to wear red hoodies.

Man, four ink refillers? Does your tank refill like instantly when you submerge?

I really think a lot of the abilities are worthless and can easily be negated by numerous others. The increased defense against attack ability is an example. again a rapid fire rate, it doesn't matter.

In my mind, you need to be in the game so increased speed to respawn, swim, etc are crucial. All things being equal, if your opponents are taking longer to get back in the game than you are, you gain more ground, regardless of the mode.

I don't know that more ink/ slowing down depletion helps especially if your weapon already has a fast rate of fire. It should rest on your skill to get out of one on ones and sneaking up on your opponent.

I played with abilities for a little bit but found them unnecessary for me to win games, which i have been doing consistently.

Abilities are useful based on your playstyle and weapons used.

You say the respawn time is important but if you dont die much or at all then that perk is useless.

As a sniper it might be useless.

So it all depends on the person playing. I see all the perk being useful.

How do you manage with the pro? I use 2 ink savers sometimes and it still eats a ton of ink

If you play with someone you've added as a friend, will you see them in Miiverse afterwards?

If so, anyone with a Shrimp-Pink Polo want to play with me in a little while? Really want to order that shirt.

Play Single Player (at least) until you master the controls. You can unlock some things for multiplayer in single player as well.

Practice on the multiplayer maps by selecting "Recon" in the lobby (without selecting a game mode).

Enjoy!

And Damage Up can stack, but there are caps so that nearly every weapon cannot kill earlier.

That's the equivalent of 2 Ink Recovery Up as main abilities. It helps recover ink fast, especially since I'm gonna be using Splat Bombs a lot.

You just have to refill ink a lot. So refilling ink faster is a must.

Does the primary ability on clothes add more than a sub ability?
do they stack?

Yes and yes. They stack, but less and less with each additional slot of same ability that you add to your loadout.

So unless there's a particular advantage you covet, you'll get the most out of diversifying your abilities.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on with my friend? He can't connect to any splatoon matches, just gets connection errors. He can play Mario kart 8 online and every other game on the Wii U just fine. He tried turning off his fire wall on his router but that did nothing. He got a brand new router and that STILL did nothing.

Ah I need to see if I have that perk

Do we know at what point it's basically not worth it anymore?

Yeah, people should feel free! I would love to see it completed.

It'll be easier for me to check what I have and don't have by changing TV source than clicking menus in game. :D

Why the "Added Ability" lines though? For ones you have upgraded?

I'll keep what you have on there and just add my own so I know of some clothes I don't have. Give myself a headstart lol.

Yeah, it lets me preserve the fact that the gear only started with one or two slots and I added more with Spyke. So when I share it with people they don't get the wrong impression that it was 3 star gear to begin with.

I made some dumb decisions but that was just because I could, with what I had, in those few hours I had access to the Spyke glitch.

Have him call Nintendo support. They'll guide him through the process of finagling with his router settings. Can usually find something that works.

At A- I'm getting like >90% Japanese players which is just fucking exhausting at this point, so many delayed bullshit deaths that it feels like I'm barely participating really

Is this not selling well in Europe and I have to wait for Murican afternoon time to get some reasonable games in? Or are baka gaijins just too bad and stuck at C?

Finally sat down and started the single player. Wow. Cleared the first two areas (worlds?)

I think I may like this even more than the multiplayer. Regardless, perfect compliment to it. I still don't entirely understand how you're supposed to collect scrolls (I've gotten 1 from each boss and 1 accidentally from a normal level)
Scrolls are hidden is the levels. You might need to take a second or third go through the level taking it more slowly to make sure you don't miss a hidden area. I certainly did.

Yes if you get a total knockout win and the match goes on for less than 3 minutes it is more efficient than turf war giving 1800 (at C- if you're A+ it is more like 4500 I hear) assuming an average of 900 for the turf wars. But the problem is my win rate is more like 33% (leaving me stuck in place in C-) and matches go on for longer than 3 minutes but not quite make it into overtime so I end up getting way less. Except frustration and anger, I get bags of that.
You know I might have to eat these words a bit. I played ranked and had some fun. My win rate was about 50%, one-sided matches ended in less than 3 minutes (making it more efficient than my turf war calculations) and the struggles were pretty refreshing (plus nearly all of them went into overtime, 336 points for 5 minutes whoo hoo).

Distraction is a really good tactic in this game, especially in this mode (that was one game where both sides distracted themselves from going for the zone for over a minute). One match which I won, our timer was very low, an opponent had the Kraken special. You would think on they should ink up the zone to attempt make us lose control (that is their only win condition at this point) but nope they were like "two opponents over there, must kill".

Plus this was on the mall and I was standing on the grated part. They jumped, splatted me but I got to watch the kill cam of the Kraken slowly divebombing in its corkscrew spin right into the water (remember Kids, Squids and Kraken fall right through grates). Made my day that.

I want a set with 12 damage ups

And a set with 12 defense ups

And a set for rollers with 12 run speed ups
Apparently run speed up only works when you are not firing (i.e. not rolling). Sorry dynamo roller, you're really just a .52 gal shotgun that can also roll at a snails pace.

I have to say that although this game has many points that could be (and have been) criticised for there lies one hugely redeeming quality.

Even I have consolation complained about the lack of voice chat, and the over use of the roller for 'noobs'.

However this game is something that my wife is quite addicted to. Mind you, she doesn't really like games. She enjoys Mario kart, mobile games (especially word/puzzle games) and occasionally would complete some puzzles in Prof. Layton. I can hardly convince her to play anything I'm interested in.

She does not play shooters (don't think she has even played one before. She hates playing online. Weirdly though, she loves Splatoon.

She can't really aim properly, but using the roller is able to really contribute to the team. No voice chat means she feels comfortable enough to play online without people adding/talking to her.

Splatoon really is the Mario kart of online shooters.

... Now only if it had online co-op, as she keeps hogging the TV lol.

Do you have to be 20 to add more slots to your gear?

Right after the update of the other day I started experiencing severe lag and recurrent disconnections. My connection is really bad, I know (I pay for a 7Mbps but speed test tells me I reach 4.20 max), but I was playing kinda fine before di update. Is anybody else having this kind of trouble? Any suggestions?
I'm going crazy, and Splatoon is my only online game with this kind of issues, both on WiiU and PC.
Thanks everybody

I want a 4×4×1 Mode where one plays as 'hero' character with unique pre-set Skills, just like in MGO when one played as Snake or Raiden.

In this case you could have an Octarian as Character, the Hosts from the Show and maybe even Mario with the FLUDD. This would be great fun.

with Ink Saver (main) I get roughly 11 charged shots out of my tank with the Squiffer, without it it's 9

I was wondering if Tenacity would be worth getting but I have no idea how fast the charge rate is

and my connection still sucks

Played the game about 20+ hours now.

My main issue with this game is some of it's ridiculous specials. I'm sorry, but making players invincible for any amount of time has no place in competitive matchmaking (bubble, Kraken). Also, the lag + Japanese players are ruining this great game.

I really hope the modes don't become randomized once they add more. Its one thing to have the maps randomized on rotation, but if you have the modes randomized as well thats just too much. Imagine wanting to play splat zones after coming home from work only to realize you can't because splat zones isn't available for the next 4 hours and you'll have to go to bed by then. That would be infuriating.
